Big Ships too big for britches?

So, as you will see from my signature and what cruises I've been on with Royal, we have yet to go on an Oasis Class ship.  Long story short - we were supposed to go with family this Spring Break out of Cape Canaveral on the Oasis of the Seas but I was laid off late last year and we had to cancel.  :38_worried:

The family came back (all of which have cruised Royal before - but not on the big ships) and they complained about it!  The major complaints were:

  • Our room was taken care of, but we only saw our room attendant once at the beginning of the cruise and never again for the entire cruise (7 days!).  When we needed something, we called him but we always were waking him up?????

  • The ship had too many people.  Unlike other ships where we never stood in line for anything, on this ship we did.  Crowded.

  • My Time Dinning was a CLUSTER!  We always had to wait at least 30 minutes to be seated.  Once night we waited an hour.

  • The food everywhere was bland and not near as good as we've had on other Royal ships.

  • Overall, service was horrible and we felt staff was WAAAAAAY over-extended.

These "complaints" makes me never want to go on one of these big ships now.  Has anyone else had the same experiences??

Thanks!

As a huge Oasis class fan, and also having sailed smaller ships, I have to respectfully disagree.

On all our Oasis class sailings we've always have stateroom attendants that we available. Some were better than others but they have all been friendly in passing and attentive if we needed anything. Keep in mind that they have their break times too and would likely not be available during those hours.

I have never once felt crowded on an Oasis class ship, other than after a show lets out and on first/last day. I find that crowds move through those ships extremely well. I just got off Anthem which has less capacity and everywhere you went it was crowded.

MTD dining is tricky everywhere. People who don't make reservations and just show up will have to wait like a regular land restaurant. In all my experiences with MTD, with reservations, we've had to wait a max of 5 min.

I find the Oasis class ships have even more variety in food than other smaller ships.

Last but not least, I have found Royal's service to be pretty consistent across the fleet. There are some outstanding ones and some not so pleasant ones. But that is daily life too.

Here's the thing....like anything in life, you have to experience it yourself.  Sorry to hear that your family did not have a good time, but that could be a one off time or it could be that bigger ships really aren't to their liking. The thing is that you will never know until you try it out for yourself. I will say this though. Sailing Oasis does require some prior research and planning. It will make the whole experience so much better. And those ships have venues and entertainment like none other.  Wouldn't you want to see for yourself? I am a firm believer that any RC fan should give it a try at least once if possible. ?

Thanks for the info and advice!  Very much appreciated.

Yes, maybe it was just them and their opinions.  I was shocked at everything they had to say badly about it!

Spring Break out of Cape Canaveral on the Oasis of the Seas

Lindsey, could it be the Spring Break thing going on? @Sabrinaklai was also away for that and in her blogs did state the ship was full (she was on Anthem). I personally am not sure I would like the larger ships, but it's just my husband and myself, we are not Foodies at all, like our wine and beer, relax and casino, shows aren't our thing either. Having said that due to @Sabrinaklai chastising me all the time, I probably will book Symphony at one point! LOL  Again, I believe if your family had traveled, say mid January, things probably would have been different. I hope they still book RC though!

Looking at your profile, if you liked Liberty you will like the Oasis class ships, they manage crowds and crowd flow even better than a Freedom class ship.

I agree with @Boston Babe, spring break can be hectic, in the most recent years I have been going on a cruise immediately after school gets out, first to middle of June, for obvious reason the ship is full of kids, they can be trying at times, but last October I went on Allure, far less children and a lot, lot more senior citizens (Very rude people), I was not prepared for this.

The moral to my story is that during the summer time I was prepared for kids, so all of my expectations were meet and i thought it was a great cruise, in October I wasn't prepared for all of the Rude Senior Citizens, so all of my expectations were not meet, don't get me wrong, I still had an awesome time, but towards the end of the week I told my wife to get me away from all the old people. In full disclosure I'm 56 years old, @KLAconQueso was on this same cruise and commented on the something.

Pretty much as everyone has stated, go on an Oasis class and experience it for yourself, just make sure you set you expectations for the ship, date and expected crowd.

Can confirm - witnessed some people who were a special kind of rude.

I loved the Allure, but I'm still a smaller ship person - Radiance class being my favorite and Freedom Class being my husband's.

I'm with your husband on that, love the freedom class. Oasis class is too big for me.

I didn't think about that.  Maybe it was because it's Spring Break.  All of my Royal cruises in the past have been on our Spring Break and it wasn't a problem for me.  I am REALLY looking forward to my upcoming cruise in October with my Mom.  Kids will be in school in Texas so there shouldn't be many on the cruise at all.  I love kids, I have them but still...Mommy needs a break.

