When You Are Not Engaged In ........

Recommended Posts

any activities (eating, being entertained, what ever) what is your favorite thing to do to pass the time while cruising?

Mine, I love to people watch, I love to sit in the Promenade, on the sun deck, in a bar that has a view of passerby's,  anyplace people congregate.  I laugh, I cry, and I sympathize.  What's not fun is when I look at someone looking at me and laughing LOL.

Hubby loves to watch people make horses patooties of themselves on the pool deck.  Bores me to tears.  I usually plop my butt in a lounger & read.  I have to say though, I have trouble going to activities.  I don’t know why.  I love trivia and am a fountain of useless knowledge so you want me on your team!  But I can’t seem to get up the nerve to go alone.  I imagine myself being that solo player at the back table by myself (although I’d still win!!!).  I used to be social and don’t know what happened.🤷‍♀️☹️

Few things:

Schooner Bar for trivia.  Being in the casino and people whooping it up at a slot machine to this day still can't figure that one out!

Some of the older ships, being on the helipad watching the sun rise...

Lastly people watching especially over the December holidays, not sure how they got all that stuff aboard the ship.

I love to just sit on my balcony - it is my crazy busy life decompression time.  I especially love to watch the sun rise every morning.  There is just something about that time of the morning that makes my heart smile.  I do like to people watch too though.

+1 for this! Even at home i can be found sitting outside at 4am enjoying the peace and quiet.

My family loves playing games so we always bring chess as well as a few board/card games. We can usually find a quiet place such as Schooner Bar (when there isn’t trivia going on) or Viking Crown and will sit there for hours playing. We also spend a lot of time on our balcony if the sun isn’t shining down on it too strongly.

Covid happened -- I was never extremely outgoing, although I do like to hang around people in small groups, but during Covid, home became my sanctuary, since I work in a hospital and so was around Covid all the time -- DH, on the other hand, had to work from home, take care of adult disabled DD who couldn't go to her day program, and couldn't go to the gym for several months.  As soon as I got home, if the weather was okay, he'd go out for an hour for a walk around the neighborhood.

I do like trivia, though, so will make the effort. Otherwise, I'm a relax by the pool or balcony with a book type of person

We were on a cruise in 2012 with a Goth group.  Oh my!  I saw more black clothing, body piercings and tattoos in that 1 week than my whole lifetime prior.  Formal night, many of the men cross dressed and watching them go to dinner was akin to a local Pride parade.  Great bunch of people and they looked like they really enjoyed themselves. Their group cruise fare included a drink package which was not yet available for the rest of us.

Yep, I also love to be on the lookout for Flying Fish.  Another favorite pastime, is taking pictures of sunrises and sunsets.  I have far too many of them.

We almost always travel with my old Army buddy and his wife.  We always bring Dominos to play during the down times.  It seem that every time we sit down to play dominos, we think of something else to do.  So, we stopped bring them.

I'm a very outgoing type of person.  I like to think of myself as a "Social Butterfly".  However, most people tend to shy away because I have a very serious look and I guess I look imposing.  So, it's hard for me to strike up a conversation with far too may people.  Even the comedian on Ovation last cruise said that I look physically imposing.  It's nothing I'm trying to do.  It is what it is and I'm not complaining.  I promise, I've never bitten anyone or ripped their lips off.  Well, not off duty anyway.  I'm a very humorous self deprivation kinda guy.  So, I just hang with my wife and friends and do the best at being social as I can.  I find being social on a cruise ship a lot easier than in other social settings.  So, if you see me on a cruise, don't be shy if I make a humorous comment to you, I'm not trying to rip your arms off.  I think that far too many of us could use some "social readjustment" these days.  Go on a cruise and let loose, get uninhibited, let your hair down, be counterintuitive, most of all, be yourself.

Funny cuz, as well as being a fountain of useless knowledge, I happen to be a terrific singer.  Sang Dust in the Wind in the Schooner Bar with the classical guitarist on Harmony.  But kinda too old for the karaoke crowd I saw.

Hey, Al Jolson never goes out of style.   Just do it!

Trivia, game shows, trivia, bingo, trivia, people watching, and trivia.

Anyone on Adventure 1/9/23, I'll happily join your trivia team!  Another fountain of useless knowledge here.

This will be my first time with my kids, so I'm sure our activities will be vastly different this time!

It is weird how I never think to bring board games. I have either physical books or something on my Kindle. I spend lots of time saving books for my cruises and I can usually get through 5+. I met up with some people on my last 2 cruises and joined their trivia teams, I have lots of knowledge (I won't call it useless) except when it comes to Friends. I don't get that show.

@Suite Snob You look no-nonsense, which describes my personality but not my face. I have resting-nice-face, it looks sweet and friendly, even when I don't want to. I look young too, so lots of people will strike up a conversation with me. I feel like the older you get the less people want to bother you, maybe that's why people shy away.

LOL.  That's exactly, well at least one reason, I post so much in here.  Like I told @Poochonce, I have a lot to say.  But, the older you get, the more the younger crowd just don't listen, move away or just down right ignore you.  So, in here, I get to say what I want to say, about cruising and really don't care if anybody reads a word or not.  I get thing off my chest.  I love to debate but I believe that I can disagree with folks without being disagreeable.

I'd prefer, however, to string along humorous posts than have a serious debate about ANYTHING.  But, I'll not avoid a serious conversation if I think I can contribute with serious responses or with humorous ones.  Just because I may debate seriously with someone, doesn't mean I dislike the person.  Hell, I don't really know anybody that post in here.  I've learned over they years that some of the people that I've had knock down, drag out argument with on a motorcycle forum I used to be in, the more we got along when we finally met up at motorcycle gathering around the country and we weren't so different, philosophically, that is.
