San Juan Hotel Transportation to Port

Hi everyone, my wife & I will be cruising on the Jewel in a few months out of Puerto Rico.  It will be our first cruise in 7 years.  So, we are getting really excited!!

We will be flying in a day early and staying at the Sheraton Puerto Rick Hotel & Casino (by the convention center in San Juan) the night before the cruise.  We have transportation lined up from the airport to the hotel (day before embarking) & from the port to the airport (disembarking day).  However, the hotel is really close to the Pan Am port.  Any advice on getting from the hotel to the port?  Our default will be a cab, but walking might be easier.

Thanks!

Brian

I stayed at that same hotel last year for a Jewel of the Seas cruise.  I could see Adventure of the Seas so clearly on the pool deck the day before and it seemed really tempting to walk.  It is farther than it looks (especially with luggage).  You'd have to walk several blocks towards the marina, then nearly the entire distance of the runway on that little airport to get to the Royal Caribbean terminal.  Probably close to a mile of total walking.  Save your energy for the stairs on the ship and take a cab...

Maybe it's not my business, and maybe that hotel is nice.  I've heard it called the "Nothing to Do Sheraton".  The Sheraton Old San Juan is exactly what it is called.  A 500 year old city with walls, forts, churches, and restaurants right out side the door.  It's a cool experience.  Just sayin'.

Personally, I think flying to Puerto Rico and not saying in Old San Juan is like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower...

Last time we were in SJ the Sheraton OSJ had a two night minimum stay and we only needed one night.  We had four of us and I found Ciqala Suites, not to far away from the convention center.  We had a full blown apartment.  2 bedrooms, kitchen, 2 baths, washer/dryer all for less than the price of two regular rooms.  Heck, less than some of the rooms on the beach.  We took a taxi to OSJ, saw the sites, then taxi'd back.

I agree with this assessment that there is not much of anything to do in this area.  Location-wise, it doesn't hold a candle to the Old San Juan location.  However, it is only a short cab ride away from that area (you can see the other Sheraton from the hotel), so shouldn't dissuade you terribly.

If you are looking to relax and lounge on property, the pool area is MUCH nicer than the Old San Juan property (I've done both).  "Convention Center Sheraton" has a giant pool deck with tons of chairs, infinity pool, hot tubs, restaurant/bar.  Old San Juan, has a very small rooftop pool, with almost no room to sit/lounge/sunbathe.

It's not hard to get to OSJ and only costs 75 cents if you take the bus. Plus, you you also want a day to enjoy the beach, other locations have that to offer.

Hi everyone, thanks for the hotel input.  We've been to OSJ many times before (including a prior cruise and part of our honeymoon).  We are looking more to relax at the hotel prior to the cruise.  We'll be taking a redeye from the PacNW and want to chill by the pool for a day prior to embarking.

Cheers!