But, DO TELL about the rude senior citizens!  I know you've got stories to tell.  I wanna hear!  I think we all do!!!!!!  Spill it.  LOL

Run your foot over with their scooter rude, elevator already has 20 people in it, but still room for me and my walker/scooter rude. Want me to give up my seat in the theater (That I was 15 minutes early for so I could make sure I got a good seat) so they didn't have to walk any further rude, cut in any line because I'm a senior citizen rude.

Like you said about kids, I love senior citizens, I'm one of them (Yes I have my AARP card), but there comes the point in life that you should just be nice and go with the flow, I told my wife that if I acted like some of these people to make sure and slap me, please...

My point was and still is, get your expectations straight/right and you will have fun/good time on any cruise.

OH WOW!  That's crazy.  I hope I don't encounter any of that.  My Mom is 75 and would never act like!!!!

But I am with you on expectations.  I always have a great time on my cruises!  Was baffled at my in-laws complaining about it.

My wife and I were on the Oasis last April and will be on it again next month.  Although bigger isn't better, we loved it and have been looking forward to going out on it again!  I'm sorry your family had a bad experience..... I do know mileage may vary!

  • We had a crown loft, our attendant was top notch.  We saw her a lot in the hall, and she was always friendly and greeted us by name.  I'll assume the staff up there is hand picked, but my folks and sister just returned from an Oasis cruise last month and had great room stewards in their regular balcony cabins.
  • There are definitely a ton of people on that ship, but the sheer size of that ship and amount of things going on in different places helps disperse crowds.  A few times some areas can get a little crowded, but there were choke points even on the Majesty cruise I returned from last weekend.  That certainly isn't a big ship, so there will always be some areas that get congested no matter what ship you are on.
  • I've had bad experiences with "My Time Dining" on every ship I've tried it on.  I feel its a bad system.  I like a set Main Dining time - after the first night, you go right to your table, no waiting, and you get the same servers who get to know what you like.  And of course reservation for Chops & Izumies break up the dining monotony on a long voyage.
  • I totally agree with you -  I've been noticing the quality of the food has been circling the drain for many years and it does disappoint me.  Last year we only went to the Windjammer on the Oasis twice.  I'll be honest, the Coast Kitchen had us spoiled!!  Last weekend's lunch offerings on the Majesty WindJammer was a dumpster fire.  Thank God they had a nice roast beef I was able to fill up on as not much else was edible.
  • All of my interactions with RC staff has been great, my wife and I have been very happy with how we have been treated.  With the exception of the NextCruise guy who repeatedly passed rancid gas the entire time we were helping a friend book a cruise, we have had great experiences.  We treat the RC employees respectfully and its reciprocated.  On the other hand, I've seen some arrogant Pinnacle's showing their rear, snapping their fingers and pounding on the bar - act like a spoiled brat, get treated like one.....

Anyway, hopefully next month's Oasis cruise will be as good (or better) than last years.  :-)

We were on the Oasis this past July.  We were in an ocean view balcony and saw our cabin steward often in the hall.  He always greeted us and we couldn't complain at all.  I have never done the MTD; however, I like the main dinning room because I like to have the same table and wait staff.  I like to have a cup of coffee with dessert and don't like "strong" coffee, so I asked for "half hot water" and "half coffee"!  (I'm weird...). After the first night, I didn't have to even asked, they had it the way I liked it from then on!

We were there in mid-July so there were lots of kids but never seemed too crowded.

All of this, and then also the "stop dead in a crowded area to sit and have a casual conversation so nobody else can pass you" kind of rude. The line cutting made me nuts, as well as people trying to walk on the elevator before anyone else had the opportunity to walk off. It was crazy! It's like half of the passengers checked their manners at the embarkation pier.

I meant to comment on this earlier and got on my Senior Citizen rant, sorry.

I've been cruising since 1995 and I have never had a Cabin Steward ignore our needs unless we specifically told them to, or we had the "do not disturb" sign out for multiple days. One of the best Cabin Stewards I ever had, I never saw except on the first day, he got our schedules down, knew what we liked, what we didn't like and stayed out of sight the whole week, we knew he had been there because the bathroom was cleaned, the bed made or turned down, towel animals etc..

We even had 1 Cabin Steward that defied our "Do not disturb" sign and came in because he was concerned, we had missed a dinner and breakfast (Which we never miss a free meal), so he came in anyway to check on our well fair (We thought we might have actually gotten drugged at a bar on our last stop, but had no proof other than sleeping for almost 24 hours straight).

To my point, I would not be concerned if you don't see you attendant, maybe that is their style.

They are better, but during certain periods during the day, thank about you are just leaving the pool, but everyone else is trying to get to dinner, time of day, the Oasis still might seem slow, but they are really just busy, If I was just going up or down a 2-3 flights I would eventually just take the stairs.

I did the Allure just before Spring Break season started, so the crowd trended a little older, but I agree with some points.

