Waiting for Spectra's Cabaret. Star class reserved seating directly in front of where I am. I could not tell where Sky Class seating was.

Quick post before dinner. Hubby and kids went roller skating in the SeaPlex. I did not go. I avoid that place like the plague. Too much like work lol.
    ?: Hubby

After that it was soft serve ice cream time. It was nice that there was a hand washing station right near it.

Dinner time! CK and Spectra's Cabaret tonight.

Kids are having Sorrento's pizza and chips on the balcony and I had some time to put this together. This was probably the coolest sailaway I have experienced. After putting this together I had to laugh at myself, I am the whimpiest Canadian. Can you tell I hate the cold? Lol. Hence the retirement plan to move to Florida.

CK Night 2: Formal night 1

For D2, my picky eater. At least it looks nice lol.

Lobster Salad: A; on the small side but good flavours and fresh

Zucchini Spaghetti: Interesting twist on Spaghetti in that the noodles are actualLy  Zucchini and it is in a Marinara sauce. Not to my liking as the texture is off for me but hubby likes it. The flavours are good and it's a fairly healthy dish. Grade: A-

Caesar salad: Fresh...interesting set up...other than that, it's Caesar salad. Grade: A

Chicken leg: I did not try this on Harmony and wanted to give it a try tonight. Sorry to say that I did not enjoy it. The flavours were wonderful but the texture was weird. It's almost as if the chicken seemed ground up. Not sure if I am explaining this well but it was just strange.  Grade: B-

Pappardelle: Excellent flavours, pasta could have been a bit more "al-dente" but overall a good, solid dish.  Grade: A

Crab and Shrimp Crusted Pollock: This was Hubby's dish. He liked it enough to order it a second time (he had this on Harmony). He's not here right now to give it a rating. Living it up in the Seaplex with the kids. That's what cruising with kids is like ?

    Dessert!

As mentioned before, D2 is a very picky eater. Our waiter is amazingly patient with her. She took it upon herself to create her own desser tonight. It's chocolate chip cookies with a cup of vanilla ice cream, whip cream, and chocolate sauce for dipping. She said it was delicious! So I guess the rating is A+? ?

Valrhona Chocolate Bar: What can I say about this? It's rich chocolate, melts in your mouth, yum!  Rating: A+

After dinner we went to see "The Gift" in the Royal Theatre. Set design, choreography, vocals, acting, dancing, all superb!  Storyline...a bit strange. I almost want to see it again as I had a really hard time following this one.
Currently passing time writing this as we wait for the late night comedy show.  The comedian is Kivi Rogers. He did a bit on the Welcome Show last night. We found him quite funny so heading back to see his late night version. CD Clo continues to be very entertaining and amusing. This is our first time having a female CD. The vibe is definitely different, but a good different.
Still have not had a chance to do WJ recon. ? Going to try tomorrow...
Random stray observation: Star Class does not seem to be as "in your face" on Anthem. Other than the Theatre, I have yet to see a Genie walking around. On Oasis class, we saw them everywhere.
Good night for now.  Hopefully tomorrow brings warmer weather, and sun. It was cloudy and cold today. Then it rained...

    Cabin Photos:
This is a Family Junior Suite (FJ). The FJ on Anthem can sleep either 4 or 5. The ones on Deck 8 and 9 can accommodate 5 and the ones on the other decks only sleep 4.
    Powder room: Toilet/sink

Full Bath: shower with curtain ?, sink, toilet. One complaint is that there is a lack of storage in here. Shelves on the wall would have been great.

L'Occitane bath amenities in suites for anyone who is wondering.

    Day 3 - At Sea
Good morning/ afternoon all. We totally lost time this morning as we did not wake up until an hour ago. Interesting observation as I have never done daylight savings on a ship before. My phone said 10am when I woke up as did all our other devices, but, Royal IQ, wonky as usual, looked like this:

Threw me right off as I did not know if being on Airplane mode affected my phone's ability to change time on it's own. So I texted my sister back at home to see what time it really was. Phone was right. Royal was wrong. Down here on Deck 4, the big clock on the Esplanade also says 11am. Maybe this is cost savings by RC to ensure that some people become pier runners tomorrow ?
    It's bit warmer today.

