DublinFC
Hello, Looking at some of the excursions listed and I am seeing biodegradable sunscreen listed as "what to bring" item. Just checking with the cruising community to see if "reef safe" is the same thing. I am seeing reef safe labeling when I am checking Amazon's listings. CrimsonCruiser
While I can't directly answer if they're the same (though google says yes), I would like to direct you to All Good Reef Safe Sunscreen. Based on a few lists I've found the 5 ingredients that have been proven to harm reefs are: oxybenzone avobenzone octisalate octocrylene homosalate octinoxate and most reef-safe labels only remove oxybenzone and Octinoxate. While they are still considered okay in some places, I didn't want to have any cause for concern while snorkeling or from the excursion staff so I made sure to get a mineral sunscreen and All Good is the only one I've found that is mineral AND comes in aerosol form. Hockeyman55
Good topic, I had the same concerns when I saw the same warnings for our snorkel excursion. I was looking at the Sun Bum sunscreen on Amazon, anyone have any input on that brand?
TimeRacer
Sun Bum only removes oxybenzone and octinoxate, so acceptable in some places and not others. If you look for specifically Mineral sunscreen, you have a better chance at finding things that are all good. Hawai'i has some of the strictest sunscreen laws on the planet from what I can find, so I've been using their guides while searching. Wheeler825
I did a fair amount of research on this prior to my last cruise.. The conclusion I came to is the 'reef safe' stuff is a marketing ploy and not actually based in science.

BrianAlt
So, I'm glad I saw this topic as we will be sailing out of Hawaii in May. One person in our party wondered, what are the penalties? So, I found this article... https://www.civilbeat.org/2021/08/hawaii-has-a-ban-on-sunscreen-chemicals-but-no-ones-sure-who-should-enforce-it/ We will bring a tube of "reef-safe" sunscreen. But I'm not going to go too crazy over it.
