What do you normally do with your wallet?  Do you leave it in the room in the safe or do you take it with you on excursions?  We are already taking our passports with us so is it overkill to take both?  I tend to lean towards the less is better crowd.  What is your opinion?

I will take what I need to get back on the ship, and cash or credit cards for any shore purchases. I would also bring a cruise compass, as it has the ship phone number on it. I remember noticing the wallet lump against my butt after the cruise, from not carrying it for so many days.

At the start of a cruise the specialty dining restaurants historically aren't as busy as they are later in the cruise once people discover them.  To help fill the restaurants on those first slow nights they came up with the BOGO 2 promotion.

The way it works is that they assign restaurants and once on board you will find out what they have chosen for you.  That doesn't mean you are stuck with their choices.  Upon boarding you can visit any specialty restaurant and ask them what has been assigned.  Then you can request different times or restaurants to suit your wishes.  This is something you should do soon after boarding since, as you can imagine, anyone else who booked a BOGO 2 promotion will be doing the same and restaurants reservations do fill up.

Here is a blog that @Matt wrote on specialty dining packages

I spoke to Royal Caribbean about this just last night. In my case, we only like Chops. We also want to be in the main dining hall on night two, which is usually a formal night. That means we are annoying, picky passengers. So, in order to pull off the three meal package, I'd spend some time trying to get things fixed the way we want them right after getting on the ship. For us, it wasn't worth it, and we booked Chops separately when we wanted it, even though the third meal would be something like only 10 bucks more. I would rather have things the way I want them, within reason. If you are a little flexible, I actually think the multiple night options are a great bargain. Save that money for boat drinks.

  3. Never locked mine. Sometimes I think about smuggling booze on the ship just for the sport of seeing if they would catch it. I have no problem buying alcohol on the ship, and don't mind the alcohol pricing. This would be just for fun. But I've never done it. However, if I did, I might secure an small interior part of my luggage. You'd probably still get called to the naughty room. We wound up down there on our last cruise. Not because of locked suitcases or contraband, but because we were concerned about a missing piece of luggage. (which showed up, by the way). They had huge bins of contraband and dangerous extension cords (They are a fire hazard), and all sorts of things I'd never think of trying to take on a cruise. Everyone was very nice. On the other hand, we weren't actually naughty!

Except for realtime TV (i.e., sports, etc.), why would you want to watch TV on a CRUISE??? I enjoy "The Big Bang Theory" in German as much as anyone but, come on!!! (tongue firmly in cheek!)

We were bored and tired late in the cruise, and enjoyed relaxing in our cabin and vedging out on some movies. Sometimes, I like to do nothing when I am so busy doing nothing...

Let's put it this way, I am absolutely sure every Royal ship has a safety team with a contingency plan it executes if/when an excursion turns into a disaster. I am sure once the two ships involved found out it about the incident, their plan was executed. It would go something like this: I am sure ship representatives are sent close to the scene, everyone is repeatedly asked if they would like medical attention, that group of passengers will remain as a group of passengers and brought through port security and since presumably they lost their sea passes their identities checked via the photo they took of you boarding the ship and the manifest of those who paid for the excursion, sea passes are re-issued; while still together as a group I would bet $1,000,000 that they are briefed what happens next i.e.: they will get to place free phone calls from the member services desk to family members or to get new credit cards issued, they will be given complimentary internet access for the remainder of the trip to further get their life back together, they will be offered some type of credit at the stores on board to replace some flip flops or beachwear or whatever, of course the cost of the excursion is immediately refunded. I am sure each passenger gives a narrative to their experience and a list of personal items lost. That list and the estimated grand total of the loss will be refunded by Royal with out looking twice at it. I'm guessing corporate will issue a check very shortly once you arrive home. Royal will notify your home county's customs of the event and I am sure the skids are well greased so that affected passengers can get through security and board their planes. Royal does know your flight #'s and copied your passport when you checked in on boarding day.

I will not accept that these post incident/contingency plan things did not happen or at least a very close scenario. I have sailed on way too many voyages not to know this is the way the deal goes down.

Then along comes the Bozo tweeting that somehow he wasn't advised of all this. Somehow he is unaware of what to do next. Somehow he still continues to be a victim. And, perhaps most importantly, without his voyage not even being over; somehow the whole cruise experience was ruined and therefore he is expecting compensation. Like, Royal owes him for an event that has not even occurred yet.

