Best advice = travelling with 12 year old

We are taking our first cruise on Oasis of the Seas 30th December with our 12 year old son. We have read that the kids facilities are really good on board and have received various suggestions about what to do when we first get on the ship. Is it a kids club that is supervised, i.e do we need to be nearby, will he (should he?) be able to come and go as he pleases and is that wise? Should we get him registered at the earliest opportunity? Not looking to abdicate responsibility but want him to have a certain amount of freedom.

My daughter is 17 so she’s been in the teen club for the last couple years, but if I remember correctly we could sign something to give her permission to come and go if she pleases. My daughter always loved the kids club on cruises and made some great friends. I would suggest signing him up as soon as you can when you get on board, because on the first night of the cruise they do icebreakers in the kids club so they can all get to know each other.

At 12 your son will be in the teen club.  There is freedom in that he can come and go as he pleases.  Not all ships have a registration (Harmony did, Liberty didn't).  It will be in the Cruise Compass is there is one and it was different than Adventure Ocean registration.

The teen club is for 12-17 year olds.  With your sailing being a school break, I am sure they will break the teens into 2 groups: 12-14 and 15-17.  It is very important that he go to the teen club the first night at 8pm.  The first night the teen club will have meet up games and the first night is when they break themselves into little groups.  My teens rarely did the activities in the teen club but would use it to meet their new friends and then leave to hang out.

You may want to consider how to keep in touch with him and a curfew.

We packed Motorola walkie-talkies so I could communicate with my pre-teen on the Enchantment this past January.  Either they were damaged in transit or the signal was blocked on the ship.  Either way, it didn't work.  Thankfully the ship really isn't that big and communication was never an issue.  A few nights my boys just wanted to stay in and watch TV while my husband and I went to a show or the casino.  There are phones on the walls in many public areas and we would just call them every hour or so.