And since I cannot cannot compete with @twangster's tech skills here's another view from the balcony to show where we really are ?

I am not a bot, fish, or a man in short sleeves lol.
Currently siting in La Patisserie waiting for WJ to open for lunch, since we missed breakfast. I can't remember if @twangster included this in his blogs but here is the menu:

Nice place to relax and blog ?
Going to check on Hubby and kids back in the cabin. Hopefully chaos did not break out while I was here.

Lunch in the WJ was uneventful. It was crowded again and people were not moving through it well. We got there at opening too...11:30am.  I didn't bother taking food pics. It was too crowded but did get some dessert station pics.

Back from rock climbing. Hubby and kids got there at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm start. They were first in line. By 2pm when I got there the line was very long. I did not get a pic in the frenzy but the line started to the left of the wall and it was past the giraffe (not my pic...credit to google search).

    He's done it before:

Ever wonder what happens if you lose your  seapass card?  After rock climbing hubby could not find his. He went back to rock climbing to see if he dropped it. No luck. Went to to guest services and they basically deactivate your card and WOW band and issue you a new card. Pretty easy. Then D1 found hubby's card...location? In the slot for the lights! ?

Our first cruise ever was a Disney cruise.  We loved it.  I believe we took that one shortly before the prices of Disney cruises skyrocketed.  When we went to book another one, I got massive sticker shock and looked elsewhere.  Ended up doing Royal on Freedom and loved it too.  Just got back from cruise #3, which was on Harmony.  Freedom seemed a little bigger than Disney, but not crazy big.  Harmony was crazy big.  Going from Disney to Allure (which is the same size as Harmony), you are going to feel like Allure is twice as big as a Disney ship, and that can be overwhelming.  It is going to take you 4 days or so to figure out where everything is and how to get around, so don't freak about it on day one.  Just go with it.  My best advice to you is to plan ahead as much as you can, don't just wing it.  I would say make reservations for all the shows in the cruise planner, and then arrive about 20 mins early and wait for them to start letting people in.  This way you will get decent seats.  Stop back in your room after dinner to grab the next days cruise planner and read it over while you are sitting in your seat waiting for the show to start.  Do all of the shows, including any comedy shows, they are always good.  Transfer your reservation to a travel agent.  Like others here we use MEI, it is free and they know Royal well.  Don't worry about the dining wait list.  They tell everyone this far out that the early dinner session is on a waitlist.  Tell the travel agent you want the early seating and you will get it.  They will be able to help you with room assignment too.  I could have sworn Royal has rooms with pull down beds to sleep 3 people.  Regarding the food, I am not a hard core foodie, but I have eaten in my fair share of fine dining restaurants, and I will tell you the MDR on Royal is just fine, probably just a small step down from a fine dining restaurant.  Royal's specialty restaurants are great too, but they are not a requirement, especially if you don't want to spend the money.  One big difference on Royal compared to Disney is that Royal does not have the restaurants around the pools serving burgers and chicken fingers and what not during the day.  So if you want to eat lunch you will have to go to the Windjammer or to the various free restaurants on the ship (they have a hot dog place, a pizza place, etc - just not by the pools).  We normally do breakfast in the Windjammer early (before 8) and if it's a sea day then head to the pool to secure chairs (they go really fast on sea days) and we skip lunch, but with young kids I know they can't wait until dinner to eat. Royal does have the ice cream machines near the pools like Disney though.  If you do eat in the MDR, sign up for family dining.  They will serve your kids first and then the Adventure Ocean staff will come and pick your kids up from the MDR and take them to the kids clubs.  You can then finish your meal in peace!  My kids didn't love the kids clubs on Disney, but I can't get them to leave the ones on Royal.  That is subjective and every kid is different though.  Unlike Disney, you don't rotate dining restaurants, you will be at the same table in the same MDR every night.  The menu will have several staple items that you can get every night, and then several new items each night.  I usually have a hard time picking what to eat, there are a lot of good options.
I have several friends that are Disney fanatics, and if that is you that is fine, but get it in your head going in that this is not Disney.  Royal has tons of stuff for kids, but it is not quite Disney level for kids.  In my opinion, while Disney excels in kids entertainment, they lack a little in adult entertainment.  Once the shows are over, I found the night life on a Disney ship to be kind of dull.  Royal's bars and clubs will be hopping every night until well after midnight.  Adventure Ocean is open until 2 am, and I know it sounds crazy, but most nights I go to get my kids around midnight and there are a ton of kids in there still, and my kids are mad that I am coming for them "so early".  I just find that for the money, Royal is a much better value for it's mix of kid and adult stuff - more of a vacation for everyone.  Royal is usually about half the cost of Disney, give or take.  Those ice cream Mickey bars are good, but they are not that good!  This blog is the only place you need to go for information on Royal.  If you can't find the answer here, then the answer doesn't exist!  So just post away, everyone here is super friendly.  Good luck, and enjoy your planning.

