I've done the drive via the Hutchinson parkway to the Cross County Parkway to the George Washington Bridge down to Newark and then over to Bayonne. If you are going on a weekend, traffic should be at a minimal. Like all driving in the greater tri-state area, leave as early as you can to beat traffic that grows later in the day. Heck, you might consider spending a night at a hotel around Newark Airport if you are genuinely concerned about being at the port in time to pick up your son.
