Hello all. I am totally new to cruising. I am on my first one ever on the Odyssey in under 10 days now. I booked a balcony room and am going on my own. I have literally signed up for every offer they send as not sure what i will need. I received a Royal UP invitation and so i bid the maximum on every room they offered but have had no luck. I really wanted the JS but hey ho. I keep reading on forums how successful people seem to be, am I just unlucky as I have never cruised do they go on how many points you have. just asking as my friend went on the MSC lines and was successful in all her picks so wondering if that cruise line might be luckier. just wanted some opinions as to who gets the upgrades, I am looking to book twice a year now as i am on my own and these seem to be what people do and love, or so all my friends say, haha

Because ships are cruising at/over capacity, the odds are lower now than in the past. Do you see any suites available when you do a mock booking for your sailing on the official Royal site? Good luck though, you never know

MSC in the US is different than MSC in Europe.

In the US MSC is struggling to fill ships so upgrades abound.  Unsure about MSC in Europe.

Royal is filling ships so upgrades are less likely.

Try doing a test booking. You'll be able to see if that category is even available. If not, chances are very very low that you will get a Royal Up for that category.

That's not necessarily true. I've gotten RUs a few times when none of the upgrade categories were available.

Royal Up is a gamble. Also, if you go looking for spots you will find them, in the sense you see lots of people successfully winning upgrades because that is what you are looking for. There can be a lot of factors for someone to win and I don't think you have to bet the max to do so. Bet what you are comfortable with and hope for the best. I also book the room I want as opposed to hoping for an upgrade.
