Dinabug38
I've seen that Cuban cigars are available to purchase on other cruise lines. Does anyone know if they are available on the Allure?

He explained that, yeah, they may be Cubans, but how long have they been sitting on a shelf or in a display case. If they aren't in a humidor they could be dried out and taste like crap. Dinabug38
That is good advice! Thanks so much! We know nothing about cigars and it would have been a bummer to bring home poor quality to our friends go do.
tiny260
I agree with rjac and I am a cigar smoker, you have to be very careful, I would seriously consider if what is on the ship is genuine or not. The way I did it and I'm not saying I'm correct, is there is one official cigar distributor for Cuban cigars for the whole Caribbean, I found this by searching through many pages on the Cigar Aficionado blog pages, I cant find my book mark, but I have a note written down for "La Casa Del Habano" stores. I was going to Aruba and Curacao at the time and only wrote down those locations, they have a store in Cozumel as well. The thing is that even though it is legal to bring small amounts of Cuban cigars in to the US now, all of the counterfeit cigars are still out there, be especially careful in St Thomas if you are going there. The other thing is that they shouldn't be expensive, a good Cuban should be no more than a good Dominican now that they are legal to buy and bring back. At one time I thought I had smoked a real Cuban Cohiba, but when I really smoked a true Cuban Cohiba there was no comparison. I know have a favorite, it is a Hoyo De Monterrey, Epicure Especial #2. Good luck. There is one Dominican that I would put up against any Cuban right now, I just had some in Vegas, it is called Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share, it is made by Arturo Fuente, it is the best cigar I have had in my whole life. FManke
I don't smoke, but I'm sure it's like anything else. The best cigars in the world are reportedly from Cuba. But not all the cigars from Cuba are reportedly the best in the world. Make sense?

Yeah, that's kind of like you don't always get what you want and you don't always want what you get or sometimes what's fair isn't always right and what's right isn't always fair and today is yesterday's tomorrow.......better ingredients, better pizza, Poppa Johns! coneyraven and FManke

Lot's of good info here. I am not a big cigar smoker but was hoping to pick up a few for soccer friends while on my cruise this January. These Hoyo's you mention. What should I expect to pay and what are the odds I can buy individual cigars as opposed to whole boxes?

What should I expect to pay and what are the odds I can buy individual cigars as opposed to whole boxes? $16.25, American, each, (In Aruba) and if it is a reputable shop they will have singles and you won't have to buy the whole box. And they should be in a walk in Humidor. Warning, if you see guys walking around trying to sell an assortment, Hoyo's, H. Upman, Cohiba, Bolivia's etc. in a small wood case (Will be like 4-5 cigars in each case), they are fake, they will start out at like $50, and by the time you walk away they are down to $10, pricing for real Cubans are not negotiable, the distributor sets the price and it is the same distributor for the whole Caribbean, so why set different pricing. If you want to smoke one on ship (Oasis class), you only have 2-3 places to smoke, the Connoisseur Club, and up on one of the pool decks, can't remember which one, you'll know it because all of the smokers hang out there, and the Casino, but I'm thinking RCI may have banned cigars in the Casino, I usually only have one cigar a day and it is late in the evening after dinner and the show, I will go up on deck and smoke one. Apologies to all of you none smokers, usually cigars are frowned on more that cigarettes.
jce2
Great answers, thanks! That sounds like an excellent price. I found what I hope are reputable stores in both Cozumel and Grand Caymans that are somewhat close to the terminal. Will definitely look for Hoyos. jce2
It appears the store "la casa del habano" in Cozumel is located right on the corner of the main plaza. Perfect!
tiny260
The one in Cozumel I went to was in downtown Cozumel, on the second floor of a restaurant, it was right on the corner of the big Plaza downtown, there is also a restaurant/Bar downstairs that they try and get you to sit at but if you tell them cigars/Humidor/ "La Casa Del Habano" , and point upstairs, they will show you the way, big walk in Humidor. I'm traveling to Cozumel in October, staying at a resort, and plan on going downtown to visit and restock my Humidor.

I for one can tolerate cigars, and pipes, much more than cigarettes. Cigars seem to have "flavor", whereas cigarettes just seem stale. jce2
One more question: Once placed in a humidor, how long will a cigar stay in good shape? I would be buying my cigars in early April but we dont normally have a home game until early April (USL is afraid to schedule soccer in Colorado in March (wimps!)) tiny260
If the humidity and temperature is correct in the humidor they will stay good for months.
