Questions from First-Timer Ever Cruiser

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

Our first ever cruise is in 29 days, 2 hours, 52 minutes... We'll be on Symphony of the Seas and I am so ridiculously excited!

A huge thank you to @Matt and everyone in the community here. You have helped me plan, get information, and keep me super excited since we booked our cruise last year.

I do have a few questions I couldn't seem to find answers to, or found conflicting information about. I'm hoping you all can give me a little clarity.

  1. Does the upstairs bed in the CLS separate into two beds? We have two and are hoping my husband and I can have one to ourselves and bump our three (ages 20, 17, 15) kids to the other one. They love each other, but not enough to share a bed. 😆
  2. Can you order MDR meals if you are seated in Coastal Kitchen on nights other than Lobster Night? I've seen conflicting information about this. Would it depend on the ship crew? If so, has anyone done it on Symphony?
  3. I think I remember reading somewhere that suites can order the MDR menu for room service. Can you order Coastal Kitchen for room service, too?
  4. I've heard it mentioned that suites have an expanded room service menu. Is that just referring to ordering from the MDR (and maybe Coastal Kitchen), or is there even more to it?
  5. Would it be rude (or even allowed) to sit with my family at the Izumi Hibachi table but not order from the hibachi menu myself? They all want to eat at the hibachi, but I am more drawn to the Tonkatsu Ramen and stuff from the Izumi Sushi menu.
  6. We are not a "go by a schedule" type family, or at least, they are not, so we will not be booking any shore excursions in Saint Maarten or St. Thomas. I've read that it is really easy to get a cab by the cruise port. But, is it easy to get a cab elsewhere on the islands? We are really hoping to go to a perfume making class on the French side of Saint Maarten, but want to be sure it'll be easy to get a cab back to the Dutch side and back to the port.
  7. What kind of activities are available in the teen club? I don't really see much listed in the post-shutdown Cruise Compasses.
  8. Our oldest lives in a different part of the country. If the absolute worst happens and one of us other 4 test positive on the home covid test (it will not happen, it will not happen) and we have to cancel, will him not physically living with us (an therefore not a close contact) cause issues with the cancellation?

I think that is it. For now. 🙃 Thanks!

Star class definitely yes.

Sky Class, wouldn't hurt to ask or the the CK staff seems very friendly, you can ask.  There is no hard rule about this.  Once for me, it came down the the server....he literally went down and got it himself for us.

Only in Star Class.

I don't even know if this would be allowed. Hibachi only allows for a certain number of seats and under normal times, it can be hard to get in sometimes.  Now, with covid restrictions, I am going to take a guess they would not want to give up a hibachi seat for a guest who just wants the seat itself and not the experience.

Correct, being able to order from the MDR when open is the expanded room service menu.

On Harmony they did in the CLS I was in. Is this across the board, no clue.

Shouldn't be an issue. Cancellation of a room is an all or none type deal. Problem would be the reverse, if the lone one had to cancel. You'd end up either having to cancel all or accept only getting port taxes and fees back.

The only input I have here is for cabs in other parts of the island on St. Thomas.  I think if you grab a cab to one of the popular beaches, it is fairly easy to get a ride back to the port.  Keeping in mind the "cabs" in St Thomas are most often big open air jeep/bus things that they pack to bursting and will sit there for ages while they wait for people to fill it up.  If you go somewhere random on the island - we often have gone to a private marina - it can be very hit-or-miss with cabs.  We've had a van stop for us and add us on to his list of stops.  I still am not sure he was actually a taxi lol.  Others may chime in who have greater experience.  It may be possible to call a cab, but I have found very mixed reviews of that scenario in my research for a better way to get around St Thomas.  Whatever you do, don't cut it close to when you need to be back on board.  "Island Time" is real!
