RichardW
For a Western Caribbean cruise, do I need an actual passport book or will the card suffice
ChessE4
For closed loop cruises departing from the US, you don't need a passport for the cruise itself. But you need a passport to fly home in an emergency. So most veteran cruisers get the passport book as the card's value is more as a 2nd ID rather than as the principal travel document. And you need to be sensitive to the rules of the ports you visit. I have never attempted to cruise without my passport. Ryan79
wordell1
The card will work but you really should get a full passport. One of the keys to successful travel is to prepare for unexpected situations. Your card does not allow you to fly back into the US in any situation where you are stranded in one of the ports. It's not a likely scenario, but it does happen - it happened recently to an entire NCL ship that ran aground. I'm sure that the passport card and license/birth certificate passengers got home, but not without a lot of hassle. ChessE4
