Same. Thankfully I couldn't smell it near Cafe Promenade or else i probably wouldn't be able to eat there.

I think I need to pay more attention.....lol.....I don't ever remember smelling smoke on any cruise ship...except right outside the casino...but on another level or down the hall??!..cant say I ever have....

Stinky people...stinky perfume....stinky food for sure but that's about it from my dozen cruises or so.

Except maybe Brilliance..the pub's right next to the casino entrance and if ppl stood right there you could smell it.(pretty sure that was Brilliance) .but I would expect that if someone was smoking about 10 ft away from me no matter where I was..

I have heard that on Harmony the casino seems to be very well vented

Meh. I remember not thinking that. I also don't enjoy being in closed areas with smoke. There was a smoking area on one of the decks, can't remember which one but we went up almost every night for cigars. It was outside so it wasn't bad but sometimes you could smell it near the pool.

I wish there'd be more smoker friendly areas that dont intrude on the nonsmokers.  Like installing better filtration areas in the casino as well as doors so that nonsmokers dont have to be inundated by the smoke cloud.  A cigar bar would be just heaven to me.   Same with the outdoor smoking areas.  I dont want nonsmokers needing to walk through my cloud just to get to where they need to go. But I also dont want smoking to be made so inconvenient for me that I need to crawl inside of the funnel, do a handstand, while carrying the hope diamond just to be able to smoke.  I try, I really REALLY do try to be considerate of the non smokers.  I dont blow my smoke in their direction, I dont hold my cigarette out into their path of travel, and I move my cigarette so a child doesnt see and think that I must be a really cool person and thus smoking must be cool.  But some of the hysterics I've seen from nonsmokers, entering into the small smoker friendly areas is a bit much.  The wild waving of hands, the exaggerated coughing, the need to "inform" me that its a horrible habit, etc.  Hey I get it, its a gross habit.  It'll likely kill me some day.  But until a cruise is made smoke free, we both need to inhabit the same space, lets try to get along.  I'll try not to inconvenience you with my smoke, you try not to go into my dark smoky corner waving hands.

Royal had indoor smoking lounges on some ships, the "Connoisseur's Club". They've been removing them and converting for other uses.

I think they cited "changing attitudes in society" or something to that effect as a factor.

I think, unfortunately for smokers, societal norms are changing and smoking is becoming more and more unacceptable.

I am a former smoker and I am with ThyriC on this one.  I just roll my eyes when I see people running through the casino with their shirts covering their whole face and gesturing wildly, as if that’s going to help.  Find another way to get to where you’re going, for God’s sake !  It may be out of your way, but you CAN get to where you’re going without trapesing through the casino where you KNOW there’s going to be smoke !

No one hates having a smoldering cigarette in their face more than me but if it ever gets THAT bad, I will just quit going in there.  It’s my choice.

In Australia the casinos on rccl are all non smoking, as smoking in Australia is becoming fround apon so hence the restriction.

Also on my recent cruise on ovation they cut the smoking area down on the pool deck from half to a quarter! Standing room only!

However as a non-smoker I don't believe a ship should be smoke-free.

I see it as a freedom issue!

If you want to fill your lungs with that crap so be it!, your choice.

The only suggestion I might have would be to have a nice smokers area "not a dungeon", also away from kids and overzealous non-smokers....jokes ?

Yeah...what bothers me the most are companies and society trampling your rights and freedoms for whatever is the "cause" of the day....whether its smoking or straws......you cant please everyone all of the time....we have to get along...it cant be My way or no way.....as that doesn't work with 6000 ppl on a ship or anywherwe.

I agree....it would be nice if they would have a smoking lounge or bar..it would prob help a lot..but on a ship with 16 decks and the size of a small city.....ONE area next to ONE pool(aren't there like 10 pools?!) for smokers seems like a fair compromise imho.

You can try and contain the smoke, but it's smoke. A separate pool or lounge area seems fair.

I always thought it was funny back in the day when they had "smoking sections" on airplanes, separated by a row of seats. YOU ARE IN A TUBE!

I'm with @monctonguyabout peoples individual rights. I'm a cruise libertarian. You do your thing and I'll do mine, as long as those things do not fringe on the rights of each other.

We do not smoke but do think about this on ships where the Schooner Bar is right next to the casino. Hey, it had to be someplace. We usually go up a deck, walk across, and back down. A tiny bit inconvenient, but that should be our biggest problem in life.  @ThyriC, yours is the best post I've ever seen on this topic. Well said.

I smoked for 17 years and always promised myself I wouldn't be a hypocrite when it came to banning it.  That said, even in the late 90's it was banned in-doors in many places and it's amazing to me that 20 years later that ships still allow it in the casino's.  I guess they may know better, but it seems to me that non-smokers that won't subject themselves to it far outnumber smokers so aren't you possibly LOSING casino business by allowing it more than you are gaining by permitting them to smoke in the casino?  The Empress casino is smoke free and it didn't seem to be hurting the traffic at all, it was busy in there all the time.

The smoking area on the Empress was behind Bolero's and I spent a decent amount of time there, love the aft view, and the smoke was never an issue. You could smell it, but it wasn't difficult to get away from and still enjoy the space/view.   I do like a good cigar on occasion, especially on vacation, but am fine doing it outdoors, in-fact I prefer it.

Why can't RC ventilate the casinos? Instead of the smoke pouring out into the promenade or other public areas, exhaust the smoke outdoors.  It should be easy to do.

If the casinos are going to function as an indoor smoking area, ventilate them as they do all other smoking areas.  All other indoor smoking areas are enclosed and ventilated.

On ships that have a promenade, the smoke goes there because it is right above, with a stairway leading from the middle of the casino to the middle of the promenade.  On ships like the Oasis class, the smoke goes to the adjacent areas, such as the elevators, stairways and entrance to the dining room.