Here is a breakdown of food on Allure:
    Complimentary Restaurants
Windjammer: The main buffet. It never lets you down.
Main Dining Room: Complimentary sit-down service available for all guests.
Park Café: Casual café in Central Park some would compare to a Panera.
Solarium Bistro: Healthier dining in the adults only area. It is a buffet during lunch but converts to a sit down restaurant/buffet hybrid in the evening.
Vitality Café: Healthy quick-serve options located right outside the gym. Also has protein shakes.
Sorrento's: Pizza joint in the Promenade that is open 24 hours.
Café Promenade: Serves sandwiches and other items in the Promenade.
Dog House: Hot dogs on the Boardwalk.
Coastal Kitchen: This is a main dining room for suite guests only.
    Specialty Restaurants
Chops Grille: Royal Caribbean's classic steakhouse. Usually around $49 for dinner and $22 for lunch.
150 Central Park: Farm to table style restaurant by celebrity chef Michael Schwartz. Usually around $49 for dinner and $22 for lunch.
Izumi: Great sushi. Also has a hibachi option like a Benihana. Pricing is a la carte for sushi and $45 for the hibachi experience.
Giovanni's Table: Classic Italian restaurant. Usually around $35 for dinner and $25 for lunch.
Sabor: Mexican restaurant with great guacamole and margaritas. Usually around $22 for lunch and dinner.
Johnny Rockets: A classic Johnny Rockets just like on land. There is a small charge for lunch and dinner but they serve complimentary breakfast.
Chef's Table: This is the Ferrari of specialty restaurants. It's a private 5 course experience. Usually around $95.

If you decide to eat at multiple specialty restaurants I highly recommend a dining package of some kind. A dining package makes the cost per meal significantly lower. Usually around $20-$30 per meal depending on the package which is almost a 50% savings at some restaurants. There may also be an option for buy one get one free available depending on your sailing. Also, do not make a reservation for kids 12 and under. Just let them know onboard that your kids will be joining you and there is a $10 charge for kids rather than the full price you would pay online. You don't have to eat at a specialty restaurant at all if you don't want to, but it definitely adds to the experience.

Good morning all!  In the words of @twangster, IT'S CRUISE DAY!!!
Our stay last night at Embassy Suites was quite pleasant. All in all, a very decent hotel. Beds were comfy, tons of space in the room (all the rooms are suites here), friendly staff. The bath products here are Neutrogena, that might be important for some out there ? and the bathroom here more than passes hotel snob approval.
Just sitting downstairs waiting for the kids to finish up breakfast. We are impressed, the complimentary breakfast buffet here is quite extensive. There is the usual continental breakfast items, oatmeal, fresh fruit, the usual hot items (French toast, bacon, sausages, hash browns), 24hr hot beverage station, and even a made to order omelette station. Hubby was pretty impressed by that as most of the other complimentary hotel breakfasts that we've had in the past did not have that option. There's also tons of space here for eating.

