Lanyard or not?

I always use the lanyard.   I like not having to have my purse or wallet with me all the time and the lanyard keeps me from losing the card on the table or pool bag all the time.   Mine had the bottom detach so it was easy to hand to the bartender.   It is totally personal preference though,  and you will figure that out pretty quick.   Jane

Absolutely loved having a lanyard ..... my wife and I found that having them really made life so much easier, especially when going off the ship and you needed to have a place to put a 2nd ID to get back on (like a Driver's License) --- Even though I had my wallet with me, her, not having to bring her purse, really made life so much easier for her.  Now she wants to get one that's a little "fancier" instead of having a cheap plastic one off of eBay :8_laughing:

I got some for us to use for our July cruise.  I don't want to keep up with a purse.  I got the plastic sleeve ones that have a zip type closure on them so it will be easy to add ID and a little money even when we get off ship.  This will be the first time for us to use these; however, this is the first time taking the grands with us so I think that will be less stress for Nana!

When I used to cruise with Disney a long, long time ago, lanyards were big and I remember buying some to bring on my first RC cruise and it seems like that is not the case with RC.  There are certainly some people that wear them, but it's not widespread.

I just keep my family's SeaPass cards in my pocket (unless we are on a ship with WOWbands).

Im assuming these lanyards are not the same as the luggage tag sleeves I've seen posted elsewhere. Can someone post a link to show what they are / where to get them?

You can buy them online, but they are also sold onboard the ship.

But Matt, I didn't see any in your store or did I miss them?

We used a lanyard for the first time our last cruise. We liked it for the most part, however there are a few of things to be aware of.

  1. If you punch a hold in your card, make sure it's a wide hole, rather than a round hole
    • They punched our round hold too close to the mag-strip and the card wouldn't go far enough into the mag-stripe reader to read the cards without removing the clasp completely from the card.  A wider hole would allow the clasp to move more.  I have attached 2 images: one showing the "wide" hole I'm talking about, and one showing a round hole that I'm recommending against.
  2. The sunscreen on your hands and/or chest/stomach while it's hanging on your neck can dissolve the printed letters on the card.  We had to get a new card halfway through the voyage because all the lettering was gone.
    • Using a pouch type lanyard will help avoid this, except that you have to remove it from the pouch every time you need to use it.
  3. I would recommend the type of lanyard where you can detach the bottom portion from the "necklace" portion.
    • This will allow you to quickly detach your card to hand to a server or bartender if you have your card hanging on your neck or slip-loop secured to your pool bag's strap. I have attached an image showing one kind of "detachable" lanyard.

You can buy lanyards for your seapass card from almost anywhere (Walmart, Amazon, etc).  However, there is always a little shop set up inside the terminal that sells them.  They usually have a hundred or so different styles.

No pros or cons from me, just never have because its not my thing.

I know what you mean. I kind of equate it to a fanny pack. If you use one, that's fine.  Just not sure if it's for me. I was thinking about just getting one and then just running it through a belt loop and keeping it in my pocket to avoid loosing my ids. But then if I have it in my pocket, why do I need a lanyard. I don't keep my keys on a lanyard and have never lost them. And since we will be cruising this Oct, I'll be wearing pants everyday, as opposed to shorts or trunks in a warmer climate, so I think I'll be ok.

Those luggage tags look nice.  Are the ones sent by Royal flimsy?

Many women's clothes don't have pockets so I use a lanyard.  I don't like the idea of giving it to my DH to carry because he may run off to do something with the kids and forget to give it back to me while I'm at the pool.  My kids use the AO lanyards and I usually have the AO staff punch a hole in mine at the same time.

I have used a lanyard for every cruise because I very seldom carry a handbag. A friend designed my lanyard. It is covered in beads made with sturdy cord and not heavy at all. People on board comment on it all the time and want to know where I got it.

The ship lanyards are about $9.99 and flimsy. If you want a special one go to Etsy for hand made lanyards.

Since fmanke found the new drink package/MDR attire/gratutity topic in terms of popularity, I must add to the equation with the lanyard from the recent group cruise onto which I pinned a flag of every port I visited since I began sailing RC...I'm debating adding pins from some short European sailings years ago...but my wife insists that I don't because she doesn't want full certification of my geekdom.

Mexico will be added in 49 days...

I only use the "lanyard" from the casino.  I don't wear it around my neck.  I attach it to a belt loop, a button hole, or to my mini purse.  I like to wear jewelry and lanyards aren't that to me.

The only reason I have one is because I like to go to the casino and have left my S&S card in a slot machine.

I always use a lanyard.  On one cruse we sat down for lunch before we went to our cabins.  I hadn't put my sea pass in my lanyard yet. My sea pass fell out of my pocket at lunch and I didn't notice until we were going to get into our cabin.  Needless to say a trip to customer service for a new one certainly made me realize I am a lanyard person!  I get the one with bling for fun.

I actually received one as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago. :)

Add it to the wedding registry.  That should get all of your guests talking. ;)

I think that will just be going on our carry on for embarkation day on Allure...
