Royal Caribbean's Naming Convention

Recommended Posts

So, what's in a name?

Each of the classes of ships have names that...well..."go together" for the most part... or do they?

Freedom class.... Freedom, Independence, and Liberty... all synonyms for, well...Freedom.

Voyager class... Voyager, Navigator, Mariner, Adventure, and Explorer... all synonyms for people who venture out and explore stuff...

Then the lines start to blur a little bit...

Radiance class... Radiance, Jewel, Brilliance, and Serenade...  Radiance/Jewel/Brilliance sound "shimmery", and Serenade is just kind of an odd-ball one that's just tacked on on the end...

Vision class... Vision, Enchantment, Grandeur...to me, in my mind I think "big looking" - but then we can't forget Rhapsody, which is a style of a musical piece..

Then the lines blur even more...

Oasis class.... Oasis, Allure, Harmony, and now Symphony... Oasis and Allure really don't have much of anything to do with each other... but Harmony and Symphony are both "musical" in nature... so in theory, the next Oasis class ship... might it going to be something else entirely, or some other word from the musical milieu?

Quantum Class... I have no idea. Quantum, Anthem, and Ovation.... Anthem is a musical style, Ovation is when you're standing up and applauding at the end of something you're amazed at, and Quantum... is..kind of "sciencey"

So... what do you all think about Royal Caribbean's naming strategy... it seems like there maybe, at one time, was a rhyme or reason to it... are they abandoning said rhyme or reason? Should there be one? I like the consistency with naming within the class, certainly helps me remember the names of the ships.

I can see reasons to want to have all the ships in a class to have similar sounding names, but sometimes you just gotta have a cool name to spark interest. Rumors are Passion and Pulse are the next two Quantum class ships. https://www.schiffe-und-kreuzfahrten.de/royal-caribbean/passion-of-the-seas-und-pulse-of-the-seas-quantum-4-5-sollen-lng-antrieb-bekommen/121843//

Valhalla would be an excellent name for Oasis V. http://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/2017/01/27/royal-caribbean-trademarks-three-cruise-ship-names-possibly-be-used-new-ships

"Passion of the Seas" and "Pulse of the Seas" will be the next 2 Quantum (Actually, Quantum-Plus) Class ship names.

RCCL also holds rights to "Vantage of the Seas"

A rhapsody isn't just a type of musical composition. The word "rhapsody", per Merriam-Webster, also means "A highly emotional utterance" an "effusively extravagant discourse", with a sentence example of "The major launched into a long rhapsody about his plans for the city." Clearly in that example, it's a synonym for the mayor's vision of where the city is going, which (albeit as a stretch) does let the name fit with the rest of the Vision class ships.

I have absolutely no idea what the talking heads at RCI were smoking when they came up with the other names for the Oasis class ships. Plenty of synonyms for "Oasis" they could have used. Haven, hideaway, refuge, resort would all work fine (thanks, thesaurus.com!). That said, I'm guessing asylum, hole, and safe house wouldn't have made the cut. ;)

Very Interesting post, ironically the new Oasis-class, announced 5 April 2022, 'Utopia Of The Seas'. I've sailed on Ovation OTS, and after the Quantum-class came out, Igotvto think, after 'Icon-class' was announced, and I emailed RCCL, with suggestions, 'Constellation-class' and 'Galaxy-class'. Constellation-class would supersede Oasis-class, and 'Galaxy-class' would supersede Quantum-class, behind 'Icon-class'. 'Constellation Of The Seas' and 'Galaxy Of The Seas', in Constellation-class could be 'Comet Of The Seas', 'Universe Of The Seas'.

We're building sea monsters, as ship aficionado, it's going to be interesting to see how big they will gets, and we can no longer compare new ships to Titanic.

History nerd here, but this reminds me that even back in the 1910's the White Star line had a naming theme. They had the "Olympic" class ships, which were the Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic. All the names were meant to reference how big the ships where (Britannic being a very British-centric "we are the rulers of the world, look how big our kingdom is" name) plus it all ended with the same letters/sound. Think of it as the original "of the Seas" ending. Rumor was that Britannic was originally going to be called the "Gigantic."

His "Serenade" was awe inspiring, she was so smitten by his "Brilliance" she seemed to be so happy it almost looked like she emitted a Radiance like a shinny "Jewel."

Vision class... Vision, Enchantment, Grandeur...to me, in my mind I think "big looking" - but then we can't forget Rhapsody, which is a style of a musical piece..

The castle's "Grandeur" was a "Vision" to behold.  The children were Enchanted by it, almost to the point of "Rhapsody".

The "Allure" of the of the "Oasis" was enough to create a "Symphony" of "Harmony".  No "Wonder" all were happy.

Quantum Class... I have no idea, Anthem, and Ovation.... Anthem is a musical style, Ovation is when you're standing up and applauding at the end of something you're amazed at, and Quantum... is..kind of "sciencey"

The "Quantum" and "Spectrum" of color of the precious metals created the gathered crowd to break out in the country's "Anthem" and it created a standing "Ovation.  However, the display was short lived and the "Odyssey" had to continue.

So... what do you all think about Royal Caribbean's naming strategy... it seems like there maybe, at one time, was a rhyme or reason to it... are they abandoning said rhyme or reason? Okay, a bunch of B.S., I know.  But, it was fun.  Thanks

I think it was easier to name ships two hundred years ago.  There could be 50 ships around the world with the same name and no one ever knew.

At some point lawyers and lawsuits entered the picture so they started to avoid certain names that might infringe on another company's rights, at sea or on land, around the world.

Enter marketing where certain names in some region of the world have a negative associations, i.e. the Chevy Vega syndrome.

100 years from now the lawyers will have completely ruined it.

Expect "19282651 of the Seas" because any other name will result in a 1,000 lawsuits all claiming some frivolous infringement.  "I am a musician and I used the word Melody in a song, therefore that cruise line owes me $1M".  "I own an animal wash company in Siberia by the name Utopia and my family has been washing Bison for 1,000 years, give me $10M for stealing my company name".
