So we will be stopping for a day in Port Canaveral in a couple of weeks, and will be renting a car. As a New Englander, we grow no oranges (that I know of), so we would like to visit a place that has fresh Florida oranges while there. Two questions: are they in season in early October; and if so, does anyone know of anywhere near the cruise port that we can go to try legit Florida oranges? Thank you!

Peak citrus season in Florida is a bit later...it starts to pick up in October and runs to the middle of the year.

The coast where Port Canaveral is located isn't known for their groves.  I don't know how long you have in port or how comfortable you are willing to travel, but central Florida has a lot of fruit stand locations that sell directly from the groves.  A lot of the ones that have been around for a long time don't tend to open up until November as the season starts to pick up.  I'd research some names and see when they open up for the season before making any trips out there.

You may also have luck searching for a farmer's market in the Port Canaveral area, but most are very limited in their days and hours of operations.  Also I've heard Cocoa Beach Winery may carry and sell the fruit and juice, so it may be worth a visit or a call at least when you are in port.

South of the port about an hour to hour and a half is Indian River County which produces a lot of local citrus.  I don't know if a port stop in PC would be enough time to get out there and again, early October is at the very beginning of the season.

Surprisingly, the local grocery stores import their produce so you have to really look at what's offered to see if it's been grown in Florida.
