Matt
Checked my bookings and I see beginning with the 2019 sailings I have booked, the soda package is priced at $9.99 (2018 cruises still have it for $8.50). This was from Mariner of the Seas in March 2019. Not sure if it's fleetwide or which sailings are actually affected. MotleyCruiser

fonemanbob
Heaven forbid that it was put at 1 penny more. $ 9.99 oh that`s not bad. $ 10.00 oh my gosh that`s insane. All in the marketing. I work in the offshore construction industry, and we have several large vessels (saturation diving boats, utility boats, and pipe-lay barges). In today's world, we need to maintain internet access for email, business programs and phones. So, for us to have approximately 1.5MB - not gigs, but megs, costs us around 15,000 per month. Each additional megabyte is around another 5k on top of that per month. Now, our boats will have about 300 personnel for a job (sometimes more). Half are on duty at any one time, working 12 hour shifts. that means we may have, say, 75 people trying to use up that 1.5 megs using facebook, emailing, streaming, etc. It just doesn't work. When you add the phones and critical business systems on that 1.5 megs, the usable internet for the off-duty personnel has about 300K to play with, which means that each person is getting basically no connection. Now, scale this up for a cruise ship. You will have hundreds of people trying to play candy crush, social media, or stream music. In order to allow for this many people to have decent access over a sat connection, it would cost hundreds of thousands per month. The lesson i suppose, is that we should just unplug from the outside world for a week...isn't that what vacation is for? Satellite rates are without doubt, much higher than domestic rates, but they aren't increasing. With increasing satellite providers leveraging low earth orbiting constellations rates are actually coming down. Yet Voom has increased 40% in one year, while other cruise lines using the same provider are rolling out much less expensive internet options. Each of us vacation differently. The purpose of a cruise is not to disconnect from the world. I suppose if someone cruises once every few years they can pursue that option. For someone who cruises once every few weeks or months a cruise isn't about disconnecting from the world, rather living for brief periods of time on a ship. Some people could care less what TV channels are provided on a ship as they don't watch TV. For other's it is important to them. I don't drink soda so the price trends of soda packages are interesting to observe but have no impact to me, much like the price of internet packages have no bearing on some cruisers. With several thousand people on ship you can expect a wide diversity of likes and dislikes. No one way is right or wrong, to each their own. Next week I will be one of over 3 dozen relatives on the Mariner as part of a family reunion. (Some of these second-cousins I haven't seen in 50 years, and some I've never seen!)
