sail away party? Please define.

When we embark on Day One, there is music and dancing pretty much everywhere.  We grab a drink and find a spot to watch the ship pull away.  With all the dancing, music, happy people absolutely everywhere....WHERE and WHAT is this "sail away party" so often referred to???  Is this a don't-miss event in a particular place, that we've managed to miss every cruise?  Or is it a general "feeling" that we are taking part in just by being out and about on the ship as she sails into the ocean?   I feel like if there is an Official Sail Away Party I should find it and attend at least once!

Sail away-informal, someone in the roll call groups here, Facebook group for your sailing, or maybe even cruise critic (I don’t follow that board) creates an event whereby people get together to know each other and it usually encompasses sail away time, therefore it’s typically at an outdoor bar.

sail away “formal” -is a time set by the staff, it’s listed in the app or cruise compass. Typically it has a DJ with dancing and is by the outdoor pool ….it’s a “crowd” event for the most part, more of a party feel.

Before COVID, all of the cruises had a DJ or Band around the pool with a lot of ship staff.  They would try to get everyone up and dancing and sell you a sail-away drink.  It was a big party to make leaving port exciting and sell drinks.

Now Post COVID they just have music everywhere and try not to have big crowds.

Social Media Groups:  Like @Pattycruise said the social media groups get together to meet each other and enjoy the ships departure.  On my September 4th cruise I have over 500 new friends from the Facebook Cruise Group for our cruise to meet.

The party with band/DJ was going strong on Oasis on June 24.  I was doing a time lapse of the smokestacks rising after we crossed under the Verrazano bridge but you can see  the crowds in the background on the deck below.  They also did a conga line around the pools.
