Thanks all. It was less about needing food, and more about another element that made cruising (ice sculptures, crazy desserts) a special experience. Was hoping to share it with my kids so glad I didn't "talk it up" to them.

A lot of the old school cruising activities are no longer used by RC, like the Midnight buffet.

The one and only Ice Sculpture I've seen on a cruise was on my first cruise on Majesty Of The Seas back in 2001.

The cruise experience now  is a little different from then, but even without those activities you will enjoy sharing the experience with your kids.

Toss up - Amber Cove by Carnival in the DR or NCL's Harvest Caye in Belize.

In the case of Amber Cove in 2015 it's a new country that wasn't accessible by modern medium sized ships (Carnival doesn't have larger or mega ships).  However it's a private port, for Carnival Corp. branded ships.

In the case of Harvest Caye in 2017 it's almost a private destination like Cococay or Labadee but close enough to Belize to run excursion from.  A lot of unhappy cruises step off at Harvest Caye thinking they have access to Belize only to learn very little is included such as food, beverage or activities and you can't get there from here.  II's not promoted as a private destination like NCL's Great Stirrup Cay (right beside CocoCay), instead it's labeled as Belize on itineraries.  It almost serves as a pier to operate excursion to Belize but you can't access Belize without an excursion so it leaves a lot of unhappy cruisers feeling like they been dumped on an isolated money trap island.  Go back on the ship or spend money.  No self-exploring Belize.

Both are notably different than what is proposed here.  In this case a 3rd party is building the port so many different cruise lines can use it, like most islands.  For both Amber Cove and Harvest Caye you will likely only see the Carnival Corp. or NCL holdings branded ships using those private ports.

ITM group is the company how will build the new cruise port.
They are owners of Costa Maya at Mahahual, México and TownCenter at Roatan, Honduras so I suppose the new cruise port will be similar to the ports they already own.

  3. The App doesn't support Push notifications so if the only thing you are interested in is communications I wouldn't use it.

If both have an iPhone you could use iMessage just connecting to the WiFi network of Royal Caribbean without purchasing a Voom package and you will be able to send messages. (Note: you will not be able to navigate or use any other internet related stuff without the package, only iMessage)

Oh trust me, I'm doing more than writing. If we do end up going to Miami as planned, isn't RCL's head office there?

Right there, in the Port of Miami

Appreciate the info is this thread. We are on Brilliance so will visit GC and Cozumel.

For our day in Cozumel we have 10:00 AM arrival and 7:30 PM departure. Chichen Itza is at 10:30 AM for 6 hours (10:30 - 4:30) and is our first choice.

Based on your post and description in the cruise planner, travel is a 45-minute water taxi each way (90 mins) and based on your 2/3 description it sounds like an hour+ bus ride with 2 hours at the actual site?

Is there easy access to a beach near the ship so we can relax for a couple hours and maybe grab a light meal (not really looking for alcohol) before we get back on the ship for the 7:30 departure?

This would be the view from the Ship at Cozumel.

As far as I know there are no public beaches near the ship but these options might work for you:

Once you leave the port there are two hotels with a small beach facing the Ship. They have day passes and you are right next to the port so you don't need a taxi.

The first hotel from right to left (looking the picture) is EL CID https://www.resortforaday.com/El-Cid-La-Ceiba-Day-Pass-Excursions-p/czcoec.htm
The Day Pass is something around $65 and is All Inclusive.

The second hotel would be Grand Park Royal Cozumel, they also have Day Pass option. The hotel is in the other side of the street (not on the beach) but they have a beach club right in front http://parkroyal.mx/en/park-royal-grand/cozumel

I'm not sure of the cost but you can call them, it should be around $65 also.

In Juneau, we are flying out on a sea plane to go fly fishing. When we get back we are going to take the tram to the top of Mt. Robert's. I'm really looking forward to Juneau. It's Skagway that's bumming me out. Can't figure out what to do there. Not interested in sled-dog racing or GASP! the train. Since Carnival Cruise Line bought the Skagway line, I wouldn't know what to expect. Probably nothing, but. . . Maybe just walking around port and finding some good local food.

What is wrong with the train? It was my only option for Skagway ?

Tracy Arm is a sea day and I'm not familiar with any excursions to that glacier.

One lesson I learned in Alaska is there's a lot more excursion options beyond RC.  Heck, you can just take a taxi to Mendenhall Glacier Park and walk one of the many trails and get close to the glacier.