  • Our room attendant was fantastic and we saw her nearby just about every time we went to the room.
  • At times it felt crowded, but the ship's design goes a long way to spreading the crowds out.  My biggest crowd-related complaint is all the chair hogs.  Staff doesn't enforce the unattended chair rule, so you'll see most of the chairs with towels or the in-room magazines thrown on them first thing in the morning but they stay empty till 11.  Also good luck getting an elevator during the dinner rush.
  • MTD was awful on this ship.  Bad service, bad food.  We did specialty dining 4 out of 7 nights, which was fantastic.  Went to the main dining room once for dinner, once for lunch and tried to go once for breakfast but left in frustration.  They really need improvement there.  It's probably better with a scheduled sit down time or not at all.
  • Specialty food was excellent.  MDR was disappointing.  Windjammer was a mixed bag, but overall fine.  The Windjammer seemed to be about the same size as it was on the Majesty, a ship 1/3 the size, so the crowd could be an issue there, especially during breakfast and lunch.
  • Bar service, show access and everything else was fine, no complaints there.

I too noticed rude senior citizens, moreso than I had noticed on previous cruises.  60+ year olds cutting in line and elbowing their way up to the buffet or nudging people with their scooters happened a few times and there were a couple of times I had to loudly announce to someone trying to shove their way into an elevator that we were trying to get OFF on that deck.  That's not Royal's fault, that's just people with bad manners.   Maybe RCI can implement a demerit system where if enough fellow passengers ding you for rudeness, you'll get left at the next port. :15_yum:

In a straight run, they are very fast.  I took a video of the dress sculptures from the glass elevator going up from Deck 5 to Deck 12 and it was about 15 seconds to go 7 decks.

The trouble is during the busy times you're never going to get a straight run.  You'll stop at Deck 11, Deck 10, Deck 09 . . .  I did notice that full elevators don't always stop on decks with people waiting to board, so there may be some weight sensors or fancy logic at work to improve traffic management somewhat.

On Allure they just about always stopped at EVERY FLOOR.

We've started just using the stairs - it's usually faster and helps offset the calorie intake.

I second that!  When sailing Oasis class we always try to book Deck 12 and we always take the stairs to the WJ :12_slight_smile:

I think that the rudeness being talked about is more about arrogance, which is a horrible trait at any age.

I think it is arrogance, but I'm also convinced they think the world owes them a living once you reach a certain age. I can safely say for myself, both my husband and I are "there" not quite yet but we see it all the time in grocery stores etc.  My husband (hoping it's temporary) has mobility issues due to disc and hips. He apologizes all the time to people for holding up the line, or walking through a parking lot. We don't have a handicap sticker for the car, we are thinking of renting a scooter for him on our Grandeur cruise in May, but I can assure you, that's only when he gets tired that he will be using it. Having any handicap does not make it a right to infringe on others who are not and trust me, many play it up to the hilt!

Kindof-but-not-really off topic question.  What ever happened to the elevator testing RCCL was doing?  With the iPads, that you put in what floor you were going to and it assigned you an elevator?

Wow, I hadn't heard of that before.  Sounds complicated !

They abandoned the iPad idea and are instead designating 1 out of every 3 elevators "Express."  On the Express elevators, the elevator buttons have been replaced by card swipes.  They'll cost $1.99 per ride, or you can buy an unlimited package for $10.99 per person per day, plus 18% gratuity.  Suite guests will have access to their very own golden elevator with TV screens that let them watch all the people who have to wait for the regular elevators and laugh at them over the ship's loudspeakers.

I kid . . . I kid . . .

(I actually have no idea what happened to the ipad experiment, but it sounds awful and I hope it fails.)

If I recall it was on one of the Oasis class ships, Harmony maybe, but I have not heard any more about it since the original post.

I didn't know if it would work anyway, I've used a similar system in high rise building before, it works for them because traffic can be somewhat predictable, but on a cruise ship?

The Orlando courthouse has one of these systems.  I hate it.  While it could theoretically work on a cruise ship, the system falls apart if people don't board the elevator the system tells them to board.  As folks have brought up a few times, many of our fellow cruise passengers cannot grasp the concept of waiting for people to get OFF the elevator before trying to shove their way ON.  I think computer designated elevators are a bridge too far.

Any smarts built into the elevators has to be totally automatic and not depend on people following instructions.  I suspect some of that is happening already.  When I was on the Allure, I noticed several elevator cars pass right on by after pressing the button when I was waiting in an elevator lobby.  I think the system can recognize when an elevator is full and only stop at floors passengers were exiting on.  I'm sure smarter people than I could program in fancy logic to squeeze out more efficiency that would account for dinner times, show times, port arrivals, etc.

Some people like the large ships and all that they have to offer, while others don't. If the large ships did the itineraries I wanted, I'd pick them every single time just for the variety that they offer in terms of entertainment, dining options, etc.
