It is not necessary. A suit is equally acceptable. In addition, you'll find that the formality of formal night has declined dramatically over the years. I, for one, simply wear a tie, whereas others might wear a sports coat over a nice shirt without a tie.

If you opt to dine in the specialty restaurants on formal night, they have a separate dress code of smart casual, which is why some dine there on formal night so that they don't have to dress up.

Hi, can anyone let me know if a Tuxedo is necessary for the MDR for men? Thanks.

Definitely not necessary but there will be a few that wear tuxedos

This is pretty common among the pricier ultra premium lines. Surprised it hasn't happened sooner.

The only line I've sailed on that required a coat on formal night was Holland America; all of the other lines have greatly eased their dress codes.

"Evening chic" -- I wonder what I can get away with wearing on those nights? Oh yeah, it's only a suggestion so I can wear whatever I want! I'll go for the standard, but enjoy leaving the ties at home. Suprised Celebrity was 1st in RCI to change the standard.
