Just got off the Explorer a few hours ago and wanted to give anyone who has an AFT Balcony booked a heads up! YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE BALCONY The ship has a serious soot issue that they are aware off but can do nothing about at this time! What this means is that you are paying a premium price for an oceanview cabin. We sat outside for about 10 minutes then had to go inside to shower as we were black. If you have time to change cabin I would highly recommend it, if not go to guest services and highlight the issue if it's still ongoing when you board. I did this ( nicely without shouting and understanding that it's a mechanical issue) I was more that happy with the outcome

Looking for other cruises that are either taking this trip or have been on it. What is the best way to get from Marco Polo airport to the Ravena Cruise Port. What are some great Royal sponsored or non-Royal sponsored excursions.

Good morning everyone! As the title says, we will be doing a side by side sailing coming up a week from Monday out of Miami. As long as data/wi-fi/VOOM cooperates I will try to post as live as I can. I'll put some of the background and details below, and will also be commenting on our before/after plans as well so feel free to skip past all that if it's not your thing. Forewarning this first post will be a long one. I was back and forth on doing a blog, but I know I really appreciate reading them to get me by until my next sailing. As we go throughout the trip, feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer as I can. Who: Myself (Cody) and my wife (Ainslie). I'm active duty AF currently stationed in Colorado Springs. Just got back to the area in April after living 30 minutes south of Port Canaveral for almost five years, so this will be our first cruise in years where we have to fly to the port which was a big driver in the longer trip. No kids, so aside from getting the vacation time we have the flexibility to cruise any time of the year. We love this time of year as the weather is perfect, it's typically cheaper, and longer sailings (Explorer) often have a much more laid-back feel to them which we like. We are Emerald C&A members coming just short of Diamond after these sailings and won't be in suites so I won't be much help in regards to those aspects/questions. Why these sailings?: We did 14 nights b2b on Navigator a couple years ago over the exact same timeframe and loved it. We got off that sailing and immediately knew we had to get back to the ABCs, which this time is on Explorer. We considered doing the 5 night over Thanksgiving and making it a true b2b again, but this one went to Labadee & Jamaica and we're already doing Labadee the second sailing. We really enjoyed Navigator and were excited to see the amplified ship so got a great rate a year ago on the 4 night Thanksgiving sailing and we get to go to Coco Cay. I went in September but my wife has never been as we missed it the previous two attempts before the pier was installed. We'll get to sail on one new ship to us and one revamped ship coupled with getting back to our favorite ports in the ABCs so it was a no-brainer! Escaping the Colorado cold doesn't hurt either. Staterooms: Navigator we'll be in a deck 7 Promenade Room. Originally had the exact same room # on Explorer, but after final payment date the rates on Oceanview Balconies dropped to the point where we upgraded for less than $100, so we'll have a deck 7 Oceanview Balcony on the Starboard side which we prefer. Onboard Extras: We purchased the Deluxe beverage package + VOOM for myself and the Refreshment for my wife on both sailings. I waffled a bit on this but in the end got a rate we were happy with and I love not having to worry about a bill at the end for drinks. Coupled with the fact that due to work we may not get to cruise next year and it was a fairly easy decision. On Navigator I booked the UDP for us as there are some new venues I wanted to try and the price was $99pp so not bad. VOOM came with my DX package but we would've purchased anyways. No specialty dining on Explorer as we have some longish port days so a couple nights MDR but a lot of casual WJ meals for us. Travel: More in the itinerary to come but we're flying on the red-eye from Denver next Saturday morning at 12:45! Flying into Orlando to spend time with friends. We're flying Frontier (I know), but the ticket price was a few hundred cheaper than other airlines which allowed us to spend some time both before and after the cruise in Florida. After disembarking on the 8th we'll head back up to Orlando to get a couple days at WDW before flying out late on the 9th back to Denver. Got some great pricing on one way rentals both Orlando to Miami and in reverse with Avis. Dropping of the rental the night before the cruise so will use Uber/Lyft to get to the ship. Itinerary: 23 Nov- Fly to Orlando, spend day/night in Melbourne with friends 24 Nov- Drive to Miami, one night at the Gabriel downtown 25 Nov- Board Navigator 26 Nov- Nassau (8:00am-6:00pm) 27 Nov- Coco Cay (7:00am-5:00pm) 28 Nov- Sea Day (Thanksgiving) 29 Nov- Turnaround day, board Explorer 30 Nov- Sea Day 1 Dec- Labadee (8:00am-5:00pm) 2 Dec- Sea Day 3 Dec- Willemstad, Curacao (9:00am-8:00pm) 4 Dec- Kralendijk, Bonaire (8:00am-8:00pm) 5 Dec- Oranjestad, Aruba (8:00am-7:00pm) 6-7 Dec- Sea Days 8 Dec- Disembark, head to Orlando/Disney 9 Dec- Fly home late Excursions: Nassau- My wife is doing some sort of dolphin thing (I believe) and I'm going to just walk around, get a bite to eat, and spend some time at Pirate Republic Brewing (I'm a big beer guy) Coco Cay- I've got the all-day waterpark pass, but aside from that a leisurely day Labadee- Nothing planned, just relax Curacao- Rented a car through Advance and plan to drive up to some of the more remote beaches. Afternoon/evening will be spent walking downtown and getting a bite to eat at our favorite place Bonaire- Snorkeling again with Woodwind and then relaxing in town Aruba- Local bus to our favorite dutch pancake restaurant, then plan to spend the rest of the day at Reflexions Beach Bar while my wife shops in town Again, apologies for the long post and congrats to those who stuck with it! I will start with the live portion next Saturday once we start traveling. I will not be uploading the compasses daily but if you have specific questions on those I will try to answer. Have a great weekend and thanks for following along!

