cjappert
I`ve been reading more and more that they offer specials on dining once on the ship. So is it better to book dining on the ship? or will we get a bigger discount by pre booking one of the dining packages?
DocLC
They MAY offer specials, but the only one I've consistently seen is 20% off on the first night. On one other cruise where we were in port for overnights, they offered 20% off at Chops, but not the other specialty restaurants and on one of the five nights we were in port overnight. Thus, I wouldn't rely on it. The only sure savings is with the dining package.

fonemanbob
The dining package is the only way to go. We have done that on our past 4 cruises and it is by far the only sure way to get the discounts. Initially we were not big fans of specialty dining but once you partake in one you are hooked. Going on Brilliance in 2 weeks and are doing 4 of the 12 nights in specialty dining venues. All part of our 41 years of anniversary celebration. Otherwise it would have been 1 or 2 . It is truly worth every penny spent. And just like the M.D.R. if you are still hungry ask for more. They will oblige. We have never done it but have witnessed it one more than one occasion.