Overall, this hotel is not a bad choice at all for a pre-cruise stay. My only complaint, and it's minor, is that you can hear the planes quite clearly at all hours. So if you are a light sleeper, that might be a problem.
The plan for the next few hours is to pack up, check out, and head on over to Cape Liberty. It's -1 degrees Celsius (feels like -7) right now. It's a cold one!  For my American friends, it's 30 degrees Fahrenheit (feels like 19). @SeasTheDayNJ I think it might be too cold for sail away in flip flops and sandals lol. Better luck next Saturday.
Off for now, will check back in when we get to the ship!! ?

    Pre-cruise report:

Sailing:  March 9-17, 2018, Anthem of the Seas, 8 Night Bahamas cruise

Sailing with:   Hubby and daughters, ages 11 and 9, who I will refer to as D1 and D2 from this point onward.

Flying from: DTW to EWR via Delta.

Pre-cruise hotel:  Embassy Suites in Elizabeth, NJ.
We chose this hotel based on several factors.  When travelling with the kids, I like to look for hotels that provide a complimentary breakfast.  It is one less thing to worry about.  Also, this hotel came highly recommended by another site that I like, EatSleepCruise.com for value, space, and ease of getting to the port.  Also, being the hotel/cruise snob that I am, this was one of the few in the area that looked relatively clean and modern.

    The itinerary is as follows:
Day 1 – Cape Liberty, NJ
    Day 2 and 3 – At Sea
    Day 4 – Port Canaveral
    Day 5 – Coco Cay
    Day 6 – Nassau
    Day 7 & 8 – At Sea
Day 9 – Cape Liberty, NJ

We booked the Kennedy Space Center guided tour through RC shore excursions.  Got a great rate on it during the Cruise planner Christmas sale.  At Coco Cay, we have the Aqua Park and Slide combo purchased for the kids.  And Hubby and D2 are going to do the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Encounter in Nassau.
We are lazy cruisers.  The ship is often our destination.  So, going on 3 excursions (only two for D1 and I) is actually quite the splurge for us.

    Cabin:
Unless the last-minute upgrade fairy strikes it’s going to be a Family Junior Suite (FJ) this time around.  Initially, we went with 2 connecting balconies, but then KSF came up in November and we switched it to the FJ so that I could get my dinners in CK.  Picking a cabin with our kids is a bit more difficult.  No one sleeps well when the girls share a bed so we needed a room that has a Pullman or can accommodate a rollaway.  Also, with 2 girls and myself, a 2nd bathroom is becoming a necessity.  So, the FJ fit those requirements as it has 1 ½ baths, and we have one on Deck 9 that has an additional Pullman.
Our plan was to book the FJ and then wait for the 45-60 day price drop (as I have seen on many sailings) and upgrade to a full suite.  However, this was one of the few times that this did not work out. The price did drop around the 60 day mark, however, KSF ended by then so it was not worth it to upgrade.

