Royal IQ app, waste of money!

Recommended Posts

Just off a week on the Harmony.  We purchased a Voom package for the week, but other people in our party did not, so we had to get the Royal IQ app to communicate with them all week.  Yes, we had to buy a Voom package AND the Royal IQ app, which is $7.95 per week for the entire stateroom.  The Royal IQ lets you text and call others who also have the app.  Thank goodness it was cheap, because it sucked!  We would get a text hours after it was sent.  Phone calls rarely went through, it would say “unable to connect” all the time.  We finally resorted to putting Post It notes on each other’s doors to say, “ at the Windjammer 7:00am for breakfast”.  Royal Caribbean does not give you paper and a pen in your room, so my advice is to pack one with you!

You don't have to purchase Voom to use the chat/text feature of RoyalIQ, they are mutually exclusive and are purchased independently.

A Voom plan allows internet connectivity.  The chat feature of RoyalIQ is simply that, a chat add-on feature that doesn't use the internet.

If your friends had purchased Voom you wouldn't have had to purchase the chat add on within RoyalIQ, you could have used WhatsApp or any other wifi based chat app.

Having said that, RoyalIQ is eventually being replaced by the new 'Royal' app.

So the app was 795 for the whole stateroom.  If there were two people in the stateroom they could both use the app and text?  Also it looks like you have to buy it on the ship and can’t purchase it ahead of time - how did that work?

We are planning on using it for very basic status updates with our kids.

The app itself along with basic features is free for all to use.  The texting feature costs extra.

If you have IPhones, enterprising individuals have discovered iMessage works with no additional charges at the moment.  Ships using RoyalIQ only.  That is Quantum class and Harmony only, at least that has been reported.

We will be on Adventure, so looks like the iMessage wifi trick won't work.  We are going to try out the communication thing, but I'm still not clear if the price is per person or per stateroom and if we can purchase it ahead of time or if we have to wait until we are on the ship?

Thanks all!
