Changing credit cards onboard

You can go to guest services and have them change it anytime during the cruise. Just be aware that there will still be a pre-authorization on your original card that won’t be lifted for a while.

Okay thanks for the heads up. Do you know if this can also be done by a casino host as well?

I do not know and have never asked.  If your goal is to get cash or casino credit to use for games in the casino, I believe the casino will help you, but it could be seen as a cash advance by your credit card provider.  However, if you go to a slot machine and transfer money to it by charging to your room, it comes across as a normal purchase with Royal Caribbean and not a cash advance.  I am not sure the daily limit for charging to your room is, but it would be better than a cash advance if it fits your play style.  I avoid having the casino do anything directly with my credit card to make sure any transaction does not look like a cash advance.

Ironically, I do usually charge my room whenever I play the casino slots and I receive a 3% cashback from my credit card when I do.  I just make sure I don't take any more out that I have not already budgeted for ahead of time.

Reason I’m asking is because it would save me from bringing cash on hand onto the cruise and if I happen to hit my card limit, then I can always switch to a different card. The cash would be for the use of the casino so it would be much easier speaking with the casino host as opposed to going to guest services to change the credit card on file.

I think I’ve read here and on other platforms multiple times that the charge to the room will be seen as a regular entertainment or travel purchase on the credit card and won’t be seen as a cash advance. So technically, the 5k daily limit could earn one $50-$150/day on their credit card as cash back or points. Based on what I’ve read, it seems as though once you hit a threshold (I believe it’s either 300 or 500, quite certain it’s 300) on your onboard account, they will automatically charge your credit card to clear the account.

The one and only time we ever had a credit card issue, the casino was clueless.  Even after the problem was resolved with Guest Services, the casino still had us on the “naughty list”.  It took 2 Genies and the Ships Purser (I don’t think that’s the actual, correct title.  Chief Financial Officer, maybe) to finally get it straightened out.  I would NOT count on any help from the casino re: a CC issue.

To my knowledge, the daily limit per account (per stateroom) is $5,000.

This is precisely how we use our credit cards onboard.  However, we both have very high limits on our cards so have never yet had a “max” issue (thank goodness).  If you need to change cards for this, or any other reason, it will have to be done through Guest Services. The casino will be no help.

The only down side to this scenario is that you end up with a LOT of cash to take home.  Just be sure you do not bring back more than the allowable limit.

They typically charge your card nightly in a batch process.  Even when I switch at guest services, they tell me that any charges from that day will be processed that night on the new card.

Not sure who your card provider is, but mine allows me to "overpay" my balance and artificially raise my credit limit.  I usually do this before the cruise with my casino money so there are no surprises later.  And I get the 3% cash back too 😉   Once I learned I could do this with my credit card provider, I don't need to change cards any more for casino purposes.  And when I get home, if I still have credit from my overpayment, I can just transfer that back to my account as a cash advance with no interest because I had not eaten into my credit limit.

I do have a high enough credit limit that I no longer have to worry about this, but I do like being debt free and not having a rough morning because I charged up a lot of credit card debt playing in the casino last night.

Okay thanks for the clarification.

For sure, makes sense. In the worst case scenario (I think in this case it is best case since this will only happen when you win), then you can just declare it at customs, right?

Great minds think alike lol. I already prepaid two of my credit cards above the remaining balance in anticipation for this upcoming cruise. I was just worried about prepaying too much on one card in case the card provider gives me issues. I have had issues in the past from transferring those credit balances back to my chequing though. Seems like some sort of AML thing and they always ask to show proof of source of transfer into the credit card originally. That process usually takes 10 business days to clear everything and receive funds back.

My card limits are high enough as well, but because I have the credit split between two cards, I may need to swap between them.

One thing nobody mentioned is that when you charge to the casino, hopefully, you will win in cash. Usually what happens is I end up with enough cash to pay my balance, but I don't because I have a Sapphire Reserve card and earn more points on Royal purchases.

Haha yes of course. Let the smuggling begin! 😂 I’m jk of course for anyone else reading. Please declare it at customs lol

Do you see it as an entertainment purchase or travel purchase?

I have never tried to bring in more money than is allowed so I'm not sure how this would work.  The last person I want to chat with about having more cash than I should, is CBP.  I've heard too many horror stories of peoples' property being confiscated with no recourse.  I will stick to the allowable limits and let someone else challenge the rule by declaring it !  LOL

Mine comes across as Travel which is why I get 3x points.  Otherwise it would just be 2x points.

It is not a big deal as long as you declare it and have a reason for having it.  They will file a notice with the IRS, but it is similar to what a bank files if you transfer more than 10K between accounts.  It's when you don't declare it you will have "some 'splaining to do".

I see mine as a travel purchase. I have a high enough credit limit that I have never needed to switch cards, but I also won't spend more than I would have paid for a cruise at the casino. I bring a certain amount of cash, usually no more than $500 and never have left with more than double that after doing my tip outs.

As long as you declare it and can show proof of source, it’s usually not a big deal regardless of the amount.

This will essentially be my first RC cruise as my last one must have been almost 10 years ago. Looking to get minimum JS suites going forward so this first trip might be a little expensive lol