Hi Matt, would you recommend just taking a taxi to the park visitors center instead of booking a tour?

While clearly not the case in the original photo of this post, one challenge is that people will place towels on a lounger and then jump in a pool or hot tub.  On a hot day floating in the pool for a while is quite normal.

This isn't meant to defend the chair hogs of the world.  Clearly dropping towels at 7am or when pools aren't even open yet is not an example of someone who is actively using the pool deck while also consuming a lounger.

It's easy to just say "Royal should do X" but Royal isn't in the business of alienating guests and aggressively enforcing the rules will likely catch some innocent people in that net.  Royal publishes many rules for guests to follow on board and they hope guests will follow them.   This isn't the only example of guests ignoring the rules at the expense of those guests that do.   Unsupervised children who are misbehaving is another rule breaking item that irritates me.  Well behaved children are always welcome.

At the end of the day we all have to get along onboard and be aware of our impact to other guests in the actions we take.  Like in all things in life, some people are more considerate than others.  Just ask anyone who commutes the same drive everyday.

    I totally agree.

As for the misbehaving unsupervised children I just don't get it. I was on Harmony a week ago, on Grease show you are supposed to have a reservation, that means that the kids inside should be with their parents. There were like 5 kids in the front row throwing popcorn to each other... Ok, that is a normal behavior for a kid, but when they ran out of popcorn the started to throw their beverages each other spilling all over the chairs, other passengers and the floor.

At this point I was expecting a parent to show up and put some order. Nothing happened, not even a RC staff did anything, they kept screaming, running, and hassling each other and other passengers until they got bored (obviously) and got out. ?

This may be an indicator, albeit small.  I've been on the Radiance twice: Hawaii (repositioning from Australia/NZ) and then an Alaska cruise.  The one change I noticed was Rita's Catina was changed to Rita's Crab Shack.  I imagine small changes will take place.   Enjoy - you will love Alaska.

Last week, at the NextCruise office on Harmony I talked with someone who had a manager id and asked him what changes there would be on Ovation next year.

He told me that only some small changes will take places. Nothing about a Broadway show or anything else. It doesn't matter, it's a great ship and an awesome trip.

    Welcome to the message boards!

Boardwalk balconies will be noisier during the day.  At night after any aqua shows have ended the boardwalk will become quiet.  The Central Park balcony cabins do tend to be quieter simply because there is no venue like the aqua theater that also plays movies or football games at times during the day.  Central Park often has some live musicians in the early evening hours but after that it's just the cricket sounds they pipe in.

I noticed that when there is a group or music on the pools deck the Central Park balconies aren't so quiet because they're just in front and below this deck.

Well there seems to be many more chairs not taken then taken..so not really an issue I don't think.

Any of my cruises its been WAY worst than that.

Yes, there was chairs available because it was raining. Maybe the picture isn't as clear as I would like it but for example the magazines left were soaked, and there was no other towels on any other chairs because of the weather so it was pretty obvious who were the chair hogs, the only ones left. Probably they even forgot they left their towels there.

This is  one of the  things that made me reluctant to take another cruise.   I don't want to stress over getting a chair. I realize it happens at popular resorts too. There needs to be a system where if you are away from your seat for an  extended period of time, they can remove your belongings!  Someone needs to develop some type of check in technology for checking in!

Even Harmony is a ship with more than 6000 passengers I was able to find a lounger whenever I need it. You shouldn't be stressed for it. ?

I bet food isn't the only thing they were sniffing for in Mexico! ?

I'm not sure I get the joke...

When I was in Cozumel there were police dogs sniffing bags to make sure no food came off the ship.

This is normal, you're entering a Country. Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture prohibits the import of a number of items because they pose a huge risk for potentially introducing disease or plague into the country. For example, homemade foods, meats, hay/straw, and dirt are all prohibited from being imported into Mexico. Every country has the right to do this and they have very good reasons to do it. The same happens when you enter USA.

    Greetings

  13. A friend of mine  has just taken this tour. He arrived in Cozumel in Oasis of the seas. The problem that he mentioned is that the stay at Xcaret park was less than 4 hours because Oasis was leaving Cozumel at 5:30. I will arrive at Harmony at 8:00 AM (ship time) and leave at 7:00 PM (Ship time). Do you think with this time span it's worth the tour and that I could spend more time in the park than 4 hours as it happened to my friend?

    This is the tour:
