Embarkation in San Juan Puerto Rico

Hello,

We are taking our first cruise from San juan, we usually leave from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. So we are a little lost.

We are planning to fly in the night before the cruise leaves, any recommendations as for which hotel is closest to the port/dock?

Also which port does Royal leave from, looking online apparently there are 2 different docks and terminals.

Thank you in advance.

RC use the pan american pier not the one in old san juan.

As you are flying in at night dont think it will matter about staying in old san juan, there are 2 hyatt hotels pretty close about 1/2  mile away.

Welcome to the message boards!

The overall area near Old San Juan and New San Juan where the airport is located isn't very big compared to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

Virtually any hotel in the general vicinity that has decent reviews within your budget will suffice for a night.  There are no hotels where you can walk from the hotel to the ship.  Uber can't pick up at the airport but works pretty well around the rest of San Juan.

Ask your hotel if they have late check out or consider dropping your bags at the ship at 10am and then head to Old San Juan to explore the old city.  It's a great city rich in history.  Consider it another port on your itinerary and explore it, don't just board the ship there like you might in South Florida.

I agree with Ray. I am going to San Juan the day before and am staying at the hyatt city center hotel it"s about 15 minutes from the pier.

I looked at that one also but in the end chose the courtyard isla verde as im there for 2 days and my wife wanted a beach

Thank you so much. I was getting mixed info as of where it leaves from.

I wanted a hotel nearby so when its time to head to the port I dont have to worry to much about the distance.

Thanks for the input. We are staying after the cruise comes back for a few days, will give us enough time to enjoy puerto rico and not only san juan ?

We've been there before but through Carnival as one of the ports in the itinerary.

Thanks for the advice ?

The 2 hyatts and the sheraton casino are the closest, about a 15 min walk according to google but thats without luggage or a hangover

Old San Juan and the Sheraton Old San Juan are directly across the street from where the ships dock when San Juan is an itinerary stop, the Pan American pier is where ship dock when they start and end the cruise with San Juan, so this is where Royal docks.

Pan American pier might be walk-able from the old San Juan pier but with luggage I would take a taxi or Uber.

I will be in San Juan in October (Freedom OTS), staying at the Sheraton Old San Juan and I plan on taking a taxi to the Pan American pier the morning of the cruise.

Thanks for the tips.  Were leaving out of San Juan next March on Freedom and we might fly in the day before.  In the past we've flown in the day of, but that makes for a really long day. We've done that twice but we also were in our late 20's, now we are mid 50's! lol

Typically, your hotel will hold your luggage prior to check-in or post check-out while you are out sight seeing.  When we stayed in San Juan our hotel even had a room by the front desk to hold luggage.  They tagged our luggage and gave us claim checks.  It appears to be a common occurrence.
