?Can The Radiance Of The Seas Get A Flowrider?

Recommended Posts

Rumors are easy and cheap but highly suspect.

Is Voom free on Enchantment?  Nope!  It was rumored to be that way at one time though.

For now no plans have been announced to AMP any ship below the Voyager class.  What happens in 2022 and beyond is not worth guessing or speculating.

Could they put a flowrider on a Radiance class ship?  Possibly.  Something would have to go, maybe the kiddie slide?  They'd have to put a Splash-away Bay area in the pool deck to compensate for that.  That would be tough trying to squeeze more into the main pool deck area.  I don't see it happening but who knows?

i Can’t see it happening. During one of the ship tours we did they said Flow Riders require a lot of power to run. I don’t think there would be any value in adding them to Radiance class ships. As the new ships come online I would imagine they would be looking to sell of the Radiance class ships. I say this because they said they can earn as much revenue on a 7 day Oasis class cruise as Radiance would earn on a 14 day cruise. From an RCI business point of view bigger is better.

Not arguing this point, but at the same time it means Royal has a choice to make:

  1. Keep some smaller ships to serve the Baltic, Scandinavian, Mediterranean / Adriatic, Southern Caribbean, Australia / New Zealand, etc. sailings, where only a smaller (Vision or Radiance class) ship can actually get to the ports
  2. Give up those regions entirely as somewhere that the Royal Caribbean line serves, and restrict them to their higher-end Celebrity and Azamara lines

Personally, I think option 2 would be a huge mistake, and I doubt that Royal really wants to go that route. Hopefully they will continue to maintain the Radiance class ships and further revitalize them from time to time, so they have some itineraries that continue to serve those hugely popular but also big-ticket-price itineraries. Royal is clearly committed to Voyager class and larger, given the current AMPED program; but if I remember rightly, Voyager class is too big for a lot of the ports on the aforementioned popular itineraries. If I'm wrong about that, then wonderful and I'll happily sail to Norway and Iceland (or Athens and Dubrovnik) on Voyager / Explorer / Navigator / Adventure / Mariner.

They sail to Norway (fjords) on Indy and Explorer. They also sail there on Serenade, but the ports in Norway are capable of a bigger ship. Athens could hold a big ship, but the Adriatic Sea ports (Venice, Dubrovnik and Kotor) most likely can’t fit a ship bigger than Rhapsody or Vision.

OK, that's awesome! I don't know how I missed the itineraries with Indy unless I was just looking for the ones that also go to Iceland. Only ship I've seen paying a visit there in the times I've looked for those itineraries is Serenade, and then only during her transatlantic repositioning cruise at the end of the summer season.

Voyager class ships are fine for all Australia and New Zealand ports. The only port that has any issue is Auckland and that is with Ovation because it is too long. They are planning to rectify this in the next 18 months with mooring dolphins.

My comments regarding RCI were for the medium to long term as I think the smaller ship market could be served by Celebrity. In my mind Celebrity ships are more in keeping with a Radiance style ship.

I think there are more options here , The problem of the small ships revenue I believe is only in the Caribbean where you can compare them to the bigger class and therefore the cost is much lower. When you check Europe cruises you can see the prices are much higher and the difference between the big ships and the small ships are not that big  ,most of the times the ships are fully books and average cabin cost for interior cabin is around 1200 - 1300 $ per person.

So  what are the options to keep serving the smaller ports ? :

1. Create a better tendering system  to allow bigger ships arrive to the small ports , it can be more tender ships , more tender embarkation ports , longer hours on port and divide tendering  time.

2.  invest in new smaller ships that can offer more activities , I am sure if someone would been asked to design new smaller ship you will see more of the new attractions even 1 or 2 water slides and some special activities , that way , they will be attractive also in the Caribbean

3.  Find more attractive routes during the winter time - It might be South America or even middle east/north Africa , there is a big market for people (many from the UK and Russia) who are looking for warmer places during the winter (Cyprus for example is packed with people from the UK during many month of the winter) , routes can go to Cyprus, Israel (Jerusalem , Tel Aviv etc ) , South Jordan , Eilat (Israel)  and maybe Egypt,. North Africa , can be Tunis, Marco with some stops in south Spain.