    Random Pre-cruise thoughts:
    -    It’s our first time:
    •    Bringing our kids on RC.  We have sailed DCL with them 3 times in the past.
    •    In a Junior suite.  We’ve done interiors, ocean view, regular balconies, and full suites but never Sea class.
    •    Sailing Quantum Class.  As many of you know, I am a huge Oasis class fan.  I also tend to favour the newer and bigger ships.  However, Hubby does not like to sail the same ship twice in a short time span.  That’s where Anthem fit the bill.  It also worked out nicely that this sailing just made the cut off date for KSF.  I must admit that I do feel some apprehension about this sailing.  As a creature of habit, I will miss my morning coffee and nightly strolls in Central Park and the amazing shows in the Aqua Theater.  In addition, sailing out of NJ in March makes me a bit nervous.  The weather and seas are always up in the air and sailing out of cold weather (and snow now, thanks to Nor'easter) doesn't quite sit well with me.
    •    Doing a Live Blog!  I can’t say enough how much I love this RC Blog community and how much I have learned and benefited from all of you.  I see this as a way of contributing back.
    -    We plan to eat most of our dinners in Coastal Kitchen.  We were able to make reservations in the Cruise Planner this time.  This option became available in the Cruise Planner around 170 days out.  Disappeared for a while and then came back again.  When we sailed on Harmony, we had to wait until we got the Concierge email or book on board.  Going from what others have reported on other boards, it seems that you can make reservations ahead of time on Quantum class ships but not Oasis class.  We also made reservations for dinner at Jamie’s for one night.  The pasta was calling, and we could not turn away.
    -    We purchased VOOM for 2 devices.  Too bad for the kids but @twangster saved the day for them.
    -    All other entertainment reservations (shows, iFly, North Star) have been made.  These all showed up in the Cruise Planner about 160 days out.
    -    This cruise sold out over a month ago.  It reached the ¾ lifeboat capacity back in November!  It’s March break in Ontario and according CC roll call and FB pages for this sailing there will be lots of kids and many Toronto Maple Leafs fans!  Hubby will be in good company!
    -    The teacher in me is hoping that this can be an interactive live blog. Meaning, if there is anything you would like me to find out please do not hesitate to ask away.  I will do my best to check back regularly and find out for you.
    -    Lastly, I will likely be doing most of my blogging from my phone, so if you are replying to something that has pics attached, please do not include the pics in your reply.  Thanks!  ?

This is the biggest component. Have you ever noticed on a YouTube video you have the little ad at the bottom or the video is delayed by an ad? Those are the ads that goes back to the ones who upload the videos. Some other things may be sponsored. Another way like how Matt can run this site is something like Patreon or a storefront like Spreadshirt. When you support them through those sites you help keep them producing good content. There are other ways like Amazon links that when you click it they get a small % back for the recommendation.

Social Media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have become the main source for younger generations to absorb content. I am looking into buying a new video camera to capture footage of my vacations and I didn't even consider going to a Best Buy or to their website at all. Instead the first thing I thought to do was go to YouTube and search videos of people reviewing the video cameras I was looking for. The people in the videos were professional photographers and/or die hard enthusiasts and demonstrated everything the camera could do in detail with examples of picture quality, etc. I was able to get knowledgeable insight about the product instantly that no high school kid working weekends at Best Buy would ever be able to give me.
A company might pay millions to have their commercial air during a huge television event and just hope that their target market sees the ad. With influencers they can pay much less, or even just send their product, to an influencer who already has millions of followers that fit right into their target market. MSC didn't invite the influencers on the boat and hope that people would see all of the influencers in this particular video. Rather they invited them so that the influencers could create and post their own videos to their own social media sites with millions of followers who may have never even thought about or been exposed to cruising before. In terms of how they make money there are tons of different ways for them to do it, but none of them are easy and it is definitely still work to get there. A lot of influencers were famous before they became "influencers" and found a way to capitalize on their following. Royal Caribbean's "adventurist" Shay Mitchell is a great example of this.

If I have questions about a Royal Caribbean cruise I don't call Royal Caribbean or go to their website, I come here. Check out the Royal Caribbean blog podcasts on the website or on iTunes for free. Matt also does live Facebook and Periscope Q&A sessions daily where he always answers everyone's questions in real time. They're fun to listen to when you have a question or just want to get excited about your vacation.

Sailing out of San Juan last night you can see how much of the San Juan area itself has power and looks quite normal at night.

What's up guys! I thought some of you out there might find this interesting!   I'm Chris from Liverpool, and I am a crew member on Independence of The Seas! I work in the Duty Free shops.   If any of you have ever wondered what being a Royal Caribbean crew member is really like, give my cruise article a read, and let me know if you recognise me. (there are no ads on my article)   I talk about my job, social life, travel, and overall ship life.   www.chriswongvlogs.com/work-on-a-cruise-ship-uk   Ask me any questions about working on cruise ships, or Royal Caribbean in general, and I will give you all the gossip. For example, what is the crew cabins like? Who better to ask than someone who has been on the inside!
