We're in the process of trying to book airfare and are trying to figure out what time would work for a flight on disembarkation day. We're currently looking at a 12:15 flight from Barcelona to New York (JFK). Would we have enough time to make this? If so, what is the easiest way to get to the airport from the dock? Would cab be best, or are there shuttle services? Thanks in advance! Not new to cruising by any means, but this will be my first international cruise, so I wanted to be fully informed! If you want extra time, walk off with your luggage. Many times we were at our downtown Barcelona hotel at 9 am post cruise. What’s the hurry to get back to the states? I'd love to spend some extra time, but this is all my fiance and I were able to get off from work. We're flying in a day early, so hopefully we can see some of the city then. The boat arrives early in Barcelona and usually from 6.30/7.00 it is possible to get off. BUT once there was another boat that broke down in the harbour and we were late. That’s exceptional. For international departures from BCN El Prat, you must arrive at least 3h before. So there must be no problem for a flight at 12:30. The simplest thing is not to use the luggage service. You keep the luggage and you go out alone. The ideal is to take a direct taxi to the airport which is south of Barcelona... as the port (30/40€ in 25/30mn, at that time, no traffic). Even if OP has visited Barcelona before, there are so many nice places to spend a couple of days within a (relatively) short distance of Barcelona. Madrid is a criminally underrated city, and in my opinion is more enjoyable to visit than Barcelona (especially when paired with Toledo and/or El Escorial). Hiking in the various national parks near the French border is truly magnificent and peaceful, especially after spending time with thousands of "friends" on the ship. Valencia is a great mix of city, water, modern Spain, and old Spain (like Barcelona, but slightly smaller and quieter). Curveball for the small country of Andorra, just a couple of hours drive from Barcelona, for being an amazingly beautiful place that most Americans haven't heard of, let alone visited. Traveler Posted May 30, 2023 Report Share Posted May 30, 2023 Did this itinerary mant times , always the bought arrived around 5 am and cleared around 6. Travel time to airport is less than 20 minutes and it's Sunday so no traffic. Pattycruise Posted May 31, 2023 Report Share Posted May 31, 2023 My TA to Barcelona must have been the unusual one. Exiting the ship to be processed by immigration? Was awful. It took almost an hour, I think the 4 people processing our half of the ship needed coffee. the airport was also a nightmare, despite doing checkin on the app the lines for Delta “ checkin already” line was painfully slow. Their very long line of people who needed to check in was processed quickly. Then was security and another line for ?(passport control I think) Don’t be fooled and think once you’ve passed security you have time to shop in their gorgeous shopping plaza, you still have that other line to do. (Passport control?) Be prepared to stand, a lot. By the time I finished all the lines I had less than a hour for my 11:15 flight. If I had to do it again I would not have taken the Royal shuttle as I felt the wait on that bus for other passengers going through the long disembarking line slowed the bus leaving the port. Linda R Posted May 31, 2023 Report Share Posted May 31, 2023 Should not be a problem. The airport is not that far away. They say on international flights to arrive 3 hours early. We always walk off with our luggage, just in case. Taxi is usually what we do. But can also book a transfer in advance. The cruise ship may also offer transfers. She Sails Away Posted May 31, 2023 Report Share Posted May 31, 2023 Just got off symphony in Barcelona last week on a Sunday, taxis were waiting and I made it to the airport in under 40 minutes, from the time I left the cabin to the time I walked into the airport. Check-in was fairly quick and I was at my gate within 30 minutes. I had an 1130 flight and even with stopping to buy snacks, I was at my gate by 915. Obviously, I did self-assessed luggage and just walked off the ship as soon as possible, which was about 730. on a sidenote, a baggage handler strike started that day, I believe. Levi is good Posted June 1, 2023 Report Share Posted June 1, 2023 I was kind of embarrasingly surprised how early they wanted us off the ship this past Sunday (it's been a while, I'd forgotten ) and how awfully long it took in the cab line for one that could take the four of us to the BCN airport. But we had a 1:20 flight and it wasn't as comfortably early as I'd hoped. The Key helped us disembark, but we lingered onboard first until probably 8:30, 8:45 thinking we had all this time. We're cruising out of Barcelona in July and we're in the same boat. Our flight home is at 1:00 pm however one thing I might suggest is looking into The Key. We had it last time we cruised out of Miami and I have to say, that was the smoothest departure off a ship we'd ever experienced and our luggage was waiting in the Key section so we didn't have to spend time looking through multiple rows trying to find our bags. There were also porters waiting right next to the Key section so we grabbed one for our luggage and in total I think we were on our way to the airport within minutes after we passed through the facial recognition check point. We've got the Key for our trip to Barcelona...