I am not a smoker but think they should have areas for people to smoke.  But those areas should be provided in a way that doesn't force non smoker to breathe the smoke when in public areas of the ships.  RC could do this easily but does not.  Close the doors to the casino and ventilate.  They could even have a ventilation system that allows the doors to stay open but keep the smoke in the casino.  This is an easy engineering fix.  I do not understand why RC doesn't address this.

RC would be my go to cruise line, but I consider others with better designs and smoking policies.

I recently took an RC cruise on an Oasis class ship.  I thought with the new design that the smoking problem would be fixed, but it was not.  Every day when entering or exiting the dining room, we had to breathe the smoke that poured out of the casino.  It entered the surrounding stairways and elevator areas as well.  It was prevalent all the way into the first section of the dining room.

The casino functions as the indoor smoking area on the ship and is wide open to many public areas.  The smoke does not know it is supposed to stay in the casino.  On other cruise lines (Holland American) they do not allow smoking in casinos that are wide open to public areas.  It is only allowed on ships were the casino is separated from public areas.  Princess only allows smoking in the casino on some nights and then only to active players.  On RC it is a 24 hour ever day indoor smoking area that ventilates the smoke to surrounding public areas.

I am planning to take my family on our first time ever cruise to the Caribbean on RCL. I cannot tolerate the smell of cigarette smoke. It ruins my appetite and makes my serotonin levels plummet. Does anyone have suggestions on what ship we should book the cruise? Thanks. ?

At the moment if your sensitivity to smoke is like that you might want to avoid any of the big three including Royal Caribbean as much as it pains me to say that, at least in North America.  Unsure what some other countries are requiring cruise ships to comply to.

Have to agree with @twangster's assessment. On any Royal ship there will be at least a couple of areas where you're going to smell cigarette smoke -- the casino, the possibly the immediate area around the casino or any stairwells leading to it, the designated smoking area on the pool deck, plus any other designated smoking areas on the promenade deck.

Even lines like Celebrity that are known for having a smoke-free casino on all their ships still aren't 100% smoke-free. If you can't be exposed to cigarette smoke at all, your options are going to be fairly limited. I would strongly advise contacting a travel agent who specializes in cruises and ask them to help you find a line that can work with your specific needs.

Sounds terrible...ppl smoke on cruises. Not just Royal...you will smell smoke at some point every day.......May want to consider another vacation. Although anywhere in the Caribbean there are more smokers around then here in North America...so even anywhere in  the Caribbean may be an issue if your that sensitive.

I'm not a smoker, but I never understand all the hate smokers get.

Smokers don't "accidentally" hurt or kill people after smoking (of course we're talking about smoking cigarette, not pot). Drunk people do. A lot.

As long as smokers behave and smoke at the designated area, they posses zero harm at all. But drunk people are walking threats everywhere they go, even for hours after. Yet, the world seems very proud of them and legitimately promoting it as an awesome thing to do. Of course it's all about money. It's how the world works nowadays.

It's unpopular opinion, I know. I just can't wrap my head around it every time I see topic like this.

How badly cruise ship or any place designed their designated smoking area has nothing to do with the smokers. If smokers already followed the guidelines but the smoke still manage to find its way to you, it's NOT their fault. Please be reasonable. Cut smokers some slack, will you?

Some people are truly impacted by cigarette smoke.  I can understand that if it doesn't bother you might not appreciate how it can affect some people.

The problem is exacerbated when smokers don't follow the rules.  Even if the majority do follow the rules, when the minority ignore them it impacts everyone (including those that do follow the rules) and I see that nearly every cruise.

The reality is the choice to smoke cigars and cigarettes does impact other people.  The choice to break rules will cause increased complaints.  No "cutting slack" is warranted or needed.

Unfortunately I'm very allergic to smoke, and most fragrance. But I still don't think 100% smoke free is necessary.

Anything or issue can be exacerbated when people don't follow the rules. Replace smoking with drinking or even just driving in your logic also makes whole lot of sense.

By cutting slack, I meant only to those who follow the rules. They don't deserve all the hate.

At the end of the day, it's never about how safe/dangerous something is, it's just majority rules.

So we get on a non smoking ship so we can travel to far away exotic places without the smell of smoke..what then?

Do we stop people walking in front of us in the streets of these places we visit and ask them to put their cigarette out?

Or if on a beach in the Caribbean do we drag our lounger to another area if the person next to us has sparked up?

If on a tour do we avoid entering a restaurant or bar thats part of the tour because the smoking area is outside the front door and we have to pass through the smoke to enter?

The simple fact is some people smoke, just as some people drink, do drugs or eat to much.

Now personally i would rather have a little bit of smoke in the air than to sit down at a table outside and find someone has been sick all over it because they drank to much and i have just touched it, or my child has then theyve put their hand in their mouth! yet drinking to much is ok, its not frowned upon, no one wants to stop this! despite the fact that if someone was to consume any bodily fluid from another person including vomit they could end up seriously ill or dead.

Btw i agree smoking should be banned from casino,i said that previously on this thread and im a smoker.

We just got back from a 5 night on Empress.  The casino on it is completely non smoking which was nice.

My wife doesnt smoke, i find it more enjoyable being inside in a smoke free environment because she enjoys it more, and if shes happy then im happy....

However she understands that smoking is an addiction just like alcohol, drugs or food, and that it cannot be cured in a day and like all addictions those in need of their daily fix need to be catered for ????????

Yea, I smoke....wife doesn't either.    However like you said I did enjoy the smoke free interior areas like the casino on Empress with her because she's happier.  I don't smoke in our home or in our cars so if I feel the need to smoke I just go outside, same on cruises....just my habit I guess