Last Night I Was Thinking About Radiance Class May Be Next  For A Royal Amped And I Think The Pub Near The Casino Can Be Changed To  Playmakers. And Cafe Latitudes Can Be Changed To Starbucks. And They Defiantly Can Do  A Flowrider Single At The Place Of The Kids Water Park. Because The Water Park Is Never Open And  They Can And Some Bucket That Splash Kids At The Pool Deck. And Maybe A Upgrade Mini Golf. And Also An Upgraded Windjammer

Replace the pool tables that don't work anymore and put something there.  The voluminous entry to the Schooner Bar is wasted space and could have something.

Leave the pub.  All ships need a pub.

Radiance Class does a lot of cold weather, small ports and European sailings where a flowrider isn't likely to garner the use it does out of Florida.  It doesn't make sense on them.

Radiance class suffer from a design flaw - the centrum is a choke point and a lot of wasted space in terms of volume.  Originally many had aerial shows but those are gone so the multi-deck open atrium is just wasted space that dumps loud nightly music in multiple cabins anywhere close to the centrum on each deck.

Royal should dump these ships.  Sell them off.  The cost to renovate them into something that can generate more revenue is likely not worth it.  I wouldn't be surprised if they never AMP these ships.

Asking a serious question here, nothing meant behind it but pure curiosity.  Do you actually capitalize the first letter of each word manually when you type, or are you using some type of talk-to-type software?  Just curious.

I don’t see this as a design flaw at all. I actually enjoy the centrum on the smaller ships. We have to remember that not everyone likes the larger ships. Some feel that they are confusing and hard to maneuver. Also, the clientele that certain itineraries attract don’t need a ship with flow riders and bumper cars because the amenities are hardly used. Anything over 8 days tends to have less families who aren’t picking the cruise based on the ships physical amenities but more so the destination.

It was a Captain of a Radiance class ship that pointed out that the Centrum is a choke point.  He prefers Empress for its open areas.  You don't need to be big to feel big.  Empress feels bigger than Radiance when walking around its inside areas yet it's 1/2 the size.

At the end of the day, it comes to one personal opinion and preference.

Or fix the pool tables. Agree about the pub! Radiance is our favorite ship, maybe because we did our Australia/NZ cruise on her.

Well, life goes on. Unless we do 3 cruises next year, which isn't likely, our next RCI will be Adventure next October. Maybe something will come up before then. ? We are only 4 points from Diamond and that is a 13 day cruise.

Some time ago, someone made the astute observation that in the case of some itineraries/ships,  the ports are the destinations.  In other cases, the ships themselves are the destinations.  The comment about personal preferences is spot on, and I fear adding more 'destination' type attractions across the RCL fleet will dilute the personal preference factor.  My wife & I sailed on the Jewel OTS last November on what was a port intensive cruise, and we loved the ship both for what it was, and what it wasn't.  7 of us, including 3 grandchildren ages 3-11 will be on Symphony next August, and all, even the kids, are psych'd for what that that ship has to offer, being a 'destination' ship in and of itself for what it has to offer aboard.  Wife & I will be on Adventure OTS next month, which offers a mid-range between the 2 ship classes, and I believe we'll enjoy Adventure for what it has to offer.  So, my plea to RCL and my fellow cruisers is to keep/advocate as wide a range of on board offerings as possible, from mild to wild, to cater to a wide range of individual preferences.   BTW, Jewel's Centrum was one of the things we loved most about her.  So far, my wife & I agree it's the ship we've loved the most of all we've been on.  If noise is a problem, I should think some cleverly disguised/placed sound absorption panels would reduce that problem.
