Fate of past ships

Anyone else who’s been cruising for a long time (and perhaps has too much time on their hands, lol) ever look up what happened to their old ships from long ago? I took my first cruise in 1991 at the age of ten, on the original Sky Princess. Sleeplessness and Wikipedia led to some interesting finds. I never knew that Sky Princess was one of the last steam turbine powered cruise ships ever built. I also never knew that my second cruise, on RCCL’s Song of Norway in 1992, was the first ship RCCL ever owned. I found out that the first five ships I was on have all since been scrapped, some as recently as this year. Most went on to have at least four or five name changes as they got sold and traded to other lines. And I experienced a little self reflection when I realized over half of them were “younger” than I am now when they met that fate 🤔.

Perhaps one of the most interesting realizations I came to was how small those original ships were by modern standards. I remember as a kid running all over the place and being in awe at the vastness of the atriums and public spaces. Yet most of them were in the 40,000 GT range…some closer to 30,000. Crazy to think more than five or six of those would equal the tonnage of a modern Oasis class ship.
