What are some things onboard the ship that just make you cringe?

I wear patriotic shirts and hats almost 100% of the time, cruising or not.  Some folks believe that that is a political statement, these days.  What a shame!  @D Alt this is not directed toward you, personally!

I don't have any problem with a patriotic shirt, such as an American flag shirt or what have you.

The problem are the political statement shirts with slogans for their political leaning.  There's no need for that, IMO.

I agree, at least on a cruise ship.  My everyday wear is a T-Shirt with a U.S. Flag of some sort and my U.S. Army Retired hat.  However, depending on the venue, the purpose of the visit to the venue and so on, I have many many shirts that support my political leanings and I proudly wear them THERE.  But, as stated, it's not appropriate on a cruise ship only because there are so many people that can't control their emotions.  I just wish others felt the same way about their political leanings while on a cruise ship.

BTW, it's not just a cruise ship, many many other inappropriate venues, like national monuments, parks, historical sites, etc etc etc.

There goes part of the extra gratuity planned for the room steward!

It's not always the steward that cleans the room. I did a B2B and there were "strangers" going in and cleaning out the linens etc.  IDK if there is a final walk through by the cabin attendant.  Usually now there is a magnet on the doors that says "this room has been cleaned and sanitized"....I had a cabin that I did not notice if the magnet was there----and it was not "set up" (no masks, sanitizer, tissues)  and it had someone's leftover plastic hangers-I never saw so many plastic hangers! LOL  Lots of new stateroom attendants nowadays.  I had a knock on my cabin door last week and the stateroom attendant was standing their with his boss.....I thought something was wrong.  They were conducting checks to determine if everything was "up to par"....and "how has service been".  I felt bad for the attendant having to be subject to that and I raved about how he was awesome (which he was). Imagine if I had something negative to say!

Back in the day when my DH was a cabin steward this was common practice on turn-around days. The stewards would actually pay other members of staff to assist them with the extra workload. It was an opportunity for some to make extra cash and alleviated what was a hugely busy day for the stewards themselves.

I know in these past months the stewards have been EXTREMELY overworked due to having to take on more cabins due to either sick co-workers or lack of employees.  Smart idea for him to have others help alleviate the workload

This occurred earlier this year. Ship was understaffed due to large covid outbreak amongst crew. All shows canceled and St Thomas call canceled due % positivity rate....I never saw so few working so hard to make things run as smoothly as possible. Our cabin attendant worked hard to fix any issues that were found. I always tip the cabin attendants extra(above pre-paid) and did so in this case as well.  Patience is the operative word wrt current post?- covid cruising climate

Original post was about cringeworthy things encountered.

noun

  1. A vessel of considerable size for deep-water navigation.
  2. A sailing vessel having three or more square-rigged masts.
  3. An aircraft or spacecraft.

This is funny - the discussion about boat vs ships.  During my boating course I took in NH, the class was asked why does the classification for boats only go up to 65 feet.  Since I have been on ships and HAVE BEEN correct for calling the ship a boat, I knew the answer.  The instructor was surprise I knew the answer since I had told him that I knew next to nothing about boating.  But I knew the difference between a boat and a ship.  LOL!

Cringeworthy:

I tried a speedo once and got advice as to not embarrass myself or wife.  Friends told me to strategically place a Potato in my speedo before I go out on deck.  I was getting looks from everyone and thought I was magnificent until my wife told me I should have put the Potato in the front.

Having just gotten up the courage, after much support from my teenaged daughters, to actually be brave enough to show my cancer scars in a bathing suit on my upcoming cruise, I'm just crossing my fingers that I don't show up as a "cringe-worthy" line item on this lovely list.

How wonderful that your daughters are so loving and encouraging!  Rock those scars.

I have a large one that looks like it’s from open heart surgery.  I actually needed to have my ribs surgically broken and reshaped but the only precaution I take is using good sunscreen.  Scars burn easier.  You go live that life you fought for.

This is true in almost any crowded activity, not just cruise ships:  People that exit, for example the theatre, and just stop there, at the exit, the whole party just to talk right in the middle of the exit/hallway, or other activity/venues.  This bothers me more than those that try to get on a packed elevator before letting ANYONE off.  Stupid, just stupid.

When people wear shorts and thongs into the MDR on formal night, like I get Royal doesn't enforce the dress code and you can wear what you like...but you could at least give it a go....and put on a nice shirt and jeans or something

My response is not intended to be argumentative, you are entitled to your own opinion and I'm sure it is heart felt.  And, I have no idea how you react to people that do dress in opposition to your feelings about it.

I worked hard all my working career to retire and do, basically, what I want, when I want, and how I want to do it.  For the most part, that has come true.  I spent more than 20 years within a society (the military) that had strict dress codes, some very formal and some just work dress codes.  Now, one of my many releases is cruising.  I look at cruising to be just the opposite of that.  The way I dress, within legal and societal moral norms, is my option open to me while cruising.  I personally do not wear shorts and collarless shirts/T-Shirts to the MDR.  But, it is an option if I want to.  I also feel that the way I dress shouldn't change the taste of any food that is served in the MDR or any other venue.

