steverk
I've been on many cruises, but never seen one depart before the sail away party or escorted by the coast guard until today. Is this a new thing or have I just been lucky enough to not experience this?
PRMLVM
on our every departure, we play "who spots them first?" looking for the escort boats (with guns) who we've always thought was the Coast Guard....
teddy
On our last cruise out of Miami, a whole crowd of people up on deck were making siren noises at the escort boat until they put the lights and siren on. it was quite comical. Gadget Hackwrench
I know that US based nuclear submarines do patrol the waters to watch over the cruise ship routes, so perhaps your escort was closer than you thought. Post 9/11, I got to do Sea Marshalling duties ON BOARD a few cruise ships out of Philadelphia, including Empress of the Seas. Now that was sweet duty! twangster
It might depend on the port if you see them more or not, but escorts, both USCG and often by local Sheriff boats is very common.
BrianB
Sailing out of Port Liberty, we usually have coast guard or New York City Police boats nearby. Several times a NYPD helicopter does a low hover alongside the ship as we sail out. Once in a while a New York City Fireboat will put on a display with their water cannons. Even the New Jersey State Police marine unit may be nearby. But, New York harbor is always busy and well protected. There is plenty of boat, barge, tug, container/cargo ship, ferry, personal craft and sailboat activity. It’s a great port to sail from. Going under the Verrazano Bridge is a major highlight. Plumlee2028
Last time I sailed out of Miami, we had to turn in the basin before leaving, and the sheriffs/police boats escorted to clear the various boats away from the turning basin. twangster
Sometimes while in a Mexican port you'll see a similar law enforcement presence in watercraft. That freaks out some people, not sure why, when it's normal in a US homeport.
jeffmw
As far as the Sail Away Party, you have to remember that's a social event, and that the port operates on a different schedule. The boat leaves when the port and crew say it's time for it to leave, which can be affected by a number of factors. They don't get to choose exactly when they leave. Think of it a bit like a plane leaving the gate. There are a lot of variables at play. So while the Sail Away Party is certainly scheduled to take place near the time of departure, they can't always make them perfectly coincide with one another.
