Gift Cards

I agree with Michelle. OBC or cash is the way to go.

I should point out that the previous thread was about reward certificates not true gift cards per se. They have a lot more limitations than true gift cards, including the type of booking, agency booked with, and the like. I think Discover and some other credit cards offer these "rewards" too.

Traveling with a teen (18 yr old) for first time trying to figure out best way to allow my niece to have freedom to use her sea card with out worrying she is tied to my credit card (going crazy). Giving her the sense of being an adult and not having to ask permission to spend.

Yes, my thread was specific to the RC gift certificates offered by Verizon Wireless as part of their rewards program (eg. pay $90 and some rewards points for a $100 GC).  Those can only be used at the time of booking while making the reservation directly through RC (no agents) using the telephone number listed on the GC.  Since I initiated the request for reimbursement, they have taken the GC off their rewards website (maybe just a coincidence).

I think the "regular" gift certificates sold directly by RC can only be used toward your cruise balance before the sail date... I agree that OBC or cash for your purposes is probably the easiest and best way to go.

Have a great time!

That's an excellent point...rewards and gift certificates are not the same thing.

Here is a link to the Royal Caribbean website information on gift certificates https://www.royalcaribbeancertificates.com/

There do seem to be some rather stringent restrictions on how/when you use them. Apparently they must be redeemed before final payment is made on the cruise BUT the good news is they can be used as onboard credit so that might still be a viable option for you. Making sure she redeems them properly/timely could be a source of frustration for you since you wouldn't have control over that.

Sorry I confused everything and got 2 topics mixed up !

I don't think anybody was necessarily confused.  I just wanted to clarify the point as the reward certificates, while similar to gift cards, have even more restrictions.  I'm actually not much of a fan of the gift cards, either, as they tie your money to the cruise line.  I think a cash deposit would be better.

I have OBC on my upcoming cruise and will likely need to get creative on using it simple because we step onboard with everything prepaid.

I know what you mean, Doc. Having everything prepaid is a double-edged sword if you have OBC to use. Of course, I never have a problem with OBC b/c I use it up in the casino but for those who do not go to the casino sometimes you have to think of ways to try and spend it which is pretty counterproductive when you've gone to all of the trouble of prepaying everything !

More than likely, I'm either going the casino route and lose the 5% or will cancel my Royal Replenish package and just book it onboard.  I bought it earlier primarily for price protection in case Royal decided to raise the price again.