Having already spent 345m (indy, nav & mar) and announced 427m (voy, oasis & allure) will royal scale down the amp on the remaining ships? I know adventure already received some of the upgrades in 2016 (water slides, splash away bay & new staterooms) so they may spend a lot less on her. I was expecting explorer to get the 100m refresh (sailing her in 9/2020). Now I'm hoping she gets it.

Hi all, I was on a recent explorer of the sea cruise and purchased the USB photo package. Unfortunately I lost the USB and I'm devastated as these were the nicest photos my partner and I of 10 ten years have ever taken together. As it's the holidays I haven't been able to get any help from RCI about getting the photos again. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the photos again after the cruise ? Appreciate any advise. Thanks Sarah

Hello Fellow Cruisers, I've purchased the refreshment drinks package for my coming trip on Explorer of the Seas and noted in the fine print that: "*All Beverage Packages exclude any beverages served inside licensed StarbucksĀ® stores.". So in an effort to find out more, I found Matt Hochberg's article about the refreshment package and it states that "Royal Caribbean defines "premium coffees" as cappuccinos, espressos, and lattes. Thus, espresso based drinks are included with the Royal Refreshment package at any restaurant, bar, or cafe that serves espresso beverages.". Which is great because I love my morning expresso... However further on it says that "On non-Oasis class ships, the Royal Refreshment package does include Illy or Starbucks beverages from locations like Cafe Promenade or Cafe Latte-Tudes.". To my understanding, Explorer of the Seas is a Voyager Class, so as an avid coffee drinker, can anyone tell me where/which cafe's I can utilise my refreshment package and get an expresso on Explorer of the Seas? Thanks! Koshie

Hello, and thank you for reading. My parents are traveling to Alaska on the Explorer of the Seas over their 40th Anniversary. This is special not only because it's 40 years, but they have never taken a cruise as a couple and never been to Alaska (or Seattle!). Their three sons have created a photo album book that we would very much like for them to open on the cruise ship during their vacation, however, Royal WILL NOT allow us to ship them anything, and will not assist in getting it on the boat for us. My Ask; I'm looking for someone traveling on this same ship to deliver the album to my parents. We can ship the book anywhere in the US, but really haven't much time. If you are going on the Explorer of the Seas to Alaska on July 28th - 16 days - please reply with your contact info, or send me a direct message if you'd be willing to deliver this book to my parents. Sincerely, Their 1st born.

Explorer of the Seas - 3 Day Cruise Review Just got back from my first RCI cruise, 2nd cruise ever. We did the sample cruise out of Sydney, as my husband has never been cruising before and we wanted to see what he thought before doing a longer itinerary. Unfortunately he didn't enjoy it - the movement of the sea was a bit too much for him. He was very glad to get off the ship and back on to land. I had a blast though. My first cruise was with P&O Australia and now having been on RCI I won't do anything less. The ship was better appointed, staff friendlier and everything was just amazing. Our cabin - we were in cabin 1838 on deck 12, so the newer cabins. I liked this cabin - it was easy to get to, and we liked the fact that there were no rooms above us, no rooms below us and only one room next to us. I also liked the glass balcony - the deck 12 balcony's are the only glass ones on Explorer from what I could see. The room was twice the size of the one I was in on P&O and easily liveable for a longer cruise. The facilities - it was amazing how on a ship of 3,000 people you never seemed to see more than 100 at once. The ship is spacious enough that you don't feel crammed in. The main disappointment I have from the facilities is the Freestyle coke machines. The two in the promenade never worked fully - one was always broken, the other only had plain Coke and Fanta available. There was never any ice. And I really didn't want to have to go up to the Windjammer every time I wanted a refill. Great idea, poor execution. The day spa was excellent, best massage I've had in a long time. Enjoyed the hot tub in the solarium area. The entertainment - the ice show was spectacular. Didn't make it to any of the other shows. I did feel like the entertainment was being put on at bare minimum levels. There were no parades in the promenade, nothing special other than a late night party for St Patrick's day and some shamrock decorations. We did the all access tour and it was great - a lot of walking but really interesting to see so many areas. It went to the galley, I95, engine control room, laundry, incinerator and bridge. The food - loved the food. Only bad food was the room service - wish there were more options for that. I was a bit frustrated when we first got on and every 2 minutes someone was approaching to sell the dining packages for the other restaurants. We'd already booked into Giovanni's through cruise planner and weren't interested in Chops or Izumi. We were just trying to have a nice drink outside the Crown and Kettle and we kept having to fend them off. Overall I was super happy with RCI. Wanted to book another cruise, but unfortunately with husband not enjoying himself I couldn't do it on board as I need someone to go with, I'm not paying so much extra to go on my own. Looks like next up will be a Princess cruise with my parents, but after that I may be able to sway them into an RCI cruise to the South Pacific.
