Case in point, Mexico. You don't need pesos for port visits there (but maybe have some for an emergency). Last time we were in Grand Cayman, we used US dollars. Don't know latest, but I doubt your bank would sell Cayman currency. You would want Euros for Europe, but US dollars rule in the Caribbean.
