Buy a day pass for the vaporetto and use them like a hop on hop off bus. Go out to Murano and Burano if you have time. Eat pizza and gelato. Visit St Marks but don’t eat or drink in the square. Walk a few streets back. There is a department store near Rialto bridge which has a roof terrace you can visit for free. Views over Venice are outstanding, prices in the shop extortionate. Make sure you are on deck for the sail away. If you are lucky one of the staff will be on the bridge pointing out the names of the different churches and famous buildings that you are passing. It’s the best sail-in or out you will ever experience. We are lucky enough to have done it several times and I get choked up with emotion every time. I just love the place and I hope you will to.

supergran got a reaction from MicDay in RCC excursions vs 3rd party excursions for Mediterranean Cruise
The first time we cruised to Florence and Rome we did the ships excursion called ‘Rome on your own’ and the same to Florence. Basically you are taken into the city and then you wander on your own and meet back at a prearranged time. This is cheaper than a guided tour and you have the security of knowing the ship will wait for any delays. Since then we have caught the train independently and just allowed plenty of time to return. On one cruise the ‘Rome on your own’ passengers were on our  train so we knew we were safe. Same with the ferry to Capri. If you catch the same ferry as the tour group, make sure you take the next to last one back as the tours usually catch the last ferry.

We were on a Hawaii cruise last Christmas. Having previously visited a Pearl Harbour we climbed Diamond Head this time. Not too strenuous for a couple of 66 year olds.

This is actually an easy 30 minute train ride (cost about $5 per person) from the station fairly close to the Port. Grab a cab (or 2 or 3) from the Port to Yoshizuka Station and then take the express train to Kidonanzoin-Mae Station (4 stops). From there the walk is just a few minutes. You would need to go earlier rather than later, as the Buddha closes at 5p. After that, head back and spend time exploring the port area.

If you want to avoid crowds, stay in Keelung town instead of heading into Taipei. If you're up for walking, you can see Khoo Tsu-song Old Mansion and Keelung Zhongzheng Park, and just wander about seeing the neat stuff. There are lots of twisty roads, hills, and stairs, so only do this if you want the exercise!
