Royal Caribbean Bans Smoking On Balconies

Following a recent surge in smoking bans across many other cruise lines, Royal Caribbean is the latest cruise line to ban smoking from all balconies.

Effective January 1, 2014, Royal Caribbean will ban all smoking on balconies throughout the fleet. Smoking was already banned inside all staterooms, but the new ban will designate Royal Caribbean’s accommodations as completely smoke free. Any guest found violating the new ban on smoking will be fined $250 to cover the deep clean the stateroom would have to undergo.

Smoking onboard Royal Caribbean ships is also banned in all public areas except for Casino Royale. According to Royal Caribbean, “Cigarette, cigar, e-cigarette and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships.â€

Recently, Disney, Cunard, P&O banned smoking on all balconies throughout their fleets. Windstar Cruises banned smoking on certain balconies on the line’s older ships. As of now, Carnival and Norwegian are the only two remaining major cruise lines who haven’t banned smoking from their fleet’s balconies.

Royal Caribbean has stated the change in policy was “made to provide a comfortable cruise for everyone.â€

It's just a shame it's not effective till January which means I could still get peoples cigarette butts and ash coming on to my balcony while im relaxing on the ship next month but at least they are banning it so I shouldn't moan.

Isn't it funny though how RC have have not banned it from the casino where they probably make the most revenue.

I would suspect in the years to come that most areas will become non-smoking. I'm actually surprised that it has taken this long to make most areas smoke free. In the United States most hotels, restaurants, bars, and other public areas have been smoke free for years!

There's still smoking in land casinos so I'm not surprised smoking isn't banned onboard Royal Caribbean's casinos

That is true. In Michigan the corporate owned casino brands in Detroit as well as the tribal owned casinos throughout the state are exempt from the state smoking ban.

DANG! Lots and lots of people in the blog portion about this news item are NOT happy AT ALL about the ban. Wowsers. I really thought smoking was on the way out!

I really feel a vast majority of cruisers are okay with the change, but that's the nature of the blog: It's an open forum for sharing comments.

I think the majority of the cruising public are non-smokers. But when a drastic change takes place you have the few that cause an outcry which makes it seem like there is a larger number of people opposing the issue, when there really isn't.

I have never smoked, and can't imagine being addicted to breathing off something on fire. I don't hate people who smoke, I just don't understand why they do it. It just makes no sense to me.

On my Freedom of the Seas cruise, my wife and I would walk outside on deck 4 all the way around the ship several times a day for exercise. Smoking is allowed on the port side of deck 4. When we were walking on that side, there were always tons of people out there smoking. They all looked completely miserable. It doesn't seem like a fun habit to have, not to mention expensive.

My wife works in public health and says the majority of people who use tobacco fall into certain social economic groups. The whole thing is really interesting.

Agreed, more people will ever complain about something than comment they agree.  Human nature, I suppose.

Let's be honest, if there was a real financial disadvantage to Royal Caribbean for banning smoking, they wouldn't do it.

I hope they do ban it in the on board casinos , the UK banned smoking in land casinos and pubs about 2 years ago, since then the 2 casinos near where i live have seen a significant drop in customers through the door because they cant smoke inside and our local pubs are having the same problem.

This is why i think RC will be slow to ban it from their casinos because gambling and drinking go hand in hand with smoking so if they have looked into stats they are probably concerned they may loose revenue as has happened in the UK.

I fully understand the ban on cigarettes and cigars. I hate the odor and danger also. Can someone explain the e-cig ban on balconies? No fire, no smoke, water vapor evaporates prior to leaving your balcony. This will force me to leave Royal.

You can still smoke in other areas on the ship just not on your balcony. As smoking becomes less and less social acceptable I would expect other lines to completely eliminate smoking from balcony and other indoor areas as well.

When not in port I spend 75% of my time sitting on my balcony vaping and reading. I do not smoke. Forcing me into a smoking area is the same as having a friend of Bill W. meeting with an open bar! I don't want to inhale 2nd hand smoke any more than any other NON SMOKER.

So your e-cig is just a personal vaporizer not a electronic nicotine delivery system? Well I guess if you don't get caught then it would be ok. Your room attendant won't smell any smoke, but if they see it they might report it.

  • 3 weeks later...

On my last cruise, a man was smoking a bit fat cigar on his balcony.  The odor and smoke came into my balcony and ruined my breakfast.  I have to laugh at the sight of smokers on one side of the ship puffing away. All I can think of is when the watch would come across the 1MC and state the smoking lamp was lit.  Yep, good ole Navy days.  But smoking is on the down trend in the US. There are more of us non-smokers who are now being heard and our concerns are being addressed.

Guess I missed out on the chance of being able to sail in the open ocean, enjoying a drink and a smoke on the balcony.

I am late to the cruising game I guess.

It's too bad there wasn't a way to be able to keep a side or section of rooms with balconies for those that do smoke.

I have only been on one cruise so far and have 2 more booked. Seemed to me that there were ALOT of smokers on the boat.

It's one of the things I enjoy about going south, the freedom to walk around with a drink in one hand and a smoke in the other.

And yes, I am a non-smoker outside of my travels.

Grouping smokers together is a way to make everyone happy (the smokers and non-smokers) but the problem is that smoking is becomes less and less socially acceptable. And even though there might seem to be a large number of smokers (normally gathered together in a bar or two) when compared to the entire guest population onboard, there really aren't that many.

Smoking was once a very big part of many peoples lives, but times have changed and many now are super sensitive to the smell of smoke.
