babs mintz
Do you really save by gambling on slots for points to earn a free cruise from the available list vs. just paying for cruise and price matching for the best deal before cruise? I have friends who swear by the 2400 points for a free cruise from the list vs booking and price matching for the same cruise. what are your findings? do you spend more to win the points needed to get the free booking than you would pay to book the cruise? thanks! Traveler
Well , only if you have luck :-) . All this program build on the calculation that you will loose more than the cost of the "free cruise". In other words , if you ask if it is make sense to play for getting the free cruise , no its not , if you play because its fun and you like it its a different story. And now for some math , you get 1 points for each 5 $ you are playing . To get free balcony room you need to get 4900 points which mean you need to play 4900*5 = 24500$ ... Now lets say the house edge on the machines is 8% (very low I think its much higher) but it means your estimate theoretical lost will be 1960 $ , 1225 $ if its 5% and 2450 if its 10% You are getting a certification that you can or choose to take a cruise or it worse 1000$ for other cruises , so as you can see it makes more sense to pay for the cruise ... For sure you can have a luck and win a big jackpot , but since you are cruising for 7 days , chances are not in your favor. The calculation even worth if you are not getting to the top rewards. WAAAYTOOO
Agree with Traveler. If you are gambling for the sake of getting a "free" cruise, you are making a bad bet. If you are gambling b/c you love to gamble and you're going to gamble anyway, then why not take advantage of the incentive ? We're cruising almost exclusively in comp'ed room these days so it's been a good process for us but we would be gambling whether we got comp'ed rooms or not. You will hear people say that your rewards (certificates) are based on how much you lose but that is NOT true. You earn points based on the size of your wagers and the length of time that you are playing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But the casino knows that, over the long haul, you will lose more than you will win.
