A couple of Allure questions

We are sailing on the Allure on Sunday. I have a couple of questions. First, in the event of an unlikely but dire emergency, where would family call to get a message to us? We will not be purchasing a zoom package as we really want to unplug. Im not talking like "the dog threw up" but like some has passed (heaven forbid).

And second, on a lighter note, I see some good spa specials. Will the price really go up once at sea?

My phone gets turned off and put in the safe as soon as we pass the sea buoy until the morning we return.

Dina,

Before we go on a cruise, I call the customer support folks at Royal and get the actual phone number of the ship on which we will be cruising and give that to our daughter and son in law. That way if an emergency comes up they can contact the ship directly. The customer service folks will explain exactly how it works and the costs.

Our phones also get to enjoy the cruise from inside the cabin safe! The Allure is a great ship, lots to do and enjoy, have a great time. :27_sunglasses:

Who is your carrier? I have Tmobile and can tell you that my phone never gets turned off while at sea just for that reason.  There have been several emergencies with the mother in law while we have been out at sea that we were able to take care of. One was her falling down and not being able to get off the floor but she was able to scoot down the hall and get her cell phone.  The cost to talk was more expensive onboard but it was not God awful expensive and better than the $7.95 per minute I would have paid for a land line. One of the main reasons that I will stick with Tmobile is because almost every port that we go to my cell phone works and it does not cost me another penney because it is included in my plan.  Typically I get a text telling me welcome to xxxxx and that cell service and 3g data are included in my plan.  Like someone else has said if it is that much of an emergency keep your phone on, and only text because it is FAR cheaper than calling.

Even with T-Mobile, we get 2 days of Wi-Fi as D+. We use them for sea days and if you get the voyage package with 2 days left after using your first day, the last 2 are $5.99 total with coupon.  Login, leave your cell phone on but turn roaming data off.  You can text and your phone calls come over Wi-Fi so there is no additional charge.  That's another nice thing about T-Mobile.

If only they would do the same with the ships....

Regarding t Mobile, they now connect to Cellular at Sea, so make sure data roaming is turned off or you will be charged data as it is not covered in any of their plans. 

My father in law tried the phone number to the ship thing in Disney Cruise Line and it failed miserably. He finally texted us and that's the only message we received.

I'm in the same boat (punny?).  I use T-Mobile for their included international coverage and free incoming text on cellular@sea.  As a side bonus I get free wifi on American and Delta flights.

I'm fortunate they have a great network out West where I live.

Thats why I absolutely love them, the wife has a family plan on Verizon with her mother and I was not willing to give up the benefits that I have with Tmobile at a increased price.  And I did not know about the free wifi on the flights! Thank you!  I have a good network here as well, the only real place that Verizon has an advantage here is when you go WAY out in the boondocks but it is getting better.  I have LTE service in almost all  of the places that I frequent and have no complaints.   Thank you for that extra heads up!

The "One Plus" add-on gives you double the speed in the islands and free texting & wifi the whole flight.  Without "One Plus" you get free texting the whole flight and one hour of free wifi in flight.  To use the inflight stuff you need a phone capable of wifi calling and to have made at least one wifi voice call at some point.

OP - the folks in the spa are not like other ship crew, they get none of the automatic cabin gratuity.  Their compensation plans motivates them to sell spa products.  Enjoy your spa treatments but get ready to tune out the sales pitch for other spa products.  Tip them accordingly for spa services enjoyed.

Can I just turn on the airplane mode? Will that do the same thing?

I'm just concerned with sea days as we have Verizon and all of our ports are included in our service.

Yes. Airplane mode disables the data. However, you also won't be able to make or receive calls or texts if that's important to you. There is also a seeing to just prevent data roaming under your cellular options. 

My wife is a recent convert to a smart phone, too, even though I've had one since the first iPhone. She actually uses the camera more than anything and misses her Razor as she could drop that thing without any incident.

They'll be everywhere, but I'd recommend touring the spa and asking about the specials there. You'll also get daily flyers regarding the specials and usually find better specials on port days when there's less demand.

I tried to find one of my old "set sail" pass documents.  I think an emergency number is listed there.  Not sure, but will confirm in 121 days on the Oasis.  Anyone have a current one to check?

Rjac:  What bell bottoms are out of style?  I'll just have to wear my leisure suit.

Ohhh man, hopefully not the full length zip front with the chest hair exposed at the top. That will get your beverage package revoked and a Captain's escort to the front of the line on debarkation...... even if it's not your home port of debarkation.:3_grin:

We own our own business, so going without the phone is not possible; however, hubby was able to still be somewhat phone free as there wasn't any issues that the office couldn't take care of.  I like being able to keep tabs on my Mother also as she is 87 years old and you just never know when an emergency could arise.  I also use my phone as my camera, so I always had it with me most of the time.
