What are people's experience with sold out tours. Does more availability come up later? Do they make spots available to book while on board. Or is it a case of once they are booked up, it is gone, and no spots will become available unless there is a cancellation?

I have heard from other posts that Royal may hold back a few spaces to sell on the ship, but I don't have personal experience.  I've always picked something else in Cruise Planner before boarding.

Several answers: sometimes the Shore Excursion department is able to book additional slots (tours) with their local operators.   Yes, sometimes cancellations are available.  If still looking on line, re-check often.  If on ship, ask to be placed on waiting list.  Also, look for similar "private" or non-ship tour operators.

I've heard from the shore excursions desk on board that it's best to check around 8 pm or later at the desk because usually by then if people are going to cancel, that's when they do it.

You can also check first thing the morning of in the event someone cancelled later the night before.

On all cruises the shore excursion will bounce around but timing is everything.  On our Alaska cruise everything was sold out at expensive prices and people were waiting.  I did not try to get any of them but I was told as soon as anything opened it was taken by someone else.
