just printed our cruise docs for Mariner OTS in May.  There are luggage tags as well.

Can we take our wheeled luggage on board ourselves or is all luggage by porter?

Also,  day 2 is at Coco Cay.  We didnt book anything shore-wise  there,  ok to just wing it?

Welcome to the message boards!

To board the ship you and everything you carry on board has to go through security.  This is very similar to TSA airport screening.  Large suitcases are not suitable to go through security.  If all you have are the smaller carry on wheeled bags that would go on airplane as carry on, those can go through security with you to the ship.

The waiting areas and gangways aren't designed for a lot of luggage.  Gangways to board are often uphill so dragging luggage is an effort.  Cabins don't typically open until1pm so if you board early you have to drag all your carry on items around with you.  Giving luggage to porters is simply easier.

CocoCay is a beach or pool day.  Loungers are included, bring towels off the ship.  No need to buy an excursion unless you want to.  Jetskis for example are not included and cost extra.

Welcome to the forums @stevep! To add on to what @twangster posted, you may want to consider having an over-shoulder bag or small backpack to put what you really need on hand while wandering the ship after board, and let even your carry-on bag be checked by the porters along with your larger luggage. This is especially helpful if you plan to have lunch in the windjammer or want to use the pool before the rooms become available; it's much easier to put a small thing like a bag or backpack under your seat or deck lounger, so the area around you stays clear for passengers and crew walking by.

Easy and lightweight way to keep all your must-haves like medications you don't want to lose, passports, SetSail passes, bathing suits and sunscreen (so you can use the pool while waiting on rooms to become available), small camera, paperback book, etc. easily on hand.

Like the idea of giving my carry on to the porters! Just a back pack for my valuables, meds, etc.

Totally agree with the "think airport" comment above.  To add on to what has been said already - For us, we like to eat in the dining room the 1st night so we bring a carry-on sized bag with a change of clothes in the event our bags are delivered after 6pm (has happened) but we go as light as possible.  If we are getting on the ship early we'll arrive in shorts with swimsuits under and carry a single carry-on with us. The rest of the bags go with the porter.  Then when the cabins open about 1p, we put the carry on in the cabin.  Our last cruise we had an overnight flight to Miami and we literally put on swimsuits and changed clothes in the airport bathroom before heading to the cruise terminal so that we would have to carry on as little as possible with us.

For the tags, put them on your bags after your flight but before you get to the cruise terminal.  You can buy some plastic covers so they don't rip off (again has happened to me).

The plastic covers is the way to go.  Let the porters have all the bags.  The less you have to carry around is the only way to go.  Watching people walk around with their hands full can actually be quite entertaining. It is NOT worth the hassle.  WELCOME to the message boards and enjoy your cruise.
