Dress code

The MDR these days I find really poor in regards to dress code. It is full of people who have made zero effort with odd tables of people who have made some real effort. Dinner was always a get dressed up for event, I am not saying you should be wearing suits every night, tank tops and sportswear for me is unacceptable and an area RC should tighten up on. Speciality restaurants people tend to dress up more as they have been paid for, maybe this is why!

IMHO, what needs to stop is worrying about what someone else is wearing.   The guy in board shorts 2 tables away has ZERO impact on my dining experience.  Don’t like what another diner is wearing? Don’t look at them!  Concentrate on your group and your food.  BTW I am a card carrying member of Judgers Anonymous and this is part of my 12 step program 😁

Absolute nonsense. I’m on vacation, I’ll wear what I wish. I’d never, ever, feel it was appropriate to tell somebody else how they should dress, and if you don’t like me wearing a tshirt & shorts then that says more about you than it does me

Royal does not have a strict dress code that is actively enforced except in extreme situations such as wearing a bathing suit, tank top or similar attire into a restaurant.

Royal does offer suggestions for attire but they are not mandatory.  The limit of acceptable is summarized as follows:

Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues

  • Bare feet are not allowed at any time in any venue and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner.

Casino Dress Code

  • Shirt and shoes are always required. Cover-ups should be worn over bathing attire.

Totally agree with you on this one, Pooch!  Should some people dress a little better...yes, but will it change how good the food tastes, or how good your server is?  Nope, so just go in there how you choose to dress and enjoy the experience that you have by not basing it on someone's attire.  Where can I get one of those cards, Pooch??

So jeans are allowed in the MDR?  Traveling to Alaska in two months and i'm really  struggling with the attire since it will be chilly.  Usually I wear nice sundresses to dinner.

Yes, jeans are very acceptable in the MDR!

On a non-formal night in the MDR, I'll wear khaki shorts, a nice polo, and boat shoes. Nobody has spontaneously combusted due to me wearing shorts and I'm certain that will be the case in the future.

On my last cruise on Odyssey I even saw people in... sweatshirts (gasp! 😁).

In all seriousness, it's your vacation and wear what you feel comfortable as long as it's not a swimsuit, tank top, etc. which is against the rules posted earlier.

How formal is formal night on an Alaskan cruise? Do men have to wear a sport coat? I figured slacks and a nice shirt should be acceptable.

Since packing for colder weather and layering, bringing formal wear seems alittle out of place for an Alaska cruise.

Lol actually men cannot eat breakfast in the MDR without a shirt with sleeves!  We went for breakfast on our final morning and my husband and my son both wore very modest sleeveless tops (they were not skimpy tank shirts).  Both had to cover their arms or not eat there!  Luckily they had zip sweatshirts not packed so breakfast was served!

I like to think that most people have some level of common sense and dignity.

If you are on a cruise, you are there to relax and enjoy.  If you are fretting, or otherwise spending time to think, about what other people are wearing, you really aren't vacationing are you?  On the other hand, there is no need to show up to dinner topless right?

We dress appropriate to what our common core values and sense of decency dictate: formal night means formal and beach wear means beach wear.  However, me trying to be cool and trendy...I might wear some nice sneakers with a casual suit, or wear some nice jeans and a blazer once in awhile.

Just look away, mind your business, and don't let extraneous things affect you.

To those of you who wish to push boundaries of common decency...I won't judge you or shame you in public, but might have a chuckle at your expense back in the room with my spouse.

The more attention that one gives to an issue, the more that issue may get worse. Don't ad fuel to an ember and make a fire out of it.

Why?

Just my opinion. I know people are going to say don’t worry about what what other people are wearing. But I’m kinda old school. I’m 51, and I grew up enjoying when my parents took me out to a nice restaurant and we all dressed up. It was a special occasion. Times have changed and I have to change with them I guess.

I’m 66 and my parents took us to upscale restaurants all the time.  They even had a favorite restaurant/nightclub that allowed my brother and I entrance because they knew we were well behaved.  Doesn’t give me the right to tell people how to dress.  MDR is is exactly that -  the MAIN dining room.  That’s where they serve the complementary dinner so that’s where people go.  Don’t be naked.

I don’t remember telling anybody how to dress. I said it was my opinion. And I acknowledged that times have changed and that I needed to change with them.

I will be wearing mine for formal night... just with an Argyle Jacket and vest not a PC.

Myself also just an Argyle Jacket and vest.  I am a little heavy-set and the PC does not sit right on me.......I will still wear my fly.

Ok??  ...no fly for me. The only way I would wear a fly if it was required and then it would have to be with a PC and it would be a court event or something like that. I don't think I am that high on the radar to warrant a court invite or would even want to go.

As long as your fly is up, me thinks it is acceptable. 🤣

Conversations like this always devolve into back and forth sniping, but I will throw my two cents in for what it's worth...

I am a big believer in adhering to what is expected behavior. I used to hate following the rules, but now I've learned they are for everyone's enjoyment. I never lived through the days of dressing fancy for flights and cruises, but I kind of wish things were still that way.

However, people spend good amounts of money to go on these trips, so I think they should make the vacation their own. You should make the vacation your own. Wear what you want within reason, and just enjoy. We are all there to have a fun, relaxing time. If you are getting caught up with what other people are doing/wearing/saying/etc. YOU are NOT enjoying YOUR vacation.

So, hope for the best in humanity, but be tolerant when people don't live up to your specific standards.
