Room Services

Recommended Posts

Keep in mind that these questions are asked for first timers (like us in 3 days) who are unfamiliar with Cruising practices.

Ok, so it seems that room service is divided in two separate happenings. 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM for breakfast and 11:00 AM to 6:00 AM is for regular dining.

There is no service fee for the Continental portion of breakfast but a $7.95 delivery fee if an American breakfast is also desired.  The rest of the day there is a $7.95 delivery fee for everything (the menu I am looking at (blurry) looks like a $2.95 delivery fee but that doesn't make sense).

I assume the delivery fee include a tip for the deliverer ? But how about the deliverer of just a Continental breakfast, what would be an appropriate tip (18% ? of what ?)

And, talking about the cabin attendant(s). It seems to me that there are usually 2 attendants to a cabin, primary and their assistant. If I want to give additional gratuities at start of cruise ($10/$20 more or less?) what is an appropriate amount to give? To both or primary to split.

Hope to get some actual $$$ answers, not the stock "Give what you think it is worth"

I believe that the $7.95 charge does not include tip. If I'm wrong, I'll be corrected.

As far as tipping goes, last cruise we tipped like $5 bucks for each room service delivery and $10 a day for the main steward and $5 a day for the assistant.

That's us though. Some give more, some give less. It's all relative. That's my stock answer.

When it comes to room service ..... it's a 24 hour/day thing that you can do.  The $7.95 fee is per order (regardless of how much you order) .... the only thing complimentary is the continental breakfast items ....... as for tipping, we just give the guy $5 that delivers it ..... similar to if we had pizza delivered back home.....

As for the Room Steward ..... I never saw an assistant..... I always thought we only had one, at least we were only in contact with one each cruise..... they DO get a portion of the daily gratuities, but at the end of the cruise, we always leave a little extra...... usually $20 (We wish we could do more but that would mean I spend less in the casino... lol).  Now, we've never had a suite, so, I'm not sure if that would be a factor in my tipping habits.

If you prepay gratuities or are just billed the standard amount, there is a breakout that tells you how much goes to the waiter, the room attendant, etc. (I received a little business card at Guest Services to help me with calculations). You can give more at the end of the cruise using the provided "envelopes" and extras are available at customer service.  For example, we tip the room attendant an extra $20-$30 for the week, which would cover 2 or 3 guests.  It isn't a lot more ($1-2 per day for each person).  We base our tipping on the premise that 20% is right in today's economy and the default gratuity is 18%, so we 'owe" everyone another 2% if the service is good as expected. (ditto for the dining room).  We try to bond with the stateroom attendant as he/she can really make the cruise more enjoyable - like getting a mattress topper, unhooking the locked door between adjacent balconies, reminding us to lock our safe, etc.  Sometimes engaging the staff and treating them like real people is a good way of enjoying great service.

We don't use room service but the previous advice seems to be on track.
