Bermuda will widen North Channel to accommodate Royal Caribbean's Quantum class ships

In:
21 Oct 2015

Bermuda's Ministry of Public Works indicated it will begin dredging the North Channel by the end of the month that will remove approximately 0.1 million cubic metres of rock and/or reef.

The Royal Gazette reports the widening of the channel and dredging is so that the island can handle the scheduled visits by Royal Caribbean's Quantum class ships.

Royal Caribbean's Quantum class ships are wider, deeper and longer than the older vessels and they require deeper and wider approach channels with smoother turns.

The work to dredge the channel will be a "24 hour, seven day a week operation and will take approximately one month to complete", according to the Cabinet Office.

The dredging is being done in Late October to avoid main coral and fish spawning season.  In addition, 598 corals have been relocated to adjacent reefs and are being monitored.

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas features retractable roof that allows guests to enjoy the pool year round

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas features two glass enclosures for either side of the ship's upper-deck pool, patio and bar area that was made by OpenAire and it has become a popular spot on the ship.

The retractable roof retracts into a central core and wall panels that slide down to railing height that allows the space to go from indoor to outdoor easily and quickly.

When it's cold outside or the weather does not cooperate, both of these 3,706-square-foot structures close automatically and silently, letting guests continue enjoying all of the ship’s amenities. The design has brought extremely positive reviews for both Anthem of the Seas and OpenAire.

Anthem of the Seas is the second collaboration between Royal Caribbean and OpenAire.  OpenAire created a similar retractable roof for sister ship Quantum of the Seas.  The work done on Quantum of the Seas made the work on Anthem of the Seas much easier.

The retractable roof will also create significant future operational savings for Royal Caribbean, as the thermally-broken aluminum framing is maintenance-free and resistant to corrosion caused by an outside atmosphere of salt air and the moist chemical aquatic inside environment. By allowing the ocean’s sunshine and breezes into the pool area, it also reduces HVAC energy use by 27% compared to a traditional enclosure.

OpenAire will complete work on a retractable enclosure for Royal Caribbean’s upcoming Ovation of the Seas ship this fall.

Royal Caribbean extends partnership with Mood Media to provide on-board overhead music

03 Jun 2015

Royal Caribbean extended its deal with Mood Media Corporation to be the sole provider for all the on-board, overhead music for Royal Caribbean's new Quantum class cruise ships.

Mood has provided the sound for Royal Caribbean ships in 220 distinct zones of music across 12 ships since 2007. In creating Royal Caribbean’s on-board sound, music designers carefully capture the global, exploratory nature of the company and its guests by blending traditional classics and contemporary favorites with hand-picked Italian, Spanish, French, English and Asian selections.

Additionally, Mood now provides music to the smart ship via 14 players covering 28 zones (gym, spa, smaller themed restaurants and larger dining halls, café, casino, pool deck, discotheque and more). One featured program is the highly customized RCC playlist, “Royal Caribbean Core.” The music straddles the line between familiar mainstream pop and hip indie pop to convey exhilaration and adventure. The tracks feature “seize-the-day” lyrics and a feeling of momentum from artists like Fitz and the Tantrums, U2 and Coldplay.

Royal Caribbean Vice President of Entertainment, Nick Weir, commented on the new deal, "After years of experience working with Mood Media as a music provider to our fleet, we knew we were placing our ship in good hands. The team was a key contributor in achieving the big picture experience we envisioned for our 21st century patrons"

“Royal Caribbean ascended above its competitors within the tourism industry because they value the importance of creating a holistic cruise experience that truly touches all sensory touch points for their loyal guests. They certainly took that mindset to another level with the new Quantum Class, and it’s a very exciting time for them,” said Ken Eissing, President of Mood Media – North America.

Royal Caribbean orders fourth Quantum-class cruise ship

07 May 2015

Royal Caribbean announced today it has ordered a fourth Quantum-class cruise ship that will be ready for delivery in 2019.

Royal Caribbean entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany to build the fourth Quantum-class cruise ship.

The fourth ship in the Quantum-class does not have a name yet but will be the sister ship to Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

“Today’s announcement is a reflection of the success of the first two Quantum-class ships,” said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “We have received a       remarkable response from travel agent partners and travelers, and are thrilled that we’ll be able to deliver another revolutionary ship with our partners at Meyer Werft.”

“The fourth Quantum class vessel will be a trailblazer in smart-ship design and vacation innovation,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “Royal Caribbean International is synonymous with adventure, and the icons and amenities on this ship will continue to challenge and expand guests’ expectations of the cruise experience.”

The order is contingent upon the completion of customary conditions, including financing.

Royal Caribbean UK wants Quantum-class ship to always call UK home

Speaking to TTG, Royal Caribbean vice president Dominic Paul, indicated his office wants to keep a Quantum-class cruise ship based out of the UK for the foreseeable future.

The addition of Anthem of the Seas to the UK market was a big move for Royal Caribbean.

“For us to place a brand new $1 billion ship in the UK is massive. By bringing it to the UK, we’re saying that we recognise this is a strategic market for us. The goal is to have a Quantum-class ship staying in the UK – we’re not just doing this for one season. We want Anthem to be seen as an iconic UK ship, assuming that it is successful.,” he told TTG.

“I would think it would have a long successful future here [in Southampton],” he added.

Paul wasn't worried about concerns over too much capacity in the market due to the larger ship, “When Independence came to the UK people said it was a really big ship to fill, but it’s got a really strong following now. People have sailed on it time and again – it’s been highly successful.”

RoboScreens on Royal Caribbean cruise ships to add visual intrigue

In:
20 Jun 2014

Robotics Online has a great piece about the new RoboScreens coming to Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class cruise ships.

Six 100” video screens attached to six industrial robots that were developed by ABB RoboScreens are a big reason Royal Caribbean will be taking on-board entertainment on its newest class of cruise ships to the next level.

Onboard it's upcoming Quantum-class cruise ships, guests will find these amazing innovations in the Two70 signature venue.

A RoboScreen is a graphical screen mounted to the arm of an ABB articulated arm robot, which creates a unique viewer experience by bringing virtually unlimited, 6-axis movement to the video media. Available in various sizes, the Two70° RoboScreens feature six ABB IRB 6620 robots, each holding a 100” diagonal Daktronics LED screen.

On Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class ships, the RoboScreens are stored in the ceiling when not in use but during shows in Two70, the RoboScreens extend down on the gantry to a position above the stage, displaying unique video and imagery while performing choreographed movements, all custom produced for the specific performance.

The RoboScreens were developed by Andy Flessas and were first introduced in 2010 as part of the Bon Jovi Circle Tour. They have also been a part of concerts and shows for Kis-My-Ft2, a Japanese Pop band; the Las Vegas house show for deadmau5, world famous music producer and performer; and the Ultra-Music Festival in Miami.

On the Quantum-class, the RoboScreens will periodically assemble in various formations, such as six screens in a row to form one continuous, long screen; a three by two stack to form one big square screen; or a serpentine row, much like a ‘W’ and a ‘V’ strung together.

The project involves the close collaboration of a number or parties, both within ABB and externally. Being the first installation of an ABB robot on any ship, the ABB Marine Power Group in Helsinki, Finland and the ABB Robotics North American team in Auburn Hills, Michigan worked together for the first time. The ABB PC software team in Gothenburg, Sweden is also involved, working on the programming software and addressing the unique challenges of operating robots at sea.

The external partners include Royal Caribbean, andyRobot, Daktronics, Waagner Biro, the gantry provider, Coolux, the video server manufacturer, and Meyer Werft, the shipbuilder based in Papenburg, Germany.
