Lwlawlor
Hello all While watching the tragedy in Paris, I cannot help to wonder about the security in and around cruise ships. Since I have not cruised in the last 15 years, I wonder what you have seen, does it ever cross your mind, will you be more careful? Do the cruise lines take security seriously? not jus t passengers, but luggage, personnel? I will not cancel my cruise, ever. Just wanted to know. Thanks Lisa
RoyalLaker
Do the cruise lines take security seriously? not jus t passengers, but luggage, personnel? Yes they do! Everyone and there luggage is screened on embarkation and port days when entering/returning to the ship. will you be more careful? You should always be vigilant. DocLC
You can expect airport-style security. All baggage is screened and passengers go through metal detectors and have their bags screened every time they board the ship. In addition, only passengers and those with proper credentials are allowed into the port area. You'll also see Coast Guard boats escorting the ship in and out of US ports. More importantly, all passenger info is sent to the government prior to sailing and screened which is why same day sales are no longer allowed. Matt
I think it's definitely a fair question to ask in light of the recent events. There's definitely a good amount of security, especially in the US ports. Also, they do respond quite quickly to changes. A good example was when the Ebola threat was elevated earlier this year and within a few days, they started screening for it. Galveston Steve
I think that being on the ship is very safe, and security in and around ports has been heightened since 9/11. All port workers are required to have TWIC cards (Transportation Worker Identification Credential). Getting a TWIC card involves having a background check, fingerprinting, etc. So port workers with access to non-public areas are thoroughly screened. DocLC notes that ships are escorted in and out of port by the Coast Guard. That's what I have observed as well. On Liberty in Galveston we noticed a group of Coast Guardsmen taking a tour of the ship. I believe this was not just a courtesy due to Liberty being new in Galveston, I believe it was to make sure they were familiar with the ship in case they needed to respond to an emergency. Also, the pictures below show the Coast Guard gunboats that escorted us out to the Gulf of Mexico. They patrolled in the Port of Galveston prior to our departure and then escorted us all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Notice in the pictures that the gunboats have a machine gun mounted on the bow with a Coast Guard person manning the gun.
