lmarq
Going on our first cruise ever on SOS this summer. What is the reality on the excursions? When they say strenuous or moderate, how strenuous do they really mean? Thanks in advance!
cedricmr
It depends on the destination. If you visit Rome, a lot of the city is flat. So the effort is not intense. If you go down to La Spezia and you visit Cinque Terre, the effort is sustained because the villages are high up, (there are steps and slopes). What is your cruise ? deButler
Amalfi coast can also be a steep proposition, especially Positano. We were there 2 weeks ago and it was approx. 450 steps up to where we had lunch midway up the town. Beautiful place though and was well worth the effort. ChessE4
We have found on Med cruises (from age 58 to 69) that it's best to alternate an "all day" excursion with a shorter excursion, especially during hot weather. We found last fall very crowded in Italy and France due to the unseasonably good weather around Halloween. This made Cinque Terre and Eze less enjoyable, constantly fighting crowds to find food, restrooms, train seats, etc. As you are going in the summer, plan on taking/buying lots of bottled water. One summer we climbed Mt. Vesuvius during a Naples excursion and it wasn't bad although it is typical volcano hiking (like walking in sand). The bus ride to Rome does allow you to decompress a bit. cedricmr
Cinque Terre, it's 4 000 inhabitants in all for the 5 villages... but 2.5 million tourists every year ! In 2016, Italy wanted to limit to 1.5 million but the project stopped
