TV in cabin

Hello experts

Only 63 days, 18 hours and 48 minutes until my first cruise (not that I am counting - there is another thread this comment may be more suitable to!)

Question regarding the TV in the cabin - can I connect a HDMI cable to run my ipad or PC through the screen if I am streaming something on Voom?

Thanks

Barrie

It depends on the ship.

On Anthem, a sister ship to Ovation and on Harmony, I couldn't physically access the HDMI ports.  The panel is mounted very close to the wall and there were no side, top or bottom HDMI ports.  I even brought a Samsung remote control from home so I could change inputs but without access to the HDMI ports I couldn't use them.  On some other ships the panel is completely accessible and I could reach the HDMI ports on the back.

I don't think Samsung remotes work on the ships tv. I've never known anyone who got it to work.

They do, at least for some menu functions.  It depends on the ship, different models of flat panels are used with varying sizes.  On Grandeur for example I had full control.  My older Samsung remote I brought from home allowed some menu items on Harmony and I could change inputs but I couldn't reach the ports on Harmony, the panel is flat mounted to the wall, so it was a moot point.

@Bazza We tried to do the same thing on Harmony but like @twangster mentioned, the HDMI port was not accessible.

When we were on Ovation a few weeks ago I wanted to do this but there were no accessible HDMI ports on either of the TVs in our room.

I have been able to do it in the past on the older ships because they had a PS3 in the cabin, I just unplugged the HDMI cable from the PS3 and plugged it into my ipad and it all worked fine.

There's a reason why there are no accessible HDMI ports on the newer ships and that is due too Royal Caribbean got hooked on to the game and they don't want their passengers breaking their tv's. What amazes me is that why would anyone put this "great hack" online knowing that once it is found out, things will change?

I'm a betting man so my solid $10 mil bet would be that no one on this board successfully robbed a bank?? ?? ?? ?? ??

Like with a safe that one guest locks upon departing, changing inputs on TV can possibly cause grief for new guests.

Royal has announced plans to make cabin TV's available for streaming from personal devices.  The details have not been announced but from what was said it suggested it would be Airplay like and available for both Apple and Android.  I imagine new ships may launch with this capability at some point.  Not sure it that includes Symphony or Quantum Plus.  Older ships remain uncertain.

No but a bank has robbed me.  Does that count?

I suppose you could just watch what's on tv. They have a creepy commercial telling people to wash their hands at every opportunity. For me, it is reminiscent of the creepiness of teletubbies. Actually, we watched several films onboard that we hadn't had an opportunity to watch before. And a documentary about Chicago. Come to think of it, on that cruise we didn't have a balcony. We had a promenade view. TV watching will probably go down with a balcony.

Except for realtime TV (i.e., sports, etc.), why would you want to watch TV on a CRUISE??? I enjoy "The Big Bang Theory" in German as much as anyone but, come on!!! (tongue firmly in cheek!)

We were bored and tired late in the cruise, and enjoyed relaxing in our cabin and vedging out on some movies. Sometimes, I like to do nothing when I am so busy doing nothing...

Hmmmm - why not spend the day relaxing on the ship or on shore and come back to the cabin, open the balcony door and relax while watching some tv? Or why get a room with a balcony or even a window? You’re on a CRUISE. See - how that doesn’t make sense? I cruise twice a year - the wife goes to the casino - I go to the cabin and enjoy that as part as every portion of the ship.
