Question for Duck hiders and hunters

Recommended Posts

I understand there is the Facebook group for cruising ducks which is very good, the only problem I have with it is that there are so many posts that it can get lost in all the posts and you might miss someone finding your duck or not seeing you find their duck. What are your thoughts on a cruise ship duck website where each duck is assigned by the website a duck number and the ducks can be tracked and logged when found and rehidden. Each duck on the website will have a photo (both when hidden and found, the hider(s) or finder(s), the cruise line, cruise ship, duck origins, hint on hide or reside, special note on duck or cruise or cruisers, and the date. It can be searched by cruise ship, cruise line, or duck ID number.

Would a website like this be helpful ( hopefully because it is almost completely built)? Thank you for your feedback.

I am not on Facebook or any social media sites.  I’m actually surprised that I log onto this site as often as I do.  When I find a duck I rehide it because I can’t post anywhere that I found one.  Maybe next time I will go to the roll call here and upload a picture of whatever I find.

Ducks are given only for fun, with no strings attached. Being a Facebook member is not a requirement to do whatever you want when finding a cruising duck.  We have distributed two hundred ducks so far, and maybe have seen 10 posts from folks finding our ducks.  But it doesn't matter.  We love it when a toddler or other youngster finds a duck, and it's unlikely they are on Facebook.😍

I would enjoy using this site once it is built !   Please post your URL.  I would be happy to join this site.

I found a duck on Harmony in March but, because I don’t participate in FB and couldn’t post my find there, I put it back for someone else to find.

I don't do Facebook either.  However, I think this duck hiding thing is a good thing for those that like doing it.  Good luck all you duck hunters.

I love duck hunting. If I find more then one I go ahead and hide the other. I am not on Facebook so I post here and on Instagram. For the first time I am hiding them, on the Harmony 31 July! If you find it please post it on the sailings roll call! Here she is!

I'll be on Harmony in Jan 2024, while I don't participate in the Duck Hunting I like to hide something I purchase while in a Port of Call and leave it somewhere on the ship, then give a clue for someone to find it on the next cruise after ours.  I'm going to make that MY custom on every cruise I take.

I love cruising!  I love making it interesting for not just my party but for others as well.  I think you and those like you are doing a great job of that, too.

The most interesting part of this thread (for me) is realizing that I am not the only person on the planet who does not have a FB account !  I’m delighted to find so many people who do not do FB !

I don't do Twitter, either.  Other that this forum, I only do one other.  I used to be a full timer on Facebook about 2 or 3 years ago.  No more.

Nor am I.  I only know of the facebook Cruising Duck posts thru my wife.

The only social media platform I use is LinkedIn for professional purposes. I am a member of these forums and two others.

We have never found a duck on a cruise ship but did find a rubber narwhal on Ovation last month. It had no identification attached but the location where it was found showed that it was clearly "hidden" there to be found.

Well, I may have over done it! I just finished my 30th duck for our 30th anniversary cruise. 30, wow I was having so much fun where will I hide them all? I was going to leave in the cabin also, do I tell my steward & ask him/her to leave for the next guests? Should I place it in the room safe? The icebox? Dear fellow bloggers, where else can I hide 30 ducks? It's the Harmony & Central Park is always crawling with ducks as well as the boardwalk area, any and all suggestions appreciated. I know no stores & pools, I really want to hide them all for a fun surprise!  HELP??

Good luck.  I can only think of the various potted plants and picture frames.

Well Covid craze is almost over but I’ll share a thought on leaving one in the cabin  for the next cruiser.I found one on my balcony.  So my first thoughts were did someone leave it behind? Did no one clean the balcony?  Or did the neighbor push it through under the divider?

During these Covid times typically the rooms are cleaned and sanitized between cruisers, but on my dozen cruises since the return I’ve been in 2 cabins that clearly were not, and noticed the sign “this room had been cleaned/sanitized” was not on the door.
I think if that sign was on my door and I found a duck in my safe, drawer or other location I’d question the thoroughness of the cleaning staff.

Maybe some of us can ask our room attendants if they know of the ducks, if they realize it's a thing. Maybeeeeee they leave on purpose?

Of course.  I’ve been sailing a number of years and never heard of this until this year.  On most every sailing I’ve been on 1/2 of the passengers are new to cruising (assumption based on having no crown and anchor number, perhaps they’ve sailed on another line) so it’s not likely they’ve heard of this. I learned of this via the FB sailing for a ship I was on or I’d still be in the dark,  most FB sailing groups I belong to have around 500 members so it does represent a decent # of families.  I’m sure awareness will become more widespread.

I would think the same thing tho, and wonder if the room was cleaned if I found ducks in obvious places. 🤣

If nobody keeps these ducks, then eventually there will be so many, housekeeping will be throwing them away.🙂

Please-please-please... Keep them if you want, especially for the kids!  There is absolutely no requirement to be a facebook member.  That's just a cute little aside to see where some of them might have been found, or where they went.

Wife and I were just on Oasis of the Seas. I'd read about cruising ducks a couple of months ago and was like "Hey, when I'm on the cruise, I'll look around for some." Then I totally forgot about it. I saw one on top of one of the elevators (the frame above it, obviously) and said "Oh, I'd forgotten about those. I found a duck!" I realize we're not the "target audience" for these, but we looked around the ship (in between trips to the bar and casino, of course) and managed to find 5 total. We're going on Mariner of the Seas to celebrate my 50th birthday and we're bringing 50 of them with us to hide there. It's fun and people seem to like it.

Here's our haul (my personal favorite is the giraffe).

My wife went out around 530 am on Voyager last week to hide some ducks and talked to a couple crew members who like finding them early in the morning, then assisting young kids who are looking for ducks later on in the day.  One of them told my wife that it was neat to read the tags and see where guests were coming from.

If we find a duck we usually take it home with us and then we hide it on our next cruise with the original tag. We try to add our name to the back of the tag as sort of a "Duck Passport" in hopes to see just how far and where a duck might end up from its original sailing port. We are o.k. with someone keeping the ones we hide but we get a kick out of those that send us a Pic to our cruising duck email address with where they found the duck and where they sent it off to next!

I never thought of it in that way.  Number of passengers onboard, 4600.  Number of Ducks onboard, 5100.

Where can you get the name tags to fill in? Would love to take part. Thank you.

You can get the on Amazon,  but we just print our own, don't want to hand write them.  We hid about 50 ducks on our last cruise, and have the same for our next.

When we were on our Allure cruise last year, our friends brought a carryon full of ducks!  They did not put tags on them and every time they left their room they would bring a stash of ducks with them.  When they saw little kiddos…they would hide one close by and then tell the child that they heard there was a duck nearby hoping to be found.  Each and every find was magical!  Oh, and they did make sure it was ok with the parent or guardian before doing this….after all talking to strangers is a NoNo!   We loved seeing the expressions on their faces!

We are going on a family cruise this summer so I have 2 projects for my grandkids beforehand.  One is make signs with magnets for all of our doors using craft items.  Two is tying labels onto the ducks I purchased and while cruising…hiding them!

When we were on Wonder a couple weeks ago I saw a couple of younger children crawling through the plants in Central Park, didn't think that was quite right, but they did find one. When I find one I take it home and then hide it on my next cruise, so the one I found on Wonder will be on Harmony in May.
