Poker Tournaments

Recommended Posts

These tourneys started out at $100 PP buy-in (with some rebuys along the way), then went down to $75 PP and now back up to $100 PP.  I think it is ship-dependent, too.  They have to get enough money from the tourneys to cover the cost of the "free" cruise and if they do not accumulate enough money from entry fees and rebuys, they will not give away the free cruise but will award cash awards for top finishers (after a nice rake off the top for the casino, of course).

I'm curious about these tournaments. If I were to enter one offered on my October sailing (BIG if, as SWMBO would have to be cool with me being away for potentially hours), does that entry basically give me an initial stack of chips, and I just play until either I'm eliminated or I'm the last one standing at my table each round? Do the tourneys go all day, or just a few hours each day?

Always had dreams of one day entering the World Series of Poker tournament, would settle for just being in a small on-ship tourney for some fun and some small chance at a free cruise or cash payout.

There are a series of qualifying tournaments throughout the cruise.  Once you win (or qualify....sometimes they will take the top 2 or even 3 finishers, depending upon how many people have signed up throughout the week) in one of the qualifiers, you are automatically in the "finals" which is usually held the last sea day of the cruise. Then, the winner of that final tournament is the winner of the "free" cruise (usually held the first or second week of December) UNLESS there were not enough entrants and rebuys to pay for the "free" cruise, in which case they will award cash prizes for the top finalists and nobody goes to the big show.  There are chances throughout the qualifiers to rebuy so just b/c you may go out early, you can choose to pay again and remain in the tourney or you can just limp off and fade away if you go out.  You can also enter as many of the qualifiers as you want to in order to try and qualify for the finals.

Don't worry too much about the length of time that you would be away from the fam.  These tournaments are designed to be QUICK.  The blinds double every 10 minutes and are designed to winnow out the weak players quickly which is one reason why I don't usually play.  Even the finals go quickly.  I wouldn't expect for any of the prelims or the final to be more than an hour.  This is NOT the WPT World Series by any stretch !!  I have been on a WPT cruise....but that is another story....
