Scooters on elevators

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any tips on getting on the elevators riding a scooter?  In the past it's always been a nightmare trying to get on with people pushing in front of you or just flat out not wanting to move over to make room.  At times I would just give up and go back to the room.  I would never ask someone to get off to make room but would like to ride the elevators without waiting 30 minutes on one to have room.  Heck, I would take the freight elevator if they would let me!

When we see someone with a scooter we hold the elevator for them and block anyone else from getting on until they are on.

Had to do that on our last cruise as there was a couple there waiting as 2 groups just piled in and ignored the person in the scooter.

Even had to give them a push as the wheels got stuck at the door.

There are people out there that don't know how good it is to be able to walk and breath without any issues.

It is not that hard to be nice and considerate and it does not cost anything, besides we are all on vacation. Lets all get along people!!

I'm the same way.  I have no problems with politely asking people to wait for "mobility-challenged" people to get on and off things.  Once I bring it to everyone's attention, most of the crowd gets it.  The ones who don't are in the minority and outnumbered

If you're the one trying to enter/exit, try being politely, but insistently vocal.  I find most people are clueless to their inconsiderate behaviors.  Strike up a conversation with some of the people while waiting.  Ask them if you can get on first so you don't block the door or something.

I once stopped a crush of people from getting on a Green Line train in Boston after a Red Sox game because an older couple with canes was being trampled.  The wife was on her knees trying to get up and the husband was being pushed into the side of the entry.   I wasn't so polite that time.  My wife's boss still talks about it, and the incident was well over 20 years ago.

Maybe the freight elevator would be a possibility.  I can't recall ever seeing the freight elevators except on the lower decks.  I'm not saying you should have to take the freight elevator but maybe it would be allowed.

Thanks for shedding some light on this issue.  Maybe one elevator on each end of the ship could be designated as a handicap elevator.  People could still use it but at least people may realize who had priority.

I have considered using a scooter on a cruise because my mobility is challenged.  I do have a walker that I plan to use on my next cruise. I never thought about this particular issue with a scooter so thanks for your insight.  Maybe Royal has never considered this problem and maybe they could do something if it was brought to their attention.  No answer ... it isn't like you can use the stairs when the elevators get crowded.

I would be more than happy to use the freight elevator if #1 I knew where it was at and what floors it went to, and #2, my guess RCCL would never allow a guest to use them.

I understand your situation.

I have been allowed to ride freight elevators to facilitate reaching a cruise line shore excursion, so I can confirm they exist and go to every deck.  Even decks that are off limits to passengers.

Alas, the cruise line will only allow access if you are escorted by a crew member, so it probably doesn't help much.