On the other hand, I am a Black and White kinda guy.  I don't see much gray!  I have found that with Royal and Brand X cruise lines (I'm sure others are the same way but I haven't cruised on them), much/many of their passenger conduct policies are just suggestions and the squeaky wheel gets the grease.  If they have a policy, enforce it, damnit!  Yes, even the ones I don't like.  If there is no intent to enforce it/them 100% or as published (some published exceptions apply, of course), don't have it/them.

People sitting at Slot Machines and not playing them!  People that take a chair from a Slot Machine to sit with their someone special!  Inconsiderate is the lightest way I can put it.  I can't use the very appropriate STRONG language that I'd like to use.

Just two short years ago I was turned away from the Suite lounge on formal night because I was in shorts and flip flops. I told the concierge wow, never been shamed on a ship before. We just returned from B2B on Allure last week and what a difference. I took a my tux and my wife her nice gowns, and what do you know, people in shorts and flip flops in the Suite Lounge and MDR. We have decided for our December cruise to only pack casual clothes for the lounge and dinner. I think we can save a whole suitcase worth of space. I am fine with dressing down if that is the norm, I look forward to no jacket or tie at dinner time.

As a person with a bad back, and cannot stand comfortably for long periods, I will sit in a slot machine and not play in order to converse with a friend. (I don't move the chairs-aside from hurting myself I don't think they should be moved)   I am mindful of people around me, and any time someone passes I will say "I am not playing, would you like the machine"....sometimes they say yes, sometimes no.  I have also asked people who are not playing If I can play the machine they are sitting at.  (I've never had anyone say no, and honestly it's not often I will ask).  Now I suppose I could stick my card in the machine, throw in $5 and when someone asks me if I am playing I can answer yes and push the button....

Your second paragraph sort of negates your last one. If you do what you want, why can't people, who sit next to others playing slots, do what they want? I have sat at machines and played then stop and chatted with others. If someone wants to use that machine, they have a mouth to ask, otherwise that isn't a big deal. People aren't mind readers, unless someone says, "I want to play that," they aren't wrong for sitting there.  If someone used strong language with me because of a seat, they would get that same language back and I won't move.

There is nothing in my second paragraph that negates my last.  Nothing in my second paragraph has anything to do with depriving anybody of anything as intended.  While my last paragraph is talking about people that are depriving someone else of using something that they are entitled to using without having to go through the uncomfortable and possibly confrontational (and with todays society, it's very likely) process of asking someone if they would move or return the chair.  Sorry if you can't see that!  I personally don't have a problem asking people if they are using the machine or if I can have the chair to play at the intended machine.  I've also received some wise guy responses, too.  So, don't try to make it sound benign, it isn't in many cases and it isn't reasonable to put some people through it.

Yes, I've had money in a machine and a person next to me asked a question or made a comment and I've stopped to talk to them for a few minutes.  But, I don't sit at the machine, with no money in it and sit there for an extended period of time.  And I think you know exactly what I'm talking about here.

Cruising should be a hassle free environment, not asking people to do what is common decency, period.

It doesn't read the way you intend. Yor second paragraph say "you do what you want when you want, etc. "Then you say you want to give choice words to someone sitting at a machine and not using it. That means others aren't offered the same curtesy as you in their autonomy.  I stated that nobody is a mind reader, they don't know if you want to use that machine and you don't know if they played and stopped. That isn't entitlement, saying people don't have the right to sit at machines is entitlement. You are implying that if you aren't gambling, at all times, don't come to the casino.

I guess we have very different definitions of common decency because I fail to see how just taking up space is wrong. I will agree that it is a shame at how you can't ask someone to use something they aren't, without it turning negative. As far as hassle free........cruising is just like all things in life, your hassle/hindrance will depend on a lot of factors and not guaranteed.

Yor second paragraph say "you do what you want when you want, etc. Ya, as long as I'm not stopping someone else for enjoying what they want to do as far as what that something is intended for AND again, I think you know what I'm talking about here.  "Then you say you want to give choice words to someone sitting at a machine and not using it Yep, I sure do. That means others aren't offered the same curtesy as you in their autonomy Nope!.  I stated that nobody is a mind reader, they don't know if you want to use that machine and you don't know if they played and stopped It doesn't take a mind reader to know and understand that that seat is there for the purpose of revenue, for the purpose of a person to sit there and put money in that revenue producing machine.. That isn't entitlement, saying people don't have the right to sit at machines is entitlement I really don't think that you believe that.  But you may. You are implying that if you aren't gambling, at all times, don't come to the casino B.S..

I guess we have very different definitions of common decency because I fail to see how just taking up space is wrong Taking up space not doing what it was intended for, not playing the machine, not allowing someone else the ability to sit at the machine without, possibly, having a sticky situation. I will agree that it is a shame at how you can't ask someone to use something they aren't, without it turning negative. As far as hassle free........cruising is just like all things in life, your hassle/hindrance will depend on a lot of factors and not guaranteed.

I'm done with this, it's obvious that I have hit a nerve.  So, I'll not contribute to anymore escalation of this discussion.  Something like asking someone if you can sit at a Slot Machine that ISN'T using it for it's intended use.
