When our family was there, our girls (14 and 15) used water shoes for easy walking.  My wife and I did not use water shoes, just normal slides until we wanted to go on a water slide, then took them off.  As far as I know, they are not "required", just a personal preference.

Do I need water shoes for Coco Cay?

Concur with other answers.  There is a small issue washing the sand off your feet when you leave.  There are showers, but sometimes you pick up a little more sand on the way to the pier, so look for some kiddy water fountains on the way out.

@momneedsavacation, I agree with the above posters BUT if you are like me (I  had a Deluxe Pedicure) the day before my cruise, ouch! I felt smart as my feet were gorgeous but so sensitive. I brought a pair of sketchers water shoes, I like them,  super comfortable never realizing what a great decision it was;  and wore them everywhere. The beautiful island is a tiny bit "shelly" in areas, we spent a lot of time at Chill beach and those water shoes were heaven sent during my Perfect Day, especially while in the ocean. Again my feet were baby butt soft, so that is a definite consideration. Have a great sailing ?