And don't even get me started on how many layers of insurance for Bozos valuables can come into play here...that is a very long list.

You can certainly bet local divers are looking for that wreck. Very likely not to recover wallets that have $50 in them or other personal belongings but rather to keep that garbage off their reef. The leeward side of Cozumel is very well taken care of, you will never ever find trash there.

Sorry about the rant guys and girls, but the tweeting thing really gets under my skin.

Probably he was interviewed before getting back to the ship. Trying to think positively here.

As a scuba diver and having dove Cozumel many times I am surprised but really that surprised something like this occurred in San Miguel. In the same breath I would also say the amount of actual danger that likely occurred was probably insignificant. These divers all have had training, plenty of floatation devices, and know how to float in the water for a few minutes. The areas a Royal scuba excursion would likely go would have many, many other dive operators operating their boats very close by (picture a boat having difficulty at the Swim with the Rays location in Grand Cayman). I absolutely know that these dive operators all have radios they use frequently and they all know each other quite well.

But the guy who who tweeted he was looking for compensation.......As a diver, as a Crown and Anchor member, as a Loyal to Royal fan, and as a RCL stockholder.....I want to punch this guy in the nose. What he tweeted/said is wrong on so many levels. Is this guy typical of my fellow passengers when we sail? 'Cause if it is, we gotta find a different way to vacation.

In a way, he got his money's worth: I am sure it was a heck of an experience, and excursions are all about experiences, right?

  7. I am cruising The Liberty on February 4th. I cruised her in.....2016? You can check my signature to be sure. The last time aboard, I experienced none of the issues this reviewer had. I had other issues with the ship, but most of my issues were with the Galveston Port Authority. Anyway, it will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable change this cruise. Frankly, I doubt it. I suspect this cruise will be even more enjoyable then my last. YMMV.

  8. When we were on Liberty last year, they held the Chef's Table meal in a roped-off part of the Windjammer. Unfortunately, it felt very cheap, and we felt pretty cheated just because of the ambiance. We have been used to Chefs Table events being held in a private dining room.

So, we are now getting ready to cruise February 4th, and the Chef's Table is now listed as taking place in Chops Grille. Has anyone cruised Liberty recently and experienced this? We swore off the Chefs Table if it was in Windjammer again, but perhaps they have listened to us....

  9. I suppose you could just watch what's on tv. They have a creepy commercial telling people to wash their hands at every opportunity. For me, it is reminiscent of the creepiness of teletubbies. Actually, we watched several films onboard that we hadn't had an opportunity to watch before. And a documentary about Chicago. Come to think of it, on that cruise we didn't have a balcony. We had a promenade view. TV watching will probably go down with a balcony.

  10. OK, I don't sail until February 4th, but I woke up this morning with a runny nose and scratchy throat. I will probably be fine, as there is plenty of time for me to heal up. But I admit that I kind of freaked. Cough drops, Emergen-Cee drink mix, Zicam tablets, Dayquill... Close to $100 of over the counter medications! So as I calmed down (Organizing how and when to take all my medications seemed to have a calming effect), I wondered what experiences other people have had. Ever missed a cruise due to a cold or flu? What happened? What last-minute remedies worked for you? Anyone just live in a giant sterile plastic bubble as the cruice came closer?

Somewhere in Florida..   it would be a bit of a drive, but you would have access to 4 ports, 5 if you count New Orleans.  We have talked before how often we would jump on the 3-4 night cruises if we were within driving distance of Orlando...  Living in Richmond, the cost to get to most ports really adds to the overall price.

Of course, very little would ever actually entice me back to Florida to live..   :)

Yeah, I kinda like Florida, too. Enormous mosquitoes, crime rate, neighborhood alligators.....

  12. What is the best city to live in if you are a cruiser? I feel pretty lucky in DFW, because Galveston is only a days drive away, and we have a pretty good airport. But then we talked about moving down towards Galveston. How cool would that be? Then I of course thought about the number of ports reachable from a Galveston debarkation, given a 7 day cruise. Then I started thinking about New Orleans, which is growing. And those enormous ports in Florida.

We aren't moving any time soon, but I love the dream! What do you think?
