No excursions?

If you don't pick a shore excursion, what do you do in port? For instance, when we go to Grand Cayman, we stroll over to the Paradise Cafe. I ordered a cheeseburger so I could say I had a cheeseburger in paradise! Actually, i usually get the local beer and conch fritters.

I am particularly interested in Cozumel, Roatan, and Belize City. But I'd love to hear what "no excursion" people do in port for fun.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I'd stroll around any of those ports except Cozumel.

I did the Lobster Reef snorkel in Roatan which was nice and the cave tubing in Belize. Cozumel has a lot of nice Beach clubs that are all-inclusive. In January, though, we're doing a dune buggy and snorkeling excursion. We've also dinner there culinary workshop in Cozumel through Royal which was fun.

I couldn't agree with Kris more !  While COZ and GC are great walking ports, the others are really not.

BTW, Paradise is our favorite spot in GC too.  We walk there from the port and snorkel right out their back door.  The crazy thing is, the excursion boats come to the same exact place to have their paying customers snorkel that we swim to for free from Paradise.  Love those conch fritters !!

IMO if you aren't going on an excursion in Roatan or Belize, best just to stay on the ship.  Roatan's resorts are some of the most beautiful anywhere but the rest of the island is a DUMP !  ...in fact, it's slightly dangerous - not from any kind of human danger but the roads are simply treacherous.  The roads on the resort side are great but the roads that the locals use are horrific.  It's shameful, really.  I actually never get off the ship anymore in Belize. Nothing there I have any interest in seeing again.  They do have a gorgeous reef so the organized snorkeling is very good but there is no way I would ever wander around on my own.

OK, this is great stuff -- How do you guys feel about just hanging out in the little cruise ship village, grab a drink and a conch fritter, and get back on the boat? er... um.... ship? The Cozumel stop at least has Senor Frogs, where we can (GASP!) check our email. Is there a better dining spot on the little Cozumel cruise village? How about Roatan and Belize City (Coxen Cove)? Anything worth anything in the cruise villages there?

I don't recall anything that stood out in Roatan, but we only walked through the area before boarding because I neglected to set my watch correctly and we returned to the ship an hour early.  I would have preferred to spend the extra hour at Little French Key.

As for Belize City, there was a little bar there with some cheap beers, and I had lunch at Annie's Lunchbox just outside the "compound" (for lack of a better term).  But nothing there stood out as a "let's come back and just hang out here!" opportunity, especially given that Belize is a tendering port.

That said, I'm still the guy that gets off the ship at every port, because after all "I'm here", and I might as well check it out...you never know what you might find.

Since I am a gambler, Cozumel just opened a casino this year, that is where I will be on my 2017 cruise there. Belize has casinos, not sure about Roatan.

I went to Senor Frogs about two months ago was very unhappy with it. It is a tourist trap, that charges outrageous prices for drinks, food, etc. I didn't enjoy it at all, in fact, we left before we ordered.

Cruising December 2016 with stop in Nassau, Bahamas and Cozumel, Mexico. Planning to stay on board except to the beach in Cozumel. Which is the 'nicest', Cleanest, best service BEACH Club? We would like to have chairs and an umbrella set up for us upon arrival. Can we get drink service on the beaches there? Plan to take 'RC' excursions only.

In Cozumel, I would avoid RC excursion and go to one of the beach clubs on your own.  The ones that you book through the ship will be very crowded as they cater to multiple cruise lines.

Are you looking for something that is all-inclusive or a la carte?  I enjoyed Mr. Sancho's last year.  For about $55, we had full use of the facilities, kayaks, beach chairs and umbrella, food, and drink.
