wildgator
Looking for the best excursion to see any of the Mayan ruins when we are at Cozumel or Costa Maya. There are 4 adults and 4 kids (12-16 in age). Thanks in advance.
tiny260
I can't speak for best, but look at Costa Maya, because you are already on the mainland verses Cozumel you have to take a ferry to the mainland and it is still 2+ hour bus ride from there, even though Chichen itza can't be beat. If you don't see anything on Royals Cruise Planner that interest you, look at TripAdvisor.
hayley_bopp
Tulum is supposed to be very good and much closer to Costa Maya than Chichen Itza.
RaleighTrout
Yes, Tulum is closer to Costa Maya than Chichen Itza, but both are a significant distance from Costa Maya. I would guess most people visiting Tulum from a cruise are doing so via a stop in Cozumel, not Costa Maya. From Costa Maya, the choice seems to be Dzibanche, Kohunlich or Chacchoben. My family is probably doing Chacchoben when stopping in Costa Maya in August.
bellemiche
We hired a taxi (Tours Plaza) once when we were in Cozumel and we got to pick where we wanted him to take us. The kids wanted to see some ruins, so we had the driver stop at the San Gervasio Mayan Archaeological Site. It's not as elaborate as Chichen Itza or Tulum, but it was still a good experience. They are located on the island.
fonemanbob
We were in Costa Maya in February and booked the Mayan Experience Tour thru Native Choice tours. You will go to the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins and the you will go to a locals home for an authentic meal that was to die for. We will do it again the next time that we are there. To get to native choice office after the cruise ship docks you have to go outside of the compound and walk down the main road a couple of blocks. Your tour group will have about 12- 14 people in it. The guide who is a local resident was excellent. He was passionate and extremely knowledgeable. It is a 5 1/2 hour tour that is highly rated on trip adviser. It is worth every penny.
